I'll put Shimelle and her "best of both worlds" kit into the mix. This one is quite different from the rest. Shimelle puts together her kit monthly, and does 2 videos a week on youtube showing you how to use it. She has a list of the items in her kit: if you shop at Scrapbook .com you can click on her list, and simply add all the items to your cart (she adds some basic supplies at the bottom of the list that don't change and you don't need monthly). Here is the link to the February kit contents if you want to see what I mean: shrsl.com/2db89 How do you find the list on Scrapbook.com? I used your link and that worked but I can't figure out how to get to it from the Scrapbook.com home page. I tried to find it a month or two ago and never did find where it was hidden.

But if you want to see older or current kits you need the different codes. They are linked under Shimelle's youtube videos - for example this code shows January's kit that she is presently creating with ldli.co/e/4325x3n

Welcome back!
I think I have already give you some of this advice in a different thread, so forgive me if some of this is duplication.
Since you say you have a Silhouette, it’s great for scrapbooking! Don’t overlook the possibility of doing print and cut for your pages, as well as cutting shapes and titles. I have a Silhouette subscription, which I got on sale, so I get the 99 cent files for about 11 cents (less when they are on sale). Scrapbook supplies generally cost more than that. They also offer paper designs that you can just use to fill a shape, then print and cut it. I don’t always remember to use that feature. A little known secret: you can scan in paper you have and love, add it to your patterned paper designs, then use it to fill cut shapes. The color may be slightly different, but it gives you the option of using papers you love but tend to hoard.
I have a huge stash of stamps, which I sometimes use in creating pages, but I have not had much luck with using the Silhouette for cutting out stamped images in the way that Silhouette recommends. However, if I scan in a stamped image with a one inch square of colored card stock next to it, I can use that one inch image to size the stamped image correctly in Silhouette software for tracing and creating a cutting file for that stamped image. Then I use the “cut first, stamp second method,” but you need a stamp platform to do that. However, once I do that, I have a cutting file for that stamp from then on, and the “cut first, stamp second” method can give you a better centered image.
I use my Silhouette a LOT for paper crafting, but I also have a Big Shot and dies, especially if I want a stitched edge that is more pronounced than the Silhouette will give me. I love the Queen & Co. Foundation dies, which are great for both scrapbooking and card making. Most of their dies are stitched. I have no affiliation with them, just love their dies.
I don’t care for subscription kits. When I make a page, I start with my photos and pick papers that compliment my pictures. Kits rarely work for me. There are too many items I will never use.
I also don’t do classes. A lot of the same techniques are taught online for free, and paid classes are geared toward getting you to buy every new product there is.
The only markers I use are alcohol ink, such as Copic. However, they bleed through to the back of your card stock and paper. I use them to color stamped images, cut the designs out, then attach them to my pag. I use Zig or Sakura if I want to write on my layout. However, I usually prefer to do my journaling on the computer, print it, cut it out, and mat it, like I do my photos.
I don’t use Thickers. If I want dimensional letters, I can cut titles multiple times, then stack and glue them. I never need to worry about storing letters left over, or missing enough of a letter that I need. I have a ton of fonts, and lots of patterned paper. Thickers can be bulky for storing if you have a lot of them. Card stock and patterned paper is less expensive and you can choose your font and paper.
As far as trends go, if I like them, I will incorporate them, but I no longer pay much attention to what is trendy. If I see someone post a page using a trend, style or technique that I like, I may incorporate it if I can do so in a way that compliments my layout. Everything I do will be centered around the photos. If a trend suits the photos, great. If not, I will use what I like better, whether trendy or not. I’ve been scrapbooking longer than many here (since 1996). I worked for the LSS and taught classes there, based on the trends. In all honesty, there are some I’d do over if I had the time, because the trends didn’t always suit the layout, especially when I look back. I didn’t go in big for tear bears, but I did for paper dolls, and those pages kind of make me cringe now.
I am a stamper, but I was a card maker before I was a scrapbooker, and I still make cards. I love stamps, and use them in a variety of ways on a layout (embellishment, page background, border, journal spot, etc.), but if you aren’t already a stamper, I don’t recommend that you go down that rabbit hole. About 1986, I took a class on how to save money by making your own cards with stamps. I have spent a lot and saved nothing, although I really love making my own cards, and most people seem to enjoy getting a hand made card. Considering how expensive store bought cards are now, maybe I’m not completely in the hole. If you already own stamps, then use them on your layouts. If not, don’t feel you need to buy stamps for scrapbooking.

Welcome back...it's such a cool hobby. I come and go as my seasons change. I'm now an empty nester and have more time I recently found that Teresa Collins has a neat subscription (www.teresacollinsstudio.com) "create your story" and I am loving her projects every two months. Easy to do...get you back in the groove.

Just jumping back in for an update. Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. This is an amazing group and I really value your words. For pens, I've bought a few different brands in a few colors to see which I prefer. It's been kinda fun to try different brands. Several of you mentioned Shimelle's classes/youtube. I've watched a few of those. The thing that stood out to me the most was (and someone above posted this too) to use your LSS instead of ordering online. I live very rural and I'm lucky enough to have a LSS. I've decided that if I'm going to purchase new items I'll go through her first. I really want to keep her around and with me being back in the hobby I might be able to do it all on my own. Also, a little ironically my son started working as an accountant for a Utah based scrapbooking company that has kits. He's not into scrapbooking but they "open their store" for their employees occasionally and he's bought me some fun kits so I'll start playing with those. In the last couple of weeks I've jumped in by trying to finish a 15 year old album and I've been able to pick up right where I left off -- kinda, I'm piecing memories together through the pictures. Overall, I've been happy with what I've been accomplishing. I've been playing more with my Silhouette and papers. Hopefully one of these weekends I can jump onto a live crop. Thank you all again!!

Just bumping this thread back up for any updates? I am on the brink of making a return to scrapbooking after exclusively card making for the last several years. I have no scrap specific supplies left, so thinking maybe going exclusively into kits for a while. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

Maybe check out Shimelle’s Best of Both World’s kit. Lots of options without buying things you don’t like or won’t use.

I don't subscribe to kits bcz I have enough stash - but I like the Scrap Room. I've purchased from them before and I like how they give bits of new lines so you can try. www.scrap-room.com/

Welcome back. I second or third the sentiments to follow along with Shimelle best of both worlds kits. If you still have a stash you can for sure integrate that in with her kits. She is a great resource I think and maybe because she (was) a teacher she is just so great at explaining what she is doing and why. Another great idea would be doing a Vicki boutin class. Depending on your style she usually does classes for each of her own collections as well as sometimes she does a class other collections and 10 page kits. I think you get a lot of value for your money here and you will get full instructions and product to put everything together. Vicki also does free live classes every friday night, a lot of these are mixed media based so if you are interested at all in learning this I would watch a bunch of these. She has hundreds of hours worth of past lives available. I would say my most favorite newer supplies I use a lot that I didn't 15 years ago is Oxide inks (they are great for any mixed media which is pretty popular) and great for stamping. Just be for warned once you start buying them it is hard not to buy the whole collection. My best advice here would be to do about 4 colours at a time starting with your favourites and then going from there. Also loving the new rub-ons from 49 and market and stencils. I will like a few youtubers below that I subscribe to and enjoy. Nathalie Desousa - love her style Shimelle BOBW
vicki boutinSara Scraps
Scrapbook quebec - simple style great for beginner I think

mandolyn9909 Thank you so much for the links, right off the bat I know Scrapbook Quebec is going to be a favorite. Her simple style is the kind I love, with more embellishments than come naturally to me, but still don’t overwhelm the page so I hope to learn a lot. I appreciate it!

I specifically came to the board for the same reason....I've been paper crafty with cards for quite a few years but lost the scrapping mojo after major life changes. I would love to scrap again.

I still have so much stuff that once I actually started scrapping, organizing, and then again re organizing, I realized I should try to use what I have. I've enjoyed Shimelle's youtube videos/lives - which have given me a lot of inspiration. I have a local, small scrapbook store, so I decided any $$ I would use on kits, it would be better to use there to help keep her in business. That's one of the main ways that I have updated my stash.

Another great way to add product to your stash is doing warehouse box sales. There is a good chance a lot of the product would coordinate and you would get fairly recent product at a fraction of the cost new.
