I call it “eat the freezer”. We have 3 refrigs with freezer compartments and a large freezer in the garage. First I make a complete inventory. Then I start meal planning. It’s a pretty detailed meal plan, including the recipes and sides. That then generates what fresh items will be needed for each weeks meals, so weekly groceries are kept to a minimum. We don’t eat out from Jan thru April unless there’s an emergency. I’ve been doing this for a lot of years. Covid lockdown was not a problem for us. Awesome strategy!

Set a regular alarm on your phone to remind you to actually take whatever needs to be defrosted out of the freezer!

I eat out of the freezer or cupboard as a way of life, due to budgetary constraints. Eating out, drive thru, and take out expenditures quickly add up.
I hate cooking every day, for me it's a tedious chore. I much prefer already made and in my freezer frozen meals, that just need to be reheated. I do multiple meal cooking about once or twice a month. I usually cook 2-5 hours making several meals (of which I get many portions, that I freeze in individual servings). Sometimes, I do a couple meals choices, sometimes more hence.... the difference in times. I buy premade food (Sprouts has a container of shredded chicken in the ready made food section, I buy that and portion it individually and freeze, it costs less than buying chicken breast and cooking and shredding them myself). I also buy premade muffins that I freeze individually, so I can take one to work for lunch if I want to. I love the mini brown bread from the OutBack restaurant, so I stop by the takeout every few weeks and buy several loaves (.50cents each loaf + the tip)...and I get it unheated...if it's heated then frozen then reheated it gets hard) and freeze it, so if I am not that hungry I will have a loaf for dinner or one for lunch. I am an extremely picky eater, so my menu choices of what I like to eat, is much smaller than the average person, and I am very okay with that.
I would recommend, that you take inventory of what you in the freezer and cupboards, and figure out what meals you can make out of what you currently have (you can purchase any of the other needed ingredients to complete a meal). Make a list of the meals that you can make, and start making meals from the list. You can either make them as you go or spend a few hours cooking and freeze several meals that can be reheated.
For the future >>> make a list of meals that you want to make (you could use an index box and index cards, make categories "chicken, beef, no meat, Italian, BBQ, soup and sandwiches, casseroles, pasta dishes, etc...), and that your Family likes to eat. That way prior to grocery shopping, you can looking through the index box, pull the card with all the necessary ingredients listed for the meals you want to make for a week, a couple weeks, a month, etc... and then purchase the ingredients to make those meals, and you won't end up with a random assortment of food (none of which is a full meal).

Working on eating from the freezer and pantry. Using up a couple of sauces/condiments in the fridge too. There was a good sale a few weeks back so I added more meat but I couldn’t pass it up.

That’s how we normally cook. We tend to buy 1/4-1/2 a cow or pig at a time plus we get bulk packs of chicken thighs or breasts from Costco so we always have a freezer full of stuff. We also tend to stock up on frozen veggies so we have an assortment to choose from. DH pulls out a couple things at a time. We cook that stuff up over the next few days and usually pick a frozen vegetable to go with it. Sometimes we get a few bagged salad kits or some seasonal fresh vegetables and we add that into the mix.

Every now and then we have what my family “affectionately” calls a fridge clearer. That is when I refuse to buy any more food until the old is gone (both fridge and freezer and sometimes even pantry!) like the least favourite packets of chips from the mixed boxes… I’m looking at you plain/salted flavours… or frozen foods like those last three nuggets, two party pies, handful of wedges etc. Probably not the most inspiring, cohesive or delicious meals, but anything and everything tastes good with potatoes am I right?!?😂 I hate food waste though so we only have a regular sized fridge and the small freezer on the bottom - no big deep freeze (but we have a small family and don’t need to buy in bulk so that helps!) I also don’t go to the butcher until I’ve completely run out of all proteins in the fridge so I don’t stockpile sausages or cuts that I’m not inspired by. I will add though that we are within five mins drive of four butchers and three major supermarkets so this also helps!
As op is a recipe girl and not like me (I’m okay with one eating nuggets, one eating pies, I have a salad, dh has a steak to clear it all out!) I have in the past googled the word recipe and then the three or four ingredients I’m struggling with. Have found some forgotten favourites and great new recipes doing this!

We have a chest freezer from 1985 in our basement. I cant dig through it and I certainly cant reach the bottom. We need to go through it and make a list of what we have. The issue is maintaining that list, but I like the idea of noting how many of each item with a symbol that can be crossed off. Once we have the inventory, I'll start using things up. I dont do "challenges" because I think that it has become a silly, overdone thing. It's just something Im going to do.

We do all the time....it helps that I am a Culinary Arts instructor and a Chef.....and my dh is a fantastic cook also......he needed to lose quite a bit of weight due to health problems.....so we changed up our eating habits....he's lost 62 pounds and I lost 22.....we cook as healthy as possible.....and we also do a lot of freezer meals, we tend to cook on Sundays for the following week. All main dishes are prepared, and I am in charge of all the various sides.....he's retired, so that makes it easy, lol..........we won't do any shopping for anything other than some fresh fruits and veggies this month, then a good shop in February. Liking to cook and a broad menu is the way to go!

I do it frequently. I only have the freezer drawer on the bottom of my fridge and there just isn't a ton of space and there's no way to keep it organized. So a couple times a year I pull everything around and rotate the stuff that's fallen to the bottom up to the top so it's visible again and then every few months I try to power through a bunch of freezer food and only supplement with fresh fruit and veggies as needed.

I'm pretty sure under the meat layer of the freezer is about 1000 random Otterpops same same I'm trying to slim down our grocery budget and the pantry/freezer are full so yes - trying to meal plan based on what we have on hand and just supplement with perishables. This week (I menu plan Wed-Tues): Wed - sandwiches (lunchmeat from freezer, homemade bread, I did buy cheese, tomatoes and lettuce) and leftover coleslaw Thurs - Big Mac Salad (ground beef from freezer, leftover lettuce and tomatoes from Wed, I bought onions and cheese) Fri - taco salad (ground beef from freezer, leftover topping from We/Th, leftover sourcream from last week - I bought Doritos) Sat - steak (from freezer), boxed potatoes au gratin (pantry), and sauteed zucchini (last week's leftover zucchini) Sun - (DH's birthday) Purchased swordfish, rice pilaf, and california blend veg plus ice cream cake (his requests) Mon -salmon balls (ingredients from pantry), roasted broccoli (leftover broccoli from last week) Tues -egg salad sandwiches - we already had eggs/mayo - homemade bread (the currently frozen second loaf from Wed's batch) There's always fruit (I bought cherries this week but we still also have apples, grapes, and bananas and there's applesauce in the pantry) and raw veggies (had carrots and cucumbers, bought peppers) on the table also.

I'm more of a recipe person and not a "throw things together and make it work" person. Has anyone done this? I do this all of the time, and I say that we're having SURPRISE for dinner. It may be easier than you expect. Think protein, vegetables, and carbs (rice, pasta, bread, etc). See what you have and what goes together pretty well. If I've picked out a few things but I'd like some ideas, then I just google those ingredients together and see what comes up. For a recipe person like yourself, there it is. For me, a good general idea may be all I need. The closer you stick to the typical way you prepare things at first, the more comfortable you'll be and the better your results will probably taste. For example, cook your meat/poultry/fish/seafood a way you already know, but maybe add a seasoning or sauce that you picked up on a whim to try and now want to get rid of. Casseroles or stews/soups are great ways to use up a bunch of random foods and have something that ends up tasting pretty decent. Give yourself permission to fail. Tell your family it's SURPRISE night, and they just might surprise you by helping you pick out ingredients to try. It makes it more fun and takes the pressure off. No harm, no foul if someone doesn't like the results. Once in a while you may hit it out of the park, and then you've got yourself a brand new recipe.

Almost every night since groceries went crazy. We have a ton of venison, and I am heartily sick of it. Thank god we bought 5 pounds of boneless chicken tonight!

Every now and then we work to run down the stash. The only things we buy at the grocery store are things like milk, bread, and produce. It is surprising how long we can keep it going. I feel like we need to do it again right now. My husband thinks we need to buy groceries.

I tend to buy fresh meat regularly rather than looking to see what we have frozen so a big priority is to check what we have first before buying more. I also have a bunch of frozen fruit in the freezer that needs to get eaten, and maybe some bags of frozen veggies. In the pantry I know there are a lot of things that have been there awhile so need to use them up, and also eat all of the snacks that we have before buying new. Some of them are perfectly fine but apparently less desirable since they haven't been used up yet. But they will continue to get passed over if I keep buying more of the "better" snacks. This comment interests me - so does that mean when you purchase meat, you put it in the fridge and use it soon after buying? I only do that if I am going to use it that night or the next night (like a pork roast or package of ground beef or something). Otherwise I am scared it will go bad! Mostly, we buy a big package of chicken breasts and split them into smaller 1 lb bags, and then put in the freezer. Or we'll buy a 12 pack of hamburgers and split into 4s (we are a family of 4) and then freeze them that way. (We don't have a costco, but we do have a BJ's). We eat a lot of salads for lunch, I'm pretty much the only one who likes frozen veggies so we dont have a ton in the freezer.

I actually started using up my freezer meats a couple of weeks ago. I'm down to a package each of beef and hamburger, and out of chicken so will need to stock up again. I do need to go through the rest of the miscellaneous stuff in there still.

We have a chest freezer and an upright freezer. Every couple of years I alternate which one gets defrosted. Last Fall I decided it would be the chest freezer. The hope was to drive later in the Fall an hour or so away to stock up on meat from Olds College when theyreopened after renovatiions (never got there due to weather etc). We moved things around and used up food from the upright freezer. We then moved quite a bit of food from the chest freezer into the upright one and started using up food from the chest freezer. We kept to pails in it for older food to use up first. It was nice when we decided to defrost it that there was not a lot of food in it. We did put some in the downstairs fridge while we defrosted it. Afterwards, we shredded a bunch of zucchini from the garden for muffins etc and froze them. Our tomatoes from the garden all seemed to be ready later last year so we froze quite a bit. Before Christmas they had sales on turkeys at Safeway. We bought a smaller one to have in the new year and a boxed Butterball turkey breast for sixteen dollars. The regular price on the turkey breast is over thirty dollars, Two weeks ago Costco had eight dollars off a three pack of fresh chicken. We had one the next day and froze the other two.

But often I need to freeze half after opening the pack and using it on a meal. That is why I need to look in the freezer first now. To use up that stash. I prefer to buy fresh so I don’t need to thaw it but once the package is opened (like a huge pack of chicken from Sam’s) I like to freeze what we don’t eat in that meal unless we will make it the next day.

I started keeping an inventory by writing right on the freezer door with a dry erase marker. If I take something out, I cross it off. It I add something, I add it right after I close the door. The marker has a magnet and eraser so it just stays with the freezer.

Alright...we had a basketball tournament today so no major decluttering/list making got done but while I was making dinner I cleaned out one of the kitchen cabinets that has food in it. Got rid of some things that were expired or that we just don't cook with anymore. Going to work on the rest tonight and tomorrow. I also made my meal plan for the next several days.
Sunday--Creamy ham and potato soup Using potatoes that need to be used up and leftover frozen ham from Thanksgiving Monday--Cajun cream chicken with noodles. Already have the cream cheese that needs to be used and everything else Tuesday--basketball games late afternoon into evening so need a crockpot recipe to avoid getting pizza or something (unless we have a lot of leftovers to use from the previous nights). Slow cooker sweet fire chicken. Also have all of the items for this and need to use up the peppers and pineapple. I do need to buy rice but will also have frozen stir fry veggies that we already have Wednesday-spicy shrimp fried rice Thursday--another game night. Slow cooker buffalo chicken chili Friday--cheesy pasta with leftover smoked turkey (frozen from Thanksgiving). Going to alter a different recipe that I have to work with this instead of sausage.
I need to buy two cans of pinto beans and rice. I think I have some already chopped soup starter (onion, celery and carrots) in the freezer so am going to dig around for this before buying new. I also need to buy some milk but I think I have all of the other staples for now.
I also know that I have three turkey burgers left in a package in the freezer so will have at least one of those for lunch this week. Otherwise I will likely have leftovers for lunch.

I take a full inventory of 2 fridge/ freezers and the pantry of meal items. I exclude condiments, snacks, cereal and drinks as those don’t last long anyway. I then make a list of meals and mark the ingredients from the list that would be used in those meals.
Ex-4 lbs of ground beef will make 4 meals so I try to write down A, B, C, D meal ideas and note sides or veggies for each with the same letter. This way, I can look at the inventory and know if I’ve already tagged that item for a meal idea. Once I make the meal, I cross off that idea and the ingredients from each list. These lists usually only lasts a couple of weeks so it’s not long term. And I only go through this process if I notice the freezer and pantry getting full, so maybe 3 -4 times a year at most. It really does help to use up everything so it doesn’t get freezer burned etc.
It’s a good time to purge expired or unwanted items as well.

Not assigning the meals to certain nights yet, but this is what I'm planning....
Beef Stir-fry - just need to buy broccoli and one of the sauce ingredients Roasted Chicken Drumsticks - have everything IP Chicken Noodle Soup - have everything IP Pulled Pork - just need to buy buns IP Spaghetti - need to buy spaghetti (only choosing this meal because someone gave DH a fancy bread kit that we are making to go with it) Waffle night - have everything leftovers night - we will definitely have pulled pork left, not sure about others
I have plenty of side options - potatoes, sweet potatoes, frozen veggies, baby carrots.
