David Depape, the man who attacked Paul Pelosi, a man illegally in this country, has been camping full time on the street in a dilapidated school bus complete with a gay pride flag out front, a sign that reads "Berkley stands against hate," and a BLM banner behind. He's well known in the Bay Area for taking hallucinogenic drugs, and for being a nudist. Depape's family, which includes his ex-girlfriend and her family, and his old neighbors describe him as someone who is drug addicted and mentally ill. The ex-girlfriend said he thought he was Jesus for a year and was never able to hold a job, "... a broken child in an adult body with serious mental problems." Somehow, that no one is yet reporting, this mentally ill, basically homeless man who is here in this country illegally managed to avoid all of the special security that Nancy Pelosi has at all of her homes and be in the home where he hit Paul Pelosi in front of police responding to a wellness check. The man apparently made remarks on social media that shows he doesn't think that we had a free and fair election in 2020, plus other comments, and thereby despite everything else pointing to the contrary, this man is clearly a fine example of a right wing extremist who is terrorizing anyone on the political left. Y'all might think the narrative the media was so fast to jump on makes sense, but it's just one more thing that doesn't add up. From all accounts this man is drug-addicted, mentally ill, unable to hold down a job and living on the streets. Those should be the most primary and obvious considerations. And where was this reported? None of the sources I've looked at mentioned anything about being here illegally. There are rumors that he was itinerant, moving around, perhaps staying in a bus and having a PO Box. There are reports that he moved here 20 years ago from Canada. He could have obtained legal citizenship, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he is here illegally. None of that however has anything to do with his politics which have clearly been far right for the last 8 years. Not to mention Republican responsibility for demonizing Nancy Pelosi for the last 12 years or longer. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/29/paul-pelosi-attack-david-depape/www.npr.org/2022/10/31/1132944661/pelosi-david-depape-charges-assault-attempted-kidnappingwww.nytimes.com/2022/10/31/us/pelosi-home-attack-suspect-charged.htmlwww.nytimes.com/2022/10/30/us/suspect-attack-nancy-pelosi-husband.htmlwww.politico.com/news/2022/10/31/the-five-most-chilling-details-about-the-paul-pelosi-attack-00064323However, conservatives are sharing lots of conspiracy theories www.nytimes.com/2022/10/31/technology/pelosi-attack-misinformation-conspiracy-republicans.htmlThe assailant, identified by the police as David DePape, 42, posted a series of notes in the days before the attack suggesting that he had fallen under the sway of right-wing conspiracy theories and antisemitism online. Some of the flurry of posts by others questioning the circumstances of the attack appeared intended to deflect attention from Mr. DePape’s views.
The disinformation “isn’t just political,” said Angelo Carusone, the president and chief executive of Media Matters for America, a progressive nonprofit. “It’s much bigger than that; it’s deeper. They’re really rethinking and reshaping a lot of our norms.”
At the core of the flurry of disinformation, he argued, was a refusal to show any sympathy for an older victim simply because of his ties to a figure regularly vilified on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

The attack was clearly politically motivated, he was charged in federal court with assault and attempted kidnapping with intent to “impede, intimidate, or interfere” with an official’s ability to perform official duties. www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/10/31/us/david-depape-criminal-complaint.htmlwww.justice.gov/opa/press-release/file/1548106/downloadheathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/october-31-2022?r=1f0orz&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=emailIn addition to the state charges already filed against him, federal prosecutors today charged David DePape, the alleged assailant, with assault and attempted kidnapping with intent to “impede, intimidate, or interfere” with an official’s ability to perform official duties. The parallels between DePape’s rhetoric and plans and the January 6th attack on the Capitol—right down to the zip ties and the references to the American Revolution—have made Republicans desperate to spin the deadly attack as a reflection of political violence on both sides of the aisle, of the general violence they insist is happening in the cities, or—appallingly and without evidence—of a gay tryst gone bad. Others have tried to turn an assault on the husband of the Speaker of the House, the second in line for the presidency, in an attempt to get at her, into fodder for jokes.
On today’s Morning Joe television show, Mika Brzezinski drew the obvious parallels between January 6 and the attack on Mr. Pelosi, calling the incident out as the second deadly threat against the House Speaker’s life in two years, and laying the blame for it on the rhetoric of right-wing extremists, including the former president. “While surgeons operated on the fractured skull of the 82-year-old grandfather, deranged right-wing fanatics, Trump media allies, and some of the most powerful people in the world were feverishly trying to stir up conspiracy theories that distracted from the central political headline of this story,” she said, “that years of Republican propaganda and Trump-fueled fascism led 42-year-old David DePape to break into Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home, seemingly with the intent to harm her.”

From all accounts this man is drug-addicted, mentally ill, unable to hold down a job and living on the streets. Those should be the most primary and obvious considerations. While reading this, especially the last paragraph, something popped into the noggin so I asked my friend google a question. And came up with an article written in 2011 after Congresswoman Gabby Gifford was shot in the head at an event. While this was written about the guy who shot Gifford it could apply to others like this guy as well. Nancy Pelosi has been one of the favorite targets of the right for years. Having said that, the rhetoric in general from the right has gotten nastier since trump appeared on the scene. And Nancy is still a favorite target. This guy in his mental states latched onto Nancy Pelosi who he claims is lying. How would he know or even think she was lying if he didn’t hear it continually. Which means he had repeated access to right wing media. Whatever made him think Nancy was lying he didn’t hear from the local press in her hometown. So it had to be the rhetoric he read/heard from the right. Paul Pelosi was just lucky this guy didn’t have a gun. Words have consequences and in some cases they can set off a chain of events that lead to violence. And those most vulnerable like those that have a drug problem, or a mental illness, or a drinking problem can easily be influenced by the rhetoric of others. So the underline part of the article makes a valid point. From Psychiatric Times…. link” Mental Illness and Political Violence: Reckless Rhetoric, Weapons, and the Media”From the article.. The recent mass murders in Arizona are the latest in our country's epidemic of horrible, hate inspired crimes. The 24/7 media punditry and political spinning has been disappointingly off point in a way suggesting that once again we will learn nothing from our mistakes and that such tragedies will continue to recur with distressing frequency. Three possibly interacting causal theories have been offered: 1.The killer is severely mentally ill and acted on a variety of delusional beliefs that converge on the notion that the government exerts a malign influence on him and on our country. His potential for violence was accentuated by drug use. 2. He was also responding, at least in part, to the vitriolic, violent and inciting discourse and conspiracy theorizing that has become increasingly acceptable on talk radio and the internet. 3. The tragedy was facilitated by the killer's easy access to automatic, assault weapons that can kill promiscuously and rapidly. “ & “Then there is the increasing violence of political attacks. Free speech has too often deteriorated into violent and inflammatory speech-- just the kind most likely to incite and enable those made vulnerable by the poor judgment and impulsivity that occasionally accompany mental illness. Reckless political discourse is equivalent to lighting a flame to kindling. It is irresponsible for those who provide the spark then to blithely disavow the flame. All responsible leaders must disavow the cheap-shots, the demonization of opponents, the smears, the violent denunciations, and the outright threats.”Part of what this guy heard over and over again was probably stuff like this from January 6. Especially since he had zip ties just like some of those on January 6 had.

FWIW, aj2hall , it is pretty likely that he is a classic overstay, although I doubt he ever had a visa as they aren't required to cross the border from Canada to the US. He followed a relationship here 20+ years ago and never left. No visa, no legal status and working under the table got him by. Somehow it is only the Mexicans, South Americans and Africans that set certain elements of this country into panic. Canadians, Irish, etc., get a big pass. Depape has floated around with a variety of political alliances through the years and was clearly on the side of the GOP/Qanon for the last few. How sad that the GOP is willing to use and abuse this man further, suggesting people fundraise his bail and trying to make him some kind of hero for an assault on the spouse of the Speaker just sickens me.

Those should be the most primary and obvious considerations. It is precisely this, if true, that makes the GOP rhetoric of violence so very dangerous. Because some people with mental illness listen to it, believe it to all be genuine, and lacking the same impulse control some others have, take that rhetoric and act on it. When MTG calls for NP to be shot in the head as a traitor, there ARE people out there who take that to heart and will act on it out of some sort of loyalty to the extreme right GOP that is now in power. It is EXACTLY this that makes the regular violent speech of GOP politicians and talking heads so very dangerous. They need to step up, take responsibility, and stop calling for violence. Because, yes, there are people out there who are unstable enough to act on what they believe the party is calling them to do. That Depape may have been all those things listed does absolutely nothing to absolve the right-wing GOP of loading him like a gun and pointing him at Pelosi. Eta: thank you for coming back to this thread. 🥰

This is the latest on the attacker. www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/10/31/david-depape-pelosi-online-radicalization/The complex history of accused attacker David DePape’s radicalization unfolded over more than eight years and several different ideologies, moving from Green Party support and nudist activism, to a hateful mix of racist, anti-Jewish and misogynistic rhetoric, according to terrorism analysts who’ve studied his writings and social media posts. They say DePape’s evolving beliefs show how today’s extremist threat complicates easy left-right categorization, a shift that’s confusing to the public and a bonanza for trolls who exploit the messiness to push disinformation and justify violence. Those details were largely ignored by right-wing figures — including elected Republicans and MAGA stars with millions of followers — who instead reached years back to portray him as a leftist, hemp bracelet-peddling “hippie,” perhaps part of a “false flag” operation to blame the right for the assault. An alternative, unsubstantiated scenario that DePape and Paul Pelosi had a sexual relationship blazed across right-wing news outlets, boosted by high-profile figures such as Elon Musk and referenced by Republican officials. “You get stuff that just feels contradictory, but when you understand how online exposure to propaganda works, it makes perfect sense,” said Cynthia Miller-Idriss, who heads the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab at American University. “It’s a choose-your-own-adventure type of radicalization.” By the time DePape, 42, allegedly broke into the Pelosis’ residence Friday and attacked 82-year-old Paul with a hammer, his writings were laden with far-right messaging that indicated a dark, conspiratorial spiral. His blog posts in October were a mix of bloody images and hateful screeds aimed at a variety of targeted groups including Jewish, Black and trans people, as well as Democrats. He also shared delusional thoughts about an invisible fairy that sometimes appeared as a bird; a purported former romantic partner, Oxane “Gypsy” Taub, has told reporters that DePape is “mentally ill.” “That moment you realize the nudist hippie male prostitute LSD guy was the reason your husband didn’t make it to your fundraiser,” tweeted Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) alongside a photo of a distressed-looking Nancy Pelosi. Analysts say such reactions are dangerous, bad faith attempts to score political points while playing down the seriousness of a violent attack targeting the most powerful woman in Congress. Federal prosecutors on Monday filed attempted kidnapping and assault charges against DePape, noting that, in addition to the hammer allegedly used to strike Paul Pelosi, authorities recovered “a roll of tape, white rope, a second hammer, a pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and zip ties.” After being taken into custody, DePape told authorities that his plan was to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and potentially break “her kneecaps” to make an example of her as “leader of the pack” of what he considers lying Democrats, according to court papers. “Calling this guy a left-wing fanatic today is disingenuous when his chosen path for the last eight years was clearly Alt Right,” extremism researcher J.J. MacNab wrote in a Twitter thread that laid out her research into DePape’s far-right descent. DePape’s turning point appears to have come in 2014 with Gamergate, the vicious campaign of online abuse against female video game developers and critics, a precursor to the rise of coordinated right-wing or bias-fueled troll attacks. “How did I get into this. Gamer gate it was gamer gate,” DePape wrote, according to research compiled by Erin Gallagher, a research assistant with the Technology and Social Change Project at Harvard Kennedy School. Analysts say such shifts often occur not by a singular seismic event but through a gradual process, typically online, where people can click through a smorgasbord of fringe ideologies, picking and choosing what resonates. Sometimes that leads to a melding of extremism — such as white supremacists borrowing Islamist militant phrases — and other times it can lead to a full flip of the political spectrum, such as moving from the far right to the far left, sometimes called “side switching.” There is more in the link, but those are the important bits.

All of this continued hatred and violence is so damn depressing. Do people really hate other humans this much? How is this any form of Christianity? But the saddest part is that some people revel in this deep hatred of others. What a sad way to live. Well, if you look thru history, it’s not uncommon for ‘Christian’s’ to kill masses of people simply because they aren’t Christian or aren’t the right kind of Christian & it is often hand in hand with politics. I mean the crusades, St Bartholemew’s day in France, England in the 1500’s & again in the 1600’s and then again in Ireland, I could go on, history is full of using religious otherism to build hate and then attack people. That was the whole point behind the separation of church & state but apparently some are ready to toss that out the window. I’d say it’s very ‘Christian’ to hate, not saying it’s Christ like in anyway, but Christian’s have often enough made a habit of it. You know “Imagine” he was right

Seems that anyone on the right who is saying this is not acceptable is also saying it is a “both sides issue.” From what I see, the rhetoric and division from the right is much different than that which comes from the left. Have republicans been threatened or harmed over the years? Yes. But it is very naive of the right to think that only their “side” are activated by what they say. And if they truly mean what they say in regards to turning down the heat and hate, then they ALL need to call out those who perpetuate it. Not make excuses or say it couldn’t be someone from “their side” or that his mental state and immigration status negates all that he has said in support of right wing conspiracies. If you don’t do that, you ARE the problem, too.

And only one side remains silent and complicit about political violence. When there is an incident of political violence on either side, Democratic politicians almost universally condemn it. They don't make jokes about it, they don't make snarky comments, they don't make excuses, they condemn it.

www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/11/01/pelosi-home-attack/The break-in at the Pelosi residence was a natural culmination to the rage that’s been on public display for years now, toward Pelosi and toward any number of other left-leaning female politicians — a very particular brew of misogyny and tribalism and eagerly gulped Kool-Aid.
when I think of DePape’s alleged plan to make an example of Nancy Pelosi, I’m going to be thinking about how much time and effort other people have put into building her up as someone who deserves all the hate they can spare.

His legal, mental and housing status is just noise and a deflection by conservatives. It was a politically motivated attack stirred up by the same party that targeted Nancy Pelosi with of a lot of hate, angry rhetoric, vitriol and misogynistic comments for years. Now that same party is refusing to condemn the violence, remaining silent or worse, making jokes or snarky comments about it.

Technically, according to the NYT, he was living in a garage studio. His citizenship status is still undetermined, he did register to vote and voted at least once in 2002. www.nytimes.com/2022/11/01/us/pelosi-attack-depape-arraignment.htmlAfter working together for a few years, Mr. Ciccarelli helped Mr. DePape get away from the streets, moving him into a friend’s garage studio in Richmond, Calif. And from 2002 to 2009, Mr. DePape was registered to vote in San Francisco County and declared himself affiliated with the Green Party, according to county records that showed he voted once, in 2002. He attested to being eligible to vote. Again, his legal status and housing situation are not really relevant. The attack was clearly politically motivated, he was charged in federal court with assault and attempted kidnapping with intent to “impede, intimidate, or interfere” with an official’s ability to perform official duties.

This person is just stoking the fire. Wish they/she/them/her/him/whatever could respond with something substantial. What a sad tale they proclaim. Not believing anything they spew,

I think one other important part is being overlooked in the deflection of his housing, citizenship & mental status - the degree of violence. This innocent 82 year old man was brutally attacked, knocked unconscious, suffered a skull fracture and is in the ICU. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/11/01/pelosi-attack-jokes-conspiracy-theories/In the days since Paul Pelosi, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 82-year-old husband, was attacked and knocked unconscious by an intruder inside their San Francisco home, law enforcement documents have revealed more details. The intruder had a hammer, zip ties, a rope, a roll of tape and rubber gloves. He broke into the home early Friday morning by smashing through a glass door. He woke Mr. Pelosi and stated that he wanted to talk to “Nancy” and that he would wait. His plan, the intruder told police, was to hold “Nancy” hostage, demand the truth from her and break her kneecaps if necessary.
Any decent person would find such a violent assault horrifying. Not so for a number of Republicans and conservatives who have seized on it as an occasion for jokes and an opportunity to spread lies about a political rival’s spouse.
Republican leaders should speak out against violence — and against those who make light of it — or there might well be more of it.

Republican leaders should speak out against and condemn the violence. But, they won't. Regretfully, I think the violence is part of the Republican end game. Winning at all costs is all that matters. This lesson was clear immediately after Jan 6 with their attempts to downplay and whitewash history. Republicans are willing to overlook the violence if it helps them achieve their goals. And somehow they're blaming Democrats for not achieving unity and blaming them for divisiveness. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/01/paul-pelosi-attack-youngkin-lake/At a campaign event last week, President Biden called on the crowd to “clearly and unambiguously” stand up against political violence, while suggesting that Pelosi’s alleged attacker was influenced by Republicans’ inflammatory rhetoric.
“What makes us think one party can talk about stolen elections, covid being a hoax, [that it’s] all a bunch of lies, and it not affect people who may not be so well balanced?” Biden said then. “What makes us think that it’s not going to alter the political climate? Enough is enough is enough.”

We saw the article by a senior editor of The Federalist last week encouraging the right to abandon conservatism in favor of implementing their desired policies by force of violence if necessary. This is absolutely part of their end game. Follows right along with the "that's what you get" narrative - they're attempting to justify their violent tendencies by saying the left deserves it.

Exactly. Any decent person would say this is horrible and wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemy. Yet the R silence speaks volumes.

Here’s the problem - that is their GOAL. It is the means to their end, and we should have accepted it and fought back harder long ago. Denial and wishful thinking have handicapped us. I pray our democracy is still salvageable, but the odds don’t appear to be in our favor.

🥰 That has to be a right wing talking point, because I heard practically the same drivel on my way home from work yesterday. I turn this talkshow host on and listen for a few minutes to hear the rant of the day. This was pretty much it. This talkshow host went on to say that the public needed to see the video tapes of how the attacker got into the house. So he doesn’t believe the police. These folks only seem to believe each other.

Looks like there were at least 2 security fails at the Pelosi house. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/01/capitol-police-cameras-caught-break-in-pelosi-home-no-one-was-watching/This is quite a bit of the article, but not the whole thing. I left out much of the part about how other lawmakers are increasingly nervous. Inside the command center for the U.S. Capitol Police, a handful of officers were going through their routines early Friday morning, cycling through live feeds from the department’s 1,800 cameras used to monitor the nearby Capitol complex as well as some points beyond, when an officer stopped. On a screen showing a darkened street nearly 3,000 miles away, police lights were flashing outside the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), officials say.
The officer in D.C. quickly pulled up additional camera angles from around Pelosi’s home and began to backtrack, watching recordings from the minutes before San Francisco police arrived. There, on camera, was a man with a hammer, breaking a glass panel and entering the speaker’s home, according to three people familiar with how Capitol Police learned of the break-in and who have been briefed on or viewed the video themselves. The 911 call and the struggle inside the home that followed have led to charges of attempted homicide of the speaker’s husband, and attempted kidnapping of the speaker, who is second in line to the presidency. The incident has also put a spotlight on the immensity — and perhaps the impossibility — of law enforcement’s task to protect the 535 members of Congress at a time of unprecedented numbers of threats against them. The Capitol Police first installed cameras around Pelosi’s home more than eight years ago; she has an around-the-clock security detail; and for many months after the attacks of Jan. 6, 2021, a San Francisco police cruiser sat outside her home day and night. But hours after Pelosi left San Francisco last week and returned to D.C., much of the security left with her, and officers in Washington stopped continuously monitoring video feeds outside her house. The targeted security and lack of full-time, active surveillance — even at the home of the member of Congress with the most death threats — reflect the competing demands facing local and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as the balances that lawmakers, their families and security officials have tried to strike in the nearly two years since the attack on the Capitol. Manger said the Capitol Police are on track to meet their goal of hiring 280 more officers by the end of the year and to continue that pace next year. The department now has just over 1,900 officers, slightly more than it had on Jan. 6, but that’s a fraction of what it needs, according to some estimates. An external review ordered by Pelosi shortly after the January 2021 attack found that there were more than 230 vacancies in the two months after the insurrection and recommended that the Capitol Police eventually increase the size of its force by roughly 850 officers. That would take years, given that about 100 officers leave or retire each year, and the force is now accepting only about 1 in every 16 candidates. The result is a police force already stretched incredibly thin, needing more staff to properly secure the nearly 60-acre Capitol campus and provide around-the-clock protection to the increasing number of lawmakers facing serious threats of violence. Congress jumped the Capitol Police budget from $516 million for 2021 to a recommended $708 million for 2023, according to the House Appropriations Committee. The Capitol Police determine when lawmakers who are not in leadership or the line of succession get protection, based on the gravity of threats against them. It has become common over the years to see members on Capitol Hill with agents walking alongside them everywhere they go. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had personal security in 2017 after a death threat that came from Venezuela, while liberal targets like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) often appear with security. Members of the Jan. 6 congressional investigative committee receive Capitol Police security protection when they are in Washington and protection from local law enforcement when they are in their home districts. What concerns the Capitol Police is that threats against Pelosi have been unrelentingly high, and rose considerably after Trump took office in 2017. When Pelosi is staying at her San Francisco residence, officers actively monitor the external camera feeds to ensure perimeter security, one official said. A former senior member of the Capitol Police said that cameras were installed simultaneously at the homes of congressional leaders many years ago, during the speakership of Rep. John A. Boehner (R-Ohio). The quality of the cameras has improved over the years, as well as the ability of Capitol Police to maintain a video archive of the footage. But the threats against Pelosi have increased exponentially since then. Security was ratcheted up for months after her home was vandalized with spray paint, fake blood and a pig’s head in the days before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Along with Pelosi’s residence, vandals also defaced the home of then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after Congress adjourned without passing a bill approving $2,000 stimulus checks. Officials with the San Francisco Police Department repeatedly declined to comment on security measures around Pelosi’s house in the city’s posh Pacific Heights neighborhood, including whether there was an alarm system at the residence that would have triggered an alert with the department. San Francisco police officials also are facing growing questions nationally and locally, including from Pelosi’s neighbors, about why there wasn’t a more consistent presence outside the speaker’s home, given the intensity of the threats that she and other lawmakers have faced as well as previous incidents at the residence. Since Friday, neighbors said, at least three San Francisco police squad cars have been positioned outside the residence, along with unmarked black SUVs and plain-clothed security officers — often signals that the speaker is at home. Pelosi’s house is also protected by a private security system, two people said. When tripped, that alarm is supposed to notify San Francisco police and, secondarily, the Capitol Police, one of them added.
On Friday, the Capitol Police never received an alert from the home security company, that person added. It was unclear if the system was armed at the time of the break-in. Officials with the San Francisco Police Department repeatedly declined to comment on whether there was an alarm system at the house and if the department received an alert about the break-in besides the 911 call.
