Our towels don't smell bad, but they have zero smell which drives me crazy! I have tried all different detergents, liquid, powder, pod; sanitizer liquid, sanitizer powder; OxiClean powder; vinegar, pinesol, baking soda, scent beads, dryer sheets, wool dryer balls.....by the time the towels come out of the dryer there is NO scent to them at all! I would love a little fresh scent on them!!

I started buying all white linens a few years ago because I love the smell of freshly bleached crisp, clean whites.
We have 2 sets of colored towels, though, and I've never had an issue with smell. I use hot water to wash and then dry them on the hottest setting for a full cycle. I think the heat and total dryness prevent odor.
I find that it helps to thoroughly dry stinky stuff (like the load of wet clothes my dh left in the dryer two days aho) and then rewash. I do think smells are retained if I don't dry first.

I just looked up Persil. Maybe the scent from it or the beads bother your husband. Perhaps wash the towels more often. They always go in the hamper when they are dry. Lately, I have to run the dryer longer and take the towels right away. It has been suggested to not use fabric softener on towels. We use Nellie’s that we order online from Costco Canada and dryer balls. We also wipe out the drum and gasket of the washer occasionally. Twice a gear we empty out the house and clean the little basket in the bottom front of the machine.

Vinegar. We had this problem with gray towels we bought that were super thick. They always smelled mildewy even after washing and when I would dry off, I could smell it on my skin. I couldn't bleach them because they were gray. I stopped letting DH wash them because he used fabric softener which contributed to the problem. If they are colored, wash with hot water and throw in vinegar. Do not use fabric softener in the wash or dryer sheets. I wash on the antibacterial setting and always use oxyclean. I dry on the antibacterial setting with no dryer sheet. They now smell clean.
I prefer to use our white towels because I can bleach them and I really like the smell of bleached whites. But never use dryer sheets as they make them less absorbent.

We used to have that problem during the winter - we are in Oregon and in the cool, wet months, the towels just didn’t dry thoroughly enough after using. Bleach, vinegar, and the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer would fix it for a load but it would happen again. Not sure what’s so different about Charlie’s Soap laundry detergent, but since I started using that, it’s never been an issue again. I think it just cleans more throughly.

It’s probably not that the soap cleans better, it’s more likely that it rinses out more completely. A lot of these issues result from too much soap, using liquid detergent or the fact that the HE washers now just don’t get all of it out because they use so much less water. But hey, if it works that’s great!

We always put our damp (from drying off) towels on a rack in the sun to dry. We haven't had a musty smell issue since we started doing this.

Hang them over the edge of the hamper until they are fully dry before putting them inside, wash towels separately, use hot water, detergent, and vinegar. Store towels in a ventilated location.

Another vote for using vinegar when washing. I wash our towels and my teenage DS clothes with a bit of vinegar each time just to get the smells out. Something we do different here (Morocco) is we don't dry our clothes in the dryer but hang it out in the sun. After washing and hanging in the sun...zero smell.

I had this issue with my DH but it was me who was constantly washing and washing then finally it hit me that maybe it was him.... i realize when he showered he just was putting soap on with his hand then rinsing off. I bought him a shower poof and got him to use that and no more smelly towels.

I don't smell it, but it bothers him enough that he will only use a towel once and then puts it in the hamper. The hamper has to GO, or at least never put towels in it. Damp towels will mildew in a hamper, even if they aren't in there very long. Have a hook or something to hand the towels on to dry, even if you are going to wash them after one use. I use something called ROCKIN' GREEN that I order from Amazon. I use this to do a 'strip' of smelly things. I am able to soak in my washer, and I am also able to get really hot water in my washer for the soak (Some HE machines can't do this). But I will do a strip/soak in Rockin' Green for a few hours, then rinse and wash again in hot water with Persil laundry soap. I dry and then never let a wet/damp towel sit in a hamper or in a pile.

I use vinegar in the rinse to get out the stink.
We got My Pillow bath towels a year or two ago, and they've never stunk once. No need for vinegar with them. They are nice and thick, too.

Something else I have used to remove funky odors is Crest-O-Pine. Think Pinesol, like it used to be. Pinesol no longer has pine oil in it. So it doesn't work like it used to. Crest-O-Pine is a small manufacturer and it does put pine oil in. Damn - it is some real stuff! When I have funky clothes, I add 1/2 cut to a hot water load. It does smell very piney! But I either double rinse, or wash again (Persil). It still has a pine smell going in the dryer- but does not smell pine after. Even after the clothes line I don't smell pine. Good stuff - expensive, but that is the shipping. Crest O Pine - what Pinesol used to be!

Let them dry, between uses or after one use before tossing in the hamper.
In the spring and fall when the furnace doesn't kick on much and the windows aren't open yet we hang out towels on the shower rod, flat. In the winter with the furance running all the time the air is moving and dries the towels on their hooks. Same with warm summer breezes.
I also either let my dishrags and tea towels dry overnight in the kitchen or hang them over the edge of the laundry hamper.

Our main bathroom is in our basement, and while there is a fan, it doesn’t get circulation like other rooms. Mildew smell towels were a big problem for us. This is how I fixed it.
Strip plush towels, lots of methods show you online. It’s a big, long job. Once stripped, wash them. I use bleach with every towel load. Yes bleach. Absolutely no fabric softener, dryer sheets or anything with scent in it. I use scoop of washing soda and borax in each load.
I stopped using plush towels and switches to turkish towels. I do not bleach. No smell issues. They dry very fast. My family wants plush towels so we have half and half.

Our master bath is a small room without much air circulation. I started running a stand fan to help prevent mildew in the shower stall. As long as I set the fan on oscillate (to also blow on the towels), the towels don't get that funky smell.
