A friend of mine loaned me hers, she has about 15-ish colors. I watched JM’s “basic/easy” alcohol inks video, and then a couple others but now I couldn’t tell you who they were. Anyhow, I made 8 quarter sheets today. Of those, I have 3 (maybe 4 - it’s still drying) that I like quite a bit, and the other pieces there are parts of that I’ll use for smaller things.
Anyhow, if you play with them, do you have a favorite technique and/or favorite videos? Any tips or tricks that you thought as a newbie would have been helpful for you to know? Favorite colors? Any favorite metallics (I’d like to go pick up a silver and a gold)? Have you found any differences between the various brands of yupo paper (other than thickness)? Feel like sharing any examples?
Thanks a bunch!

Ardyth has some very beginner friendly videos where she tries them out. www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ardyth+percy+robb+alcohol+inksJessica Frost Ballas is another person who has some videos - I found this one for SCT www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeVJPcss1q0 and this playlist on her channel www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2xTnMhtsRW4SG6ueGPZXY6wFP94rtl8MI also found Tiffany Solario's playlilst while I was searching for Ardyth's videos www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOlKLBQyFx-DD7YtbLsfdDtM2jfEzxKk7I tried them out many years ago (2012?) and decided they weren't really for me. I've resisted getting any since getting back into cardmaking. I like the look but not the texture. I'm trying to avoid techniques that are actually playing with plastic rather than paper craft (foil acetate etc). I did some stained glass types of techniques on acetate back in the day. I've also done oxide inks on photo paper, which acts a lot like the Yupo (and someone gave me a bunch of glossy photo paper I didn't need). I never really figured out what to do with the backgrounds I made because I resisted cutting them down and layering things over the top, or I didn't know what would look good with them, especially with the coated texture.

I have recently started using alcohol inks. I really like them! I had owned some for years - at least a decade - but never used them until I saw a card I liked this past summer. I bought some newer more vibrant colours and have really been enjoying them. The card I liked is the second one down, by Caly Person (scroll slightly down to where the card samples begin): www.simonsaysstampblog.com/blog/limited-edition-card-kit-you-mean-the-world-to-me/Anyway, I had trouble recreating the background so I ended up just playing with the inks and making up my own. I definitely have a lot to learn to make it look pretty. I made this card last week for my brother. The background is alcohol ink (I can't figure out how to embed a photo so I've put a link to it instead, hopefully it works, it's an owl): www.flickr.com/photos/140078921@N08/52393268417/in/dateposted-public/I recently saw a technique I liked on Ellen Hutson's blog, I plan to try this soon, it's very soft and pretty: blog.ellenhutson.com/2022/09/19/alcohol-ink-marbled-tags-with-essentials-by-ellen/Edited to add: So far I've only tried Yupo paper and like it. I bought some other, cheaper, papers to try, too, so I'll let you know once I've had a chance to play with them.

Ranger’s (also called Adirondack) alcohol inks are my faves; they move differently than Marabu’s and I ditched the Marabu. Yupo is the brand name of a plastic paper, so if it’s called that it should be from the same manufacturer. I have (had?) another plastic paper from Joggles that didn’t work as well for the looks I like but is substantially cheaper. I usually like white but translucent is fine. Blending solution works better for me than alcohol. Warning: The ink fumes aren’t healthy, so I bought a small fan that sits to my side and blows fumes away. For the same reason using a drinking straw to move alcohol inks isn’t a great idea. Tim Holtz said he lectured JM about using a straw but that JM turns her head away to exhale. I got a little puffer tool that photographers use (I think?) and now Ranger sells one. A fave technique is to wait a bit for the ink to be fairly but not completely dry and press foil onto it to get little bits and lines of metallic. The first person I saw do that might have been Kristina Werner, who also links to/mentions others doing the technique. It took me a bit to find the sweet spot of just dry enough but not too dry. Found the video: youtu.be/TmA6gaCRgyEThere are two metallics: Mixatives and Alloys, and they react differently. Sorry no photos; they’re only on my iPad and the couple times I tried it didn’t work. No great loss; my photos are crappy, just records for me. ETA marg I just looked at the super card you made for your brother. The color choices and background against the bird are stunning—even how the sort of triangle in his neck relates to the yellow triangle in the background!

I love playing with alcohol inks, especially when I'm in a crafty funk. I can waste an afternoon just messing around.
Some of my favorites have already been listed, but also Sandy Allnock has a lot of great video. In her YT or channel or blog just type alcohol inks. A bunch of videos pop up. She also did a video comparing different brands and blending solutions vs alcohol.

It's so much more vibrant than using the metallic alcohol inks. Thanks for posting it! marg, your owl is amazing!! I love playing with alcohol inks. So much that I finally bought an electric little air wand thing (I can't think of what it's called) but it helps move the ink around better for me. I get better wisping with it. I'm with Cardboxer, Ranger inks are the best. So vibrant. I love their Yupo paper too. Although I haven't tried any other brands. MichyM, I'd say you are 1000% in on card making now! I love it! And, your cards are stunning!!

peasquared , I think Ranger’s Yupo is Yupo by the original manufacturer that’s branded for Ranger. I used to buy Yupo from whoever had good prices and also from Ranger once to compare. I stocked up a long time ago when Blick had a good sale and I can’t remember the other shops. It’s easy to cut so larger sizes work. yupousa.com/our-company/I love the foil too, and it’s always a surprise! Have you tried Alloys and if so did you like them? Alloys are more metallic than his Mixatives and sit on top. Short video that shows the difference, for anyone who hasn’t used them: youtu.be/7OD0Jf9WZ_4ETA I just rewatched part of an old Tim Holtz video and he stated that Ranger’s Yupo paper is the original by the Yupo corporation, just made into handy sizes. Yupo is trademarked so if it says Yupo it should be the original.

BTW, while I mostly like Alloys the best - more like foil - the white Mixative is neat for softening colors. But it’s personal taste, Mixatives are neat too. ETA The Tim Holtz video on the website below explains the difference between alcohol Mixatives vs. Alloys and later warns about straw use. What did your brother think?!? Thank you, and everyone else for all this info. I have to come back to this thread later next week after the Crop and Create craziness has subsided a bit. Silly of me to ask about this the night before it started.

I feel like I have so much less control when using it over using a straw though.
