I use one if I remember to bring it with me. I must have balance issues because I tend to fall a lot. One of those walking poles saved me from doing a header into a huge rock near a creek one time. Bent the pole all to heck but helped me swing around so I hit my side instead of my head. If my DH sees me going out for a walk through the woods then he will remind me to take a pole. "One of those saved your life one time...you need it." 😂😍

I use walking poles when hiking for many of the reasons listed, uneven terrain etc. I also had an issue with over stressing my hip and was told walking poles would help with not stressing my hip so much. I like ours and they can collapse easily to store and carry as needed.

So the universe must be listening. I was flipping channels last night and ran across a movie "Infinite Storm". I think that was the name. With Naomi Watts. She was a hiker/climber doing some major hike in the winter, it seemed, alone. She was using 2 hiking poles to help her along the loose rocky parts. It became too much like the movie "Land" with Robin Wright. A lot of aloneness and maybe some not quite right choices so I turned the channel.

Yes, I use hiking sticks when hiking. The main reason is because my hands tend to swell when walking and holding the hiking sticks keeps them more elevated and helps with the swelling. But also, I'm clumsy. And they're useful for moving brush out of the way on the less-traveled trails. Mine are really lightweight and collapsible, so I can always stick them in my backpack if I get tired of them. I forget about this--to help with hand swelling. We did a hike that was level and supposed to be short (we were on the wrong trail so we hiked 1.5 miles instead of .25 miles) so I didn't use my poles and my hands were swelling by the end.

Mine are named Tuck and Roll! I trip a lot on rough terrain and they are super helpful when going up and down inclines but my hands not swelling is a major perk of using them. Mine fold up and I keep them stored in my backpack.

I use walking poles. I live in the Lake District in the UK, there are many many rocky uneven walks around me. I wouldn’t feel safe without at least one pole. They have straps on the handles so you can put your hands through them if you need to use them for something else.
