Ah, the famous Dead Aunt cookies. I need a copy, too. I think I tossed the copy I printed accidentally.

Now, at the risk of asking something heinous, is this recipe really and truly good? Cause I seem to remember a while back someone saying it wasn't all that great.

Are they worthy as a thank you token? I was going to make faux starbucks cranberry bars but want to try these.

I made them last year. They were nice and simple but didn't blow my socks off. Not too sweet, nice texture. I thought they'd be a nice base for decorations or fancy icing.

I've made them for a funeral and I had people chasing me down for the recipe so I'm thinking they can turn even the most somber of events into at least a fairly happy culinary moment!

Maybe I'll give them another try sometime.

I remember people commenting that the icing/glaze is what made the difference.

I made these for a cookie swap, using orange instead of lemon in the icing, and I had someone chase me out of the party to get the recipe.

I like them a lot but I will admit the icing really made a difference. I like orange and lemon better than almond. A LOT better.

I made them with some finely grated lemon zest in both the cookie dough and the icing. I also didn't drizzle the icing on them while hot, I waited until they were cool and then dipped them so that the entire top held a nice amount of the tart icing. I like every bite to contain the tart icing to complement the cream cheese cookie.
I made them to take to a new neighbor's home and the husband kept eating them and eating them. He insisted he get the recipe for them because he absolutely loved them.
For me, as others stated, the lemony tartness of the icing really makes the cookie. Consider putting a thicker amount than called for too. I think it takes the cookie from really good to amazing.

I hate citrus so I switched out the lemon for Almond and everyone always ask for the recipe.

I make them as Lexica does -- very lemony with a healthy dose of the glaze.

As a non-chocolate person, these cookies are fabulous!!! Like Lexica said, use the lemon in them. Almond is ok but lemon puts them over the top. Cool the frosting quite a bit before spooning it on. And before I tried almond or peppermint in them I'd go with orange or lime. The buttery, flakey cookie just begs for citrus.

I made these once. I dipped the cookie into the lemon icing so the top of the cookie was covered well. It was too much icing for me. I would have liked the cookie much more if I had drizzled a small amount of the icing. Of course, I see from other posts that others would have preferred the cookie the way I made it. My suggestion would be to make the cookies and drizzle on some and dip the others. That way, people have a choice of how much of the tart icing they get.

I thought they were excellent and I have had several people ask me for the recipe.
It's funny how everyone's taste is different. I saw all the raves about Yvonne's Apple Bread on another thread, so I made it - I thought it was very mediocre. Thought maybe I did something wrong so I tried it again and took it to a party - I had quite a bit left over and no one asked for the recipe, so I assume no one there thought it was all that great either.

kckckc, I didn't like the apple bread, either. I will have to try these cookies, though!

Oh they are awesome! And I use lime, too! And if you put the zest in the dough, too, it's wonderful AND pretty! I also think I'll flatten them out some before I bake them next time just to see what they look like. Sounds fun!

You can freeze them unbaked or freeze them baked. I freeze them baked all the time. They thaw out in minutes and taste just as good. They don't last long enough in our house for me to do any type of shelf life test. They are gobbled up in no time.
