When I was a senior everyone exchanged photos. All parents paid for back then was the photos where were taken during the school day. Now, around here, most kids have photo shoots outside of school time and pay for the photos and the photo shoot time. That extra expense is hundreds of dollars so most parents only order photos for close family members.

Kids stopped exchanging long before camera phones and social media took over. No one traded pictures when I started teaching in the early 90s. I can think of two reasons: today they are so expensive and the schools all do yearbooks so there is no need to trade. Not all schools do yearbooks. Most elementary schools I've worked in do not actually. And I defintely traded pictures in the early 90s. It's interesting how things differ from region to region. I've taught in 4 different elementary school and one middle, and my kids attended 6 different elementary schools and 2 middle (in four different states). Every single one of them published a yearbook.

My oldest daughter (7th grade) has never exchanged photos. It makes me kind of sad that kids don't do it anymore. I read this thread and dug out my old high school photos from my friends. We wrote funny and many times sweet notes to each other on the back. Aww, makes me think of all the good times in high school! I just decided to scrap those photos. I'll do pocket pages so the notes on the back are visible.

I bought extra photos last year for my DD's to exchange (they were in grades 4 and 7) and when the photos arrived they both looked at me like I was crazy! They said no one exchanges photos, they didn't even realize it had been a thing. I think widespread use of technology, Facebook, phone photos and selphies has completely eliminated paper photo exchanging. Same thing here. Never been done. They give them to family and that's it.
