We don't have cats now. When we did, there was one that didn't seem interested in getting on the counter or table. The other one was up there all the time now matter what we did. He wasn't phased by us chasing him off. He'd be back the next day. I was constantly disinfecting those surfaces.

One of my cats thinks he is the centerpiece for the table at every meal. 😳🙄🤣 haha!! that reminds me- the other night, as my DH was fixing his plate in the kitchen, one of the cats hopped up onto his placemat on the coffee table, curled up, and settled down. I *should* have told her to get off, I know, but it was just so funny, I wanted to see his face when he walked over. It's like she was just waiting for him (and his dinner plate) to come over, lol!

Since moving to Pittsburgh, we have had fairly limited counter space so the cats getting on them has not been a problem.
When I was in Southern CA with a house, it definitely happened sometimes.

We have 3. Two of them almost never ever get on the counter - maybe once a month if that. But the third one was a street cat who spent her first year scavenging. She's gotten much better, but the scavenging instinct remains. She loves to watch me cook, but I've been able to train her to sit up on what would be used by other people as a bar and just to watch me cook on the lower counter. I grin and bear it and keep lots of Clorox wipes on hand.

All the time. We’re realistic. We all work and I’m sure they do what they want while we’re gone.
We assume they’ve been up there and wash before we cook.

I currently have 8 cats and 4 of them will jump on the counter. One is persistent. I could put her on the ground 50 times and if we are close by, she will jump straight back up. Three of the others have no interest and it's too high for the other.

Yes only when we are feeding our dogs and they try to get the wet food. I don’t like it all. Mine get on our table and that’s what I really don’t like but haven’t figured out how to stop it.

We have two cats. One (thinks he) is sneaky and will go up there after we head to bed. The other uses it as a way to torment us when it’s getting close to their feeding time. Squirt bottle, chasing her, a firm “NO” and putting her down… none of that works. Her goal is to get us out into the kitchen to get her food. I ignore, so that she doesn’t get the desired effect, but my husband just cannot tolerate it and feeds right into the behavior. After 8 years, neither one of them (cat or DH) will change LOL. We just clean the counters before any food preparation.

Ok I’ll speak up for all the yes people… I picked sometimes since there wasn’t a yes lol. Before I met my husband it was hell no, which is now I grew up and then trained my own cats. Well I’ve given up that fight long long ago because I never use the counter without cleaning it first anyway so I’m not ashamed to say yes 🤷🏽♀️😁 I figure dish soap and water cleans whatever would be on my island, heck these cats sleep in bed under the covers 😬 and I’m certain where I prep/eat is clean. They are not allowed up if there’s food being prepped eaten etc (so I do draw the line somewhere 😊) ETA: Well I see, now that I’ve read the thread, that I’m not alone in the counter cat battle. Lol. There are more yes people than I expected to see.

I'll go one further and say I LIKE them up there, they're easier to kiss and hug at nearly face level 🤣🤣 I only make them get down when I'm cleaning for food prep, cooking, or eating. Same with the tables.

ModChick, that photo is so great! I stand corrected in my belief that cats getting on counters is only a thing that people who don’t have cats think happens.

We've had 9 cats. Right now we have my 3 year old sweet Levon, and DD has her 5 month old kitten. Her kitten is the most wild kitty to date. He has just learned how to jump up on everything!! He even jumps on an accent table where I have DH's urn. Freaks me out every time..... I caught him jumping up on the stove while I was cooking the other day! He has no clue about things being hot or dangerous. I've NEVER seen anything like it with our other cats. He might finally be the one that I have to get a high-power water gun for. That, or we'd need an enclosed playpen for him. Not sure!!
I did have one incredible cat, Felix (another black kitty) and he'd sit ON a seat at the dinner table when I'd be cooking. He sat nicely and waited and just wanted to join us all at the table. DH used to give him a tiny dish when we'd cook things he liked and he'd gently eat them. He was the most agile, graceful cat we've had. He could swiftly climb up to the highest point in a room, but all he wanted was to sit up high, look around and sleep up there. He NEVER did anything dangerous and he never walked in my kitchen. He DID used to sit atop the toilet and watch DH and I brush our teeth or get ready for bed. He liked watching us doing "human" things, just to watch and learn.

Our big cat sounds like a toddler jumping from the counter to the floor. Honestly, I think our cats get on the counters to see outside. Three of the four walls in our great room/kitchen are windows and the birds outside are a definite draw. They are not motivated by people food, at all. I really think it is just to get a better view!

I answered sometimes. We have 2 different counters, and one is where they are fed because we have a boxer (<~~~) who loves cat food But they do not go on the other counter, if they do they get down as soon as they hear us coming, they know better, and we also don't leave any food out at all.

One of my cats likes to be carried around, and he gets heavy so I'll set him on the counter and give him smoochies to give my arms a rest.

I have one cat that has never climbed any higher than the bed/couch. He even always sits on the bottom shelf of the cat tree. He is a weird cat. So he definitely doesn't get on the counters. My other cat is a climber but for some reason she isn't interested in the counters all that much. I think I've only seen her on them twice in 13 years. Both of my sister's cats love the counters. One of them is obsessed with knocking things off. He is adorable but a very bad kitty.
