DNF'd: The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. I enjoyed The Guest List but the dialogue was so overwrought that I gave up on it very early. The Long Weekend by Gilly Macmillan. It might be very good but I was reading it on the heels of 2 other thrillers and I realized 2 chapters in that I just wasn't in the mood. I just got a ton of books from the library that became available at the same time, so I'm reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, Island Time by Georgia Clark, Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen, Finding Me by Viola Davis and It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey. I definitely won't have time to read them all by the time they have to go back, so not sure what gets picked and what gets (temporarily) turfed. I think Finding Me is non-negotiable but after that I'm not sure. Anyone read these and have suggestions of something I should prioritize or give a miss? I LOVED Lessons in Chemistry. Not my usual type of book, but after lots of good reviews on here ( Rhondito, SabrinaP pjaye finaledition SockMonkey ) I read and gave it 5 stars. pjaye also mentioned in her review that this book is being made into a mini series. Please give The Long Weekend by Ginny Macmillan another chance. I loved this one too and gave it 5 stars. Good luck picking your next read !

How did I not know The Winners was out??? I had been stalking it and mixed up the international release and the US release. It just came out in the US last week. I think I was the first in our library to check it out. It is good to have friends in the right places. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I need more time to sit and read it. I am so tired at the end of the day I fall asleep too quickly.

I put Lessons in Chemistry on my want to read list and why Christmas wish list. DH and DS liked that I gave them a variety of books to choose from because I did not know what I was getting, but they knew I would like it.

I’m currently reading The Winners by Fredrik Backman too. As soon as I heard about the book, I went and requested my library purchase it which meant I was one of the first in line. I may have requested it from more than one library!
So far the book is just as good as the other two. I love the storyline.

I just realized I have read this thread but did not post. I finished This Place of Wonder. Augustus, the family patriarch, has died. This is a solid family drama told from four perspectives of women who loved him: his business partner and the love of his life, his former lover, his daughter, and his stepdaughter. Character-driven. 4/5 stars. I'm now reading Little Sister. It's interesting but has serious TWs. I'm first on my library list for The Winners, but it has not come in yet. <Le sigh.> Lisa Who wrote Little Sister?

I am reading The Winners by Fredrik Backman, I was first on the reserve list at a library where my son lives. I loved the first two, so anticipate enjoying this one, too. I did do a little reading online about the plot and characters in the first two books so that I'm better able to remember them. I finished "The Babysitter" by Joyce Carol Oates - I love her style of writing, so almost don't care about the storyline, this was a bit strange, but still enjoyed it. Also finished "All Your Perfects" by Colleen Hoover, which I picked up because I enjoyed a couple of her recent books, but this was a romance, which her earlier books seem to be, is not really my genre, so although I didn't hate it, I didn't really enjoy it. I lost my Kindle when my siblings and spouses were here for a few days, and it's been two weeks since they left, and it has not appeared - it is absolutely LOST. I feel like a fish out of water without it, it almost gives me anxiety! I ordered a new one today. If anyone needs a new Kindle, there is a fabulous sale for about another eight days, I believe it is. So frustrating. You'll find it one day in a drawer somewhere. Don't ask me how I know! So is a Kindle much better than reading a book on your iPad? I see others have offered ideas about this, and I concur. For me, I love the portability of a Kindle - you can slip it in your purse, it is lightweight, and you can pull it out to read at any time. I also love that you are never without a number of books. We were gone this weekend, and I was Kindle-less, having lost mine, and I spent more time deciding what books to take with me than I did packing because I had a lot of driving time to read, and just hate wondering if I have enough to read on a trip! We are retired, so take trips, and it's such a benefit to have a bunch of books on one little device. I also love the Paperwhite technology, you can read at night without a light, not disturbing your spouse/partner. I got my new Kindle today - yay! This is my third one - I've had them since the early days of Kindle, and they just WORK - rarely an issue.

It's actually part of a series, but it reads just fine as a stand alone.

![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png) This phrase comes from a sexist, racist movie quote, just in case you didn't know. I know many don't realize it. I'm sure you didn't, so you know, moving forward! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) My book probably doesn't fit in; I'm reading Fire and Fury by Michael Wolff. I'm just about done, and it's just ok. Gossip, really; although I tend to believe it is very close to the truth. Entertaining, I'm almost done. Next on my list is, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Housseini.

I've read a bunch since I last posted, but right now I'm finishing listening to Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn. It's very good, but sad. I'm glad I'm listening because the readers are Hawaiian so accents are authentic, which is important because this story is about Hawaiian identity in a lot of ways. I just finished Serpent & Dove and Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin. I really was into the first book, but found myself skimming lots of the 2nd, unfortunately. I'll definitely read the third because I do like the characters. I was looking for witchy fall fiction. The first book is great - witchy, interesting, a little spicy/sexy. The 2nd goes WAY into the worldbuilding and maybe...too far? Now I'm reading Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz and so far I really like it. A young woman in early 1800s Scotland wants to become a surgeon, but must marry for money or be at the mercy of relatives. Problem? She needs bodies to practice on, and meets a "resurrection man" who scavenges graves for corpses for medical students. Dark, but so far it's good!

I am also listening to The Winners. It's a long one - 21 hours! I'm only 2 hours in but enjoying it so far. I'm also slogging through the 21 hours. I'm close to tossing it out the window. Why do I listen to this? I know lots of people enjoy Backman's writing but it's dribbling nonsense to me. I swear I'm going to drink a sip of wine for every time I hear "stupid" or "idiot". I could finish the bottle in an evening alone. I barely got through "Anxious People". Again, an overuse of "stupid" and "idiot". I made it through Beartown. I suffered through "Us Against You" with more "stupid" and "idiot". Now I want to see what happens to the characters. After this, no more Backman for me.

I really liked his other books and was so excited for this release, but I am struggling. I finally realized it is like a BuzzFeed story. He tells part of the story, and then some hint to what is coming up. I am only at page 170, but I am already thinking this book would only be 350 pages if he just told the story. I know this is his style, but this book seems like he cranked it up to overdrive. I had the entire weekend to read and I just found it hard to get into. I want to know what happens, but this one is going to be tough. I already find myself skimming parts of it. UGH, I feel bad just saying this.

I finished The Marriage Portrait Maggie O'Farrell - a "novel set in Renaissance Italy, and centering on the captivating young duchess Lucrezia de Medici" This was a solid read for me. It had an interesting story, a very likeable main character, and I love the time period. 4 stars. This author also wrote Hamnet, which I haven't read, but may add to my list. Any opinions on that book? Thank you! I just read the first half of the free content on Amazon ... I'm loving the writing. Sounds like an interesting story too.
