I just tackled my papercrafting inspiration... It now all fits in ONE small cube instead one small cube plus overflow.
I re-sorted my scrapbook sketches into one-page and two-page and tossed a BUNCH along the way.
Found 4 books I can donate
Sorted my card sketches into keepers and not keepers. I did keep the sheetload sketches separate for now - I'll revist that later
next up my digital inspiration folder...that's going to be a project but since I rarely actually look at it, I think I need to be pretty ruthless

digital paper crafting folder significantly downsized
lessons learnt - no more summits...I just DON'T follow through and DO the projects, I just download them. - print sketches, don't save them -print and colour? needs to be printed or I'll forget about them -all those cool printables? yeah, I don't use those and if I do want to, I look online not in my folder -why did I download so many digital scrapbook freebies? I don't scrap digitally

sketches I printed out are filed in my binders and I'm feeling accomplished. All that is left to deal with are some print and colour pages and printed sentiments that I need to cut and put away
and one question...I have several digital documents and one 19 page print-out (from 2004!) of journalling prompts basically along the lines of All about Me....I did start an All About Me album way back in the day (probably about 2004 tbh) but haven't gotten back to in .... a very long time. I still like the idea of incorporating more about me into my albums whether in a separate album or interspersed in my everyday albums but ... will I actually use these prompts or...should I just delete/toss since they've been hanging about so long?

I’m the same way with digital things… out of sight, out of mind. I would probably try to reduce the 19 pages to 1-2 and if that doesn’t seem worth the trouble, just toss them. Or commit to making at least a few of those kinds of pages by a certain date and see if you need or use the printout. I think you’d probably find similar inspo very easily if you needed it, or you’d just do your own thing.

Thanks joblackford - I've tossed the printout and I'm putting a deadline on the digital files - use it or lose it And the printed sentiments are cut out and I've coloured 3 of the 7 print and colour pages. I'm hoping to finish those up tomorrow and turn into cards this weekend

And I really only use the Sheetload sketches because they're linked to a timeline and I thing I enjoy (watching videos). I have some other sketches that I never even look at that could go. I'm guilty of ignoring digital clutter because it doesn't take up visible space. Good for you, clearing out this stuff!

I agree with both of you joblackford and Shakti - paper people need paper sketches! I think my next area to tackle is going to be SVGs - I know I have plenty that I'll never ever use

Right now I am trying to go through my stamps. I did the round robin, and that was great, but I have stamps that I did not put in that I wish I had. So I am setting them aside and if I don't use them at all for at least 6 months, I am going to donate them.

I had stamps set aside to put in that I couldn't find while the envelope was here! Now I have a designated spot!

I went through my SVGs and got rid of the ones I absolutely positively won't use - went from over 900 to just over 500.
lessons learnt:
-just because it's free, doesn't mean I need to save it -stacked words are NOT my thing -super intricate? nope -I don't make tee-shirts/tote bags etc... so I don't need those designs -just because I signed up for a summit doesn't mean I need to save all the downloads

My room doesn't need a complete overhaul, but I do need to figure out a good way to store my current projects within easy reach. I usually have 2-3 projects at a time using different supplies.

-just because it's free, doesn't mean I need to save it I've been guilty of downloading things just because they're free and I might use them one day. Now my rule for freebies is would I pay full price for this? If I wouldn't then I probably have other things in my stash I'd use instead, so I don't download.

Not scrapping related... but adjacent... My old HP computer wasn't letting me load any more pictures on it. All of the drives were at capacity and I couldn't even add an app to be able to take stuff off. Found the new mini Mac with a different screen for photography editing. It took me two days and two different children to help me fine tune it all, but it is done and so fast. Now I can start picking photos for November of 2023 to scrap. So happy.

Sounds very cool, 950nancy . You bought a new Mac Mini for photos only? Or just as a replacement computer overall? I need voices of reason. Did some heat embossing this morning. Almost grabbed the new little packet of silver that came in a MMH kit, but instead grabbed the jar of unknown provenance. Definitely had some issues, spots where it didn't seem shiny even though it seemed melted. Pondered whether I might have scorched it. Did a little googling on embossing powder issues/age. Looked at the jar again. No branding at all, only a little sticker on the bottom 7 nn 04. Why, that looks like a date, but why would anyone put a date and nothing else on embossing powder? And if they did, why would I have embossing powder from 2004...what was I doing? I was pregnant with my younger child...hadn't I given up on crafting by then? Unless that's when I did that one photo Christmas card...the one where I bought supplies from a small local stamping shop. Who might've jarred embossing powders they bought in bulk and dated them for stock circulation. Did that card have silver embossing? Why, yes, yes, it did! So, I think I really need to chuck, not donate, the silver embossing powder from 2004. And then the jars made by Rubber Stampede and Commotion that I'm pretty sure are at least as old. Well, the Rubber Stampede ones are probably a decade OLDER! And I'm guessing that since embossing powders are essentially microplastics, the least irresponsible thing to do is seal the jars tightly and toss them closed and intact into the bin. Right?

If there’s a chance that they’re 20 or 30 years old I give you full permission to toss them into the trash without testing them or feeling bad. 2004 is apparently 20 years ago… I find that hard to believe, but everyone swears it’s true. Treat yourself to some new ones if you think you’ll use them. I have clear, white, and gold, plus one glittery one I never use. I decided that I’d rather use colored ink with clear than bother stocking a bunch of powders that rarely get used. One day I’ll get silver and perhaps rose gold, perhaps.

Yes. I believe I have four jars of embossing powder that are all 20 to 30 years old. The gold I bought a replacement for, but didn't toss? The silver I got a replacement in a HA kit. The 30 year old ones are opalescent and clear; I think I have a newer clear and I know I have some other "funky" effects like glitter and satin and whatever, so I'm sure they can somewhat replace the opal.
Thanks, Jo! I did need permission....

I have a laptop that I use for scrapbooking, school, and social media. I did get the computer primarily for photos. I culled about 5,000 today. these are photos that are primarily wildlife and some family portraits. It was so fast that I got it done pretty quickly.

As I look through my stash, trying to select a paper for a layout, I am paying attention to both sides. I've resorted quite a few papers to a different theme or area. For example, I moved some wood grain papers from my Christmas stash to my wood grain stash. I've moved some papers with a solid background to my sorted by color stash. It's helping me see older papers with new eyes, so they get used.

If clutter prevention counts (and it should, right?), then I won today! I went to Michael's and saw the display of $5 12x12 PP pads and liked a few and left them all right there on the shelf and went about my business!!

If I could have all the 5 dollars-es I spent on those back I would have probably 50 dollars to spend on something I really really wanted that I thought was too expensive. You did awesome!

So, it's been a while, but I'm back with another Shakti's Weird Decluttering Question of the Day™:
I purchased Club Scrap page kits with some extra papers to make my Italy scrap books. Another collection I loved the paper but didn't love the cards in the card kit, so I just bought a bunch of papers and embellishments.
I have now made the scrap books and gotten 18 cards from the other collection. Some of the leftovers are pieces I would never in a million years use on a card. Some others I might. I know that I need to put what I know I won't use into the donation box or the recycling bin.
My question is this: is there a minimum amount of "stuff" required to actually make it valuable as a donation? Can I donate the clearly scrappy stuff now and then decide to give up on making more cards and donate the rest later? Or does that just turn both donations into trash? Am I making any sense at all or...?
|
|
|
Post by Linda on Jul 19, 2024 23:01:16 GMT
I think if what you are donating is usable - if not by you, but by someone (in other words it's not broken, dried up, etc...) then it's okay to donate in small amounts. One person's 'trash' is another one's treasure and even if what you're donating won't work for a layout or a card on its own, it might be just what someone else needs as a finishing touch for a layout/card or for a junk journal, planner, or other small project. Obviously if your donation spot has guidelines, follow them but otherwise, don't overthink this Shakti

Yeah Shakti I agree with Linda and would add the reminder not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Maybe it would be better to wait and donate all the leftovers together if you have the bandwidth for that, but getting some of it out of the house now would probably be better for you, and that’s the only thing you can really control. The question of what makes a donation worthwhile really depends on the donation center and timing and a bunch of other things you can’t control for, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thank you! I'm sorry I keep needing these pep talks....
I will put the things I know I won't use in the donation box. Between now and whenever I'm able to get into the crafty thrift shop, I will ponder how likely I really am to be able to keep track of the things I think I might use enough to actually use them. That is for sure another concern....

I'm sorry I keep needing these pep talks... I would guess that more than just you are benefiting from the 'pep talks' - I know I get benefit from the answers you receive and I doubt I'm the only one. Keeping asking away

The scrappy stuff is in the donation box. I gathered the things I might use on cards together in a bag...and put it in my "up next" sort of bin. Usually this has selections of stamps and dies, etc. from the new and unused bin that I intend to play with next, either because they're seasonal or because I've been cursed with a vision. I hadn't thought to use it for "use it up" consumable products before now, but I think it might work
