I have gotten into the habit of grabbing at least one thing every time I go in the basement to add to the donate pile or to trash.
I would benefit from developing that habit!
So, I made some progress.
I did try on all my clothes (ha, not much stuff. I DO need to shop for myself)
Tossed a pair of jeans that had worn too thin in the thigh area to safely wear to work due to chance of splitting. I had kept them to wear while working in the yard, but heck, I don't wanna split my pants in front of the neighbors either. Trashed em. (And I'm weird, but i also ripped the thin area so there was a hole, and no "going backsies " on tossing them).
Tossed several pairs of shorts that felt too short. And was why I hadn't really worn them last year.
Tossed a pair of slippers that had seen two winters' use and were falling apart.
Tossed several shirts and pj pieces that were too worn out, too stained, or just didn't feel right.
Tossed two sweatshirts that were a decade old and looked it.
I bagged up and moved winter clothes. No use in having them all mixed in if I'm not wearing them.
I also went through two bags of stuff that I bagged up right around when my mom passed away, and ignored since. 2021 calendars, unused purse contents that had just been emptied into bags. old masks, bandaids and ointment. Such random stuff. Was able to toss 99% of it. Weird to think it had been sitting on a shelf for two years, like it was important, or something.

The box of donate stuff by the front door is full so I need to make a run to Salvation Army. The two sand pails and shovel that I posted on Buy Nothing that no one wanted will get dropped off at the public sandbox next to the post office in town (there are a bunch of toys in a storage area there so I’m sure no one will care if I put them there). I’ll repost the bags of new and nearly new socks that no one claimed, maybe closer to the start of the school year. I really hate throwing away literally brand new socks that I can’t donate because they’re not in a package.
I have a bunch of summer clothes I want to drop off for donation at a different place and haven’t had time to do it, so that needs to be a priority for this week since I will be over in that direction almost every day taking my kid to and from her volunteering gig. That will open up a lot of space in the hallway closet and in the guest room. A friend borrowed our big suitcases and just returned them and they go back in that closet so it would be a good time to pull a bunch of stuff out of there.
I also need to have DD go through all her school supplies that she brought back home. Other than the used notebooks, most of her stuff can be used again in the fall so I have to get that stuff sorted out. We’re redoing her bedroom this summer and the desk she had been using in the office has been abandoned and is now piled with unloved stuff and all the drawers are also full of stuff. I’d like to just get rid of that desk to reclaim the space in the office, maybe put a shelf in that spot so it can be used for actual functional storage. I was really surprised by how fast the 4’x2’x6’ shelf in our mud room filled up.

I'm still plugging away at the photo project (my mum's photos) - 2004-2019 are all labelled and organised - both digital and print - and I'm making progress on 2003...only another 120 years to go, lol.

That’s a huge task. I sorted through and scanned all my mom’s photos one year when my sister was visiting and she was a huge help. The photo project that has me hamstrung is the bag full of weird sized, really old negatives that I think were my aunt’s or maybe even my grandma’s. I don’t even know how to begin to proceed with that because most of them are pre-35mm. I have a scanner for slides and negatives but none of the negative adapters are for the size film that most of them are.

I scanned them back in 2020 which was a big project - now I'm making sure they are labelled. If I had a bag like that, I would probably take it to my local computer guys - they do all sorts of stuff like that. They digitised audio tapes and video tapes for me as well as extracted some photos that were on an old floppy disc. I would be surprised if they couldn't digitise negatives.

I haven't tried it yet, but I just saw that the photomyne app can scan negatives with a light source and your smart phone. I've used that app before and it's done some really cool things with restoring color and so forth so it might be good for negatives too, and you wouldn't have the barrier of what size they are.

Maybe instead of yelling at the tool box (that we put near my car when we moved in 15 years ago as we didn’t have a better spot at the time, and which we haven’t moved since) every day that doesn’t shut completely which I close each morning and that slides open by the afternoon which I then re trip over I should go through it, get rid of duplicates and weird screws etc and put it up on a shelf. I think I just found a declutter challenge for myself this week 😁

Ooh I’ll have to look into that! I do have a decent light box. These are all black and white negatives, most are probably about 3”x4” or so, they’re a really weird size. My other thought was to try to make a negative holder in the right size out of chipboard or something and try to scan them and see if that works.

photomyne is ok.. but it doesn't give the greatest scans.. and it can be challenging to get it always to work right. I set a big group of slides to a scanning service.. as it saves me the time.. I get them downloaded on my computer quickly and they clean the slides. I personally use scan cafe.. but there are several out there. I often use photomyne for photos I don't want to send anywhere, or in someone else's possession.

Some might be 80-90 years old so I hesitate to ship them off somewhere which is why I haven’t done anything with them. Plus there are hundreds of them and I’m not sure it would be worth the expense since I have no clue what’s even on them.

crazy4scraps. you might look for a local photo store for help.. I have a stack of negatives to take in to be printed.. they are 100 plus years old... scancafe lets you review the scans before you make final payment, so you can delete ones you don't want.. their sales often get slide scans down to 25 cents per slide.

Was going to go on a small buying trip for booths. (Mainly going to thrift stores and book by pound place) next week but that's on hold. Freezer on fridge as gone out and we discovered massive amounts of mold in closet in TV room. My Mom seems to think hail damaged the roof and water then caused the mold. If my Mom hadn't been cleaning/organizing yarn and had went to put some in said closet, who knows when we would have discovered it. (We rarely go in the room, much less the closet).
My Dad did haul off some books. I need to go through my closet again. I threw away a bunch of stuff from back porch, namely a old blanket Baby had been using. It since for replaced with another old blanket. Also threw away some stuff that was broken or torn. Going to take recycling off Tuesday when I go to homeless shelter to serve dinner since it's across the street from the mission. Last time I was at the recycling place, I saw a guy who I had served at shelter. It looked like he might have been dropping stuff off from the shelter. He waved at me. I guess he remembers me now. It looked like his hand was no longer bandaged which is good.

I had a lake weekend with two of my cousins recently so I took the last of my mother’s costume jewelry for them to go through. I ended up just sending everything left with one for her daughters to look through with the plan that the remainder be given to their little girls for dress-up play.

Cleaned off the back porch. (Mainly getting old toys/bedding in trash). Would wash more clothes but having issues with both washer and dryer and tired of dealing with it. It's almost 5pm and I am tired of going to bed. I am exhausted.

That's a great place to put them. Kids who play there will definitely appreciate it.

Freezer on fridge as gone out and we discovered massive amounts of mold in closet in TV room. Oh bummer. I hate when life just rains on you like that. Hopefully the fix and the clean up aren't too difficult.

I need a photo fairy to magically organize and label every photo I own.

So, I tossed all the rest of the ill-fitting, worn out clothes, and just bought new ones all at once. I bought three new pairs of jeans, & six solid shirts. And I'm just going to add a few new pieces every month until I feel like I have enough. I think I'm finally going to have my version of a capsule wardrobe with all pieces that can be mixed and matched.

I need a photo fairy to magically organize and label every photo I own. so do I, lol. But apparently I'm it. These are my mum's photos - I still need to finish labelling my own. But my mum always said she would scan and label her photos when she retired but she never did get around to it. I want to leave less of a mess to my kids so... I bought three new pairs of jeans, & six solid shirts. And I'm just going to add a few new pieces every month until I feel like I have enough. I think I'm finally going to have my version of a capsule wardrobe with all pieces that can be mixed and matched. I desperately need to do this also. I'm travelling to the UK in Oct 2024 and I have a goal to at least have enough of a capsule to pack by then. First step - figuring out colours.

First step - figuring out colours. Very true!
I went with dark denim blue, and solid jewel tone shirts. I gravitate toward burgundy, forest green, navy, and plum. And then I also like dark and light gray. I skip black (too much cat hair to look good), and white (I'm too spill prone, and would have stains like a toddler within minutes of wearing it)
I find sorting photos and labeling digital photos goes better when i am sitting back and watching tv Digital photos I'm good at.
My Achilles heel is the mountain of photos from generations ago that are pre-digital.

So, I had a small epiphany while deep cleaning the powder room.
I want to streamline.
While I was cleaning, and had taken the decor off the shelf, I decided that I was only going to put back some, and take out the rest. And then I thought to myself that I could do it with everything.
Streamline everything.
I'm really liking the freedom in the thought.
Also, I filled a trashbag in the basement, and it's going out on trash day. It's stuff that the kids haven't played with for four to five years. Play Doh stuff. Bits and bobs of stuff.
I also earmarked some of my stuff that can go out.
I have plans to go through the Halloween costumes and donate those that don't fit even the youngest anymore.
And I want to streamline the Easter stuff. Keep a bag of the plastic eggs to fill. Keep the baskets. And that should really be about it.

Currently I am organizing one folder in Photos (mac). It's an album of all the quilts and projects I've made and it is taking a good bit of time. So far I have made albums for each craft, then as I sort the photos into albums I am tagging them with keywords. Now rather than one big album filled with all sorts of craft projects I'll be able to find what I am looking for more quickly. Not sure why I never bothered to tag photos in the past, but will be doing so going forward.

(Thought it was odd they were working on a holiday). No idea what we are going to do on the mold. My Dad will probably drag his feet like he did on old house. I don't know if I could make calls to home insurance and such since my name isn't listed as a co owner. I am on vehicle insurance as a driver for 2/3 of the vehicles but that's it. (One I don't touch is a stick shift and my Dad mainly uses it on the property to haul stuff). Going to try to throw some more stuff away today. Been getting sick due to higher dose of medicine so I am going to try to hang around the house.

Can I ask what everyone is planning to do with the older photos and ones you are digitizing? I'm sharing the digital version on Google Drive with my kids and my sister/BIL as I digitise and am updating as I add names/dates/places to as many as possible. The end goal there is that once they are as done as they are going to be - I'll put them on external hard drives or something like that for each of them. I inherited all of my mum's photos (and she inherited her mum's, her aunt's, and her maternal grandmothers) as the family historian. I'm also sharing relevant photos with extended family. The physical photos (again my mum's) - I'm labelling to the best of my ability and am storing as close to chronologically as possible. The really old photos are being stored in archivial boxes with as much information as I can manage - which sometimes is a name/year/place and sometimes only some or none of that. The 4x6 and smaller pics are going into the 16-case Iris boxes - I also have 5x7 ones for the photos between 4x6 and 5x7. Larger? it depends....some I'm keeping in archivial boxes, some I plan to loosely scrapbook (background, mat, and journalling of who/what/when - I have a portrait album for my family already (1991 on) and I'll do one with the pics of me and my sister from our childhood. I have children who want to inherit the photos and also want me to label and organise them - so I'm doing so. At some point, I'll be downsizing and they'll hopefully have the space then to take over the storing. I've also been sharing older photos that were taken in my mum's hometown on a FB group for the town - I've shared copies (digital or physical) with some elderly people who were in the photos and with some relatives of those pictured. I want to do more of that as time permits. I have photos from when my mum taught in Belgium and Germany with the DoD schools and I'll be sharing those with a group that saves photos and memorabilia from the DoD schools and does teacher reunions etc... my mum used to go to the reunions. I'm reaching out to the school she taught at in the 90s/00s to see if they have any interest in her school/classroom pics. And I sent some photos from one of her Girl Scout troops to a GS museum in her state. I'll be putting together another packet for them in the future. I would love to make photo books from some of her photos but not entirely sure I'll ever get around to that.

the best of the pre 1950's photos.. I have put in albums, labeled and scanned. I am at least trying to label all the slides I am digitizing, and I share random ones with family.
my goal is to start organizing all the paperwork and photos into narratives.. to organize the family information I have.. I am close to getting started on that.

I have all of my grandmother's and mom's photos. Years ago I put my grandmother's photos into CM albums in chronological order. My sister and I tried to divide our childhood photos between us 3 kids. We made progress, but have more to do. There is also photos and memorabilia of mom that I really don't know what to do with to be honest. Mom was an only child and there really aren't relatives who would be interested in any of the old photos. My kids probably don't want to be saddled with all the photos either. Heck I was careful to only make 4 scrapbooks each of their childhoods/school/sports since I didn't want them to have to rent a UHaul trailer to take them someday LOL. I feel the old photos are a blessing and a burden all at the same time.

I need to go through several more crates with her, but I don't want to overwhelm her.

Can I ask what everyone is planning to do with the older photos and ones you are digitizing? My plans are bare bones, just trying to write identifying info for them.
I seem to be the one person who wants them at all, but even for me, they are a back burner project.
Now main fridge has stopped working. We moved everything we could to deep freezer and the fridge in carport. Service guy is supposed to be here Tuesday. (Thought it was odd they were working on a holiday). I hope it is an easy and cheap repair.
In my neck of the woods, a repair may be more expensive than buying another unit at a dent and scratch place. But that all depends on availability to you.
No idea what we are going to do on the mold.
Google "Mold remediation"
Do you know the cause of the mold? Water/high humidity has to have gotten to the area. Find the leak or cause and stop it.
You will probably need to rip out and toss any carpet and drywall that has been affected.
The area will need to be thoroughly cleaned and thoroughly dried, usually with high powered fans.
Honestly, I would check the insurance contract to find out what they will cover and have a mold remediation company come out to fix the problem. It can be an overwhelming task.
Not having it fixed quickly should not be an option, especially with your health concerns.
But I understand that sometimes professional fixes can be cost prohibitive. Anything you need to do yourself, mask up for. Wear disposable gloves. Use huge contractor size bags to dispose of moldy stuff.
I'm really sorry you have to deal with this.
Going to try to throw some more stuff away today. Been getting sick due to higher dose of medicine I hope you feel better soon.
