I happily share all the recipes I have found, the original versions since I always tweak things. So many people struggle with the art of baking, and I know that mine will still probably be better.

I have about half a dozen recipes that are my own originals. Give the recipes to anyone who asks. I`ve shared a couple on here before now. If the recipe is not mine I will not add the tweeks I have added.

I have a carrot cake recipe that was given to me 40+ years ago. The lady who gave it to me was an older lady with no family to pass it down to. She made me promise I’d never ever share it. Uhm ok. The cake is awesome! I’ve been asked many many times to share it, but I have kept my promise. Even my daughter doesn’t know it. My son in law swears that he is going to have it carved on my tombstone. Lol awwww, but if you don't pass it down, who will it go to when you are gone or don't feel like making it? My mom put together a binder with all our family recipes and called it "from generation to generation" or something, and gave it to me and my sister. But what's funny is we will look thru it and be all "when the hell did she ever make Mrs. Nixon's chicken salad?" or "I have never seen her serve this once in my life!" One time I saw a recipe *I* brought to her and I know damn well she has never made it. But it is awesome we have a collection of what she thinks are special recipes

I also do not understand not sharing recipes. It seems silly to me, but if you don’t want to share it, then just be honest and say you don’t share recipes. I think it is crummy to give the wrong recipe or put wrong measurements. It is worse than crummy. If you don't want to share, just say no. It is evil to give wrong recipe, just mean and evil.
I don’t think sharing Martha recipe is evil. It has to be a pretty decent recipe to begin with. Martha did not build a reputation on crappy recipes. Hard ones maybe, but crappy not usually. Tweaks can be hard to explain. Half the people you give it to are gonna tweak it themselves too. I wouldn’t give out a bad recipe - that would be mean.

I’m not much of a baker and rarely tweak a recipe except maybe to add or decrease spices. I prefer to cook and hate when someone asks me for a recipe. All my best cooking has no recipe. I could try to write it out for them, but it would never be quite right, and then people get mad and think you gave them a bad recipe on purpose.

I tweak almost every recipe I make. And I write all over my recipe books with those changes and reminders to myself. So when I am asked for a recipe, I generally note the changes I made too. Especially if they ate mine and loved it... I want them to be able to make it that as well.

add me to the list of people saying, even if you share the recipe EXACTLY how you make it, it won't be the same. it just won't. i do that with a couple things i make and people still tell me mine is the best, so you can feel better about sharing it.

Whenever we have a potluck for friend or sports get togethers I make Carmelita's. Everyone loves them and I only make them when we have somewhere to go so we/I don't eat them all. I found the recipe in a magazine 20 years ago but made tweaks. However, someone else also made similar tweaks and it is on the Smucker's website now. When people ask for the recipe I just point them to the website. However, at a potluck this fall one of the other moms (whose sons are on several of the same teams that my kids are and we have talked about the Carmelita's several times so she is well aware that that is what I usually make) brought them as well. They didn't turn out the same but I was still a little irritated (I think I had also signed up and put down that I would make them but she still brought them anyway). I feel like I need to find a different signature dessert now if she is going to start bringing them to get togethers.

I feel like I need to find a different signature dessert now if she is going to start bringing them to get togethers. That happened to me years ago at work. I started making this delicious cookie I found on Pinterest, so it wasn't my own. It was peanut butter cookies with white chocolate and pretzels in it. They are so good. I took them to work for a potluck, and one of my coworkers asked for the recipe because she was going to a cookie exchange and loved them so much she wanted to make them. I sent her the link, no biggie. Well, after that, every time we needed to bring cookies or treats to work, she made those cookies and called them 'hers.' LOL She would say, "Oh, I'll bring my peanut butter pretzel cookies!" I was annoyed because then I had no reason to bring them.

I would just say "sorry, I don't share my recipes".
I have several cookie recipes that I get asked for every time I make the cookies. I don't share them because they were shared with me and I was asked not to share them and 99.9% of the time if a recipe is shared with me I'll fiddle with it and make it my own.
Most people understand but there are others (my in-laws) who get pissed.

I don’t think sharing Martha recipe is evil. It has to be a pretty decent recipe to begin with. Martha did not build a reputation on crappy recipes. Hard ones maybe, but crappy not usually. I was referring to the folks who said they would change the amounts of things. I don't think it's crummy to tell people you use a Martha Stewart recipe, but make some tweaks to it. I just think it's crappy to offer to share a recipe, but then change amounts of ingredients that will make the recipe not turn out. I guess I am salty about this topic because my grandma was a fantastic cook, one who did not share recipes. Of course, she is gone now, and no one has any of her recipes, which makes me sad. She did share her carrot cake recipe with me once, and if I make carrot cake, that is the recipe I use. She also shared one other cake recipe, for a cake that used to be my dad's favorite cake ever. My mom and I tried to make it so many times, and it never turned out. Like not even edible. We are both pretty decent cooks, so it was not user error all the times we tried. LOL We are convinced she changed a few things from the original recipe. She also made the most awesome poppy seed dressing, and again, would never share the recipe. I've tried many different ones over the years trying to recreate hers, and I have never been able to. Unless you are a professional chef or baker who can make money off your original recipes, I really do not get the idea of not sharing them. The only time I don't share when someone asks is if it's something I don't use a recipe for because as someone else said already, that is hard to explain. In that case, I will just say what is in it, but that I don't use an actual recipe.

I’m also someone who doesn’t get the secret recipe drama. If you are a business selling baked goods, sure. If Martha Stewart was not a sharer, you wouldn’t have had a base to tweak.
But, if you don’t want to share I would be honest about it. If you want to point them to the original recipe I would tell them yours has tweaks you’re not sharing, that’s fair also. However, to those suggesting giving an incorrect recipe, that is an asshole move.

I've never understood gatekeeping recipes, although I hate when I share a recipe and then that person signs up to bring it to a gathering where I would normally take it.
Anyway, if you really dont want to give the recipe, give the original and say that yours is based on that one.

Also, if you don’t share a recipe it will never become family history. Once you’re gone, so is the recipe. Instead of people eating great-great-great grandma’s special chocolate chip cookies, they’ll be making Martha Stewart’s, with her name attached.

My cousin has her mom's recipe for chocolate chip cookies and they are ALL THAT, but she will not share. I agree with Just T that I'd give the MS recipe and say you made tweaks to it, but like others, I think it's crappy to change ingredients (not that you said you would!!). I get that you want that recipe to yourself. I don't cook with recipes so some days, my food is beyond amazing and other times, it's okay. It's never awful. I like cooking. But I have never - not never ever once, made stellar chocolate chip cookies. I wish I could. I'd probably even follow a recipe. It's my favorite cookie ever. My vote is to keep your recipe.

This reminds me of the Geigo commercial, where the gecko gives his neighbors some biscuits and the man eats them all ands asks for the recipe.
It's my mom's secret recipe.

It's your DAUGHTER ...... I loved my grandmother's oat meal cookies. She always told me it was the recipe from the box. I've made that recipe so many times I can't count -- and they are NEVER like my grandmother's cookies. I don't think she would have misdirected me - but to this day I wonder about that recipe and it rather colors my thoughts.
GIVE YOUR DAUGHTER THE RECIPE!

I also don't understand not sharing a recipe. Others like the recipe enough to ask for it, why deny them? If you are not Martha Stewart or published author, why not make people happy? If you don't plan on selling the cookies and becoming famous I fail to see why you wouldn't share. I know there are people that are totally divided on the subject and it fascinates me!

Are you planning on going in to the cottage baking industry to sell your delicious ccc recipe? If not, then why not share it. Proudly put your name at the top of the recipe "RosieKat's Almost Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies". Write the recipe of a beautiful index card and proudly share. I know that I would love to have it!

You may not need to worry too much about that - my Sister and I use the same chocolate chip cookie recipe and her husband has said for years that mine taste better than hers. LOL. I have given her every tip and trick I know, but he still likes mine better. She is over that now and just lets me make the cookies. LOL

I thought recipe hoarding was something only old people did. You know, people who identified with their ability to be Suzy Homemaker. That's not me -- I generously share recipes, whether someone asked me not to or not, as well as lots of other information like cleaning tips, crafting tips and etc. (And believe me, I can keep peoples real secrets like Fort Knox kept gold.).

I completely don’t get not wanting to share a recipe. I’m so flattered when people ask for one of mine and I’m more than happy to share.
So that being said, I’d share the original recipe but then also do my best to describe some of the tweaks you do. Now I want some cookies!
