Damn, there are going to be a lot of deaths from this one. Reading reports of a lot of apartment buildings collapsing and a lot of Syrian refugees being affected.

That's my take too although I had forgotten about the big loss of life from one of their previous earthquakes, 17,000 in 1999. The pictures are showing some high rise buildings flattened while neighbouring buildings are still standing. One picture shows the centre of one high building dropped away while the rooms on the edges didn't. So random.

On boy do I feel for these people. So so many aftershocks that are big enough to be positively nerve wracking.

There is a large Polish community with NATO and I had several Turkish women in my French class and the English conversation group that I ran. I’ve heard from one and she’s ok. They live in Ankara, which is pretty far north. But she’s 8 months pregnant and worried for family and friends. Hopefully the others will respond this afternoon.

My daughter is currently studying in Cyprus for the semester. They had a smaller quake a little while before the first one in Turkey. This morning she said they felt another one. There was no damage at her university, but still scary. The damage and loss of lives in Turkey is heartbreaking.

The reports just keep getting worse and worse. This is horrendous! As a side note, is anyone else's news agencies reporting it as Turkia / Turkiye? I've never Heard Turkey referred to as Turkia before today. On our ABC Radio, the reporter said that it was a request from the country to be called Turkia instead of Turkey.

I’ve seen the Turkiye and assumed it was a language respectful spelling. Of course Twitter jerks weren’t having it. It seems to be a good trend like with Kyiv and not saying The Ukraine etc

I worked with a young guy around 20 years ago. He referred to me as his American Mama. We stayed in touch on FB but both a friend of mine and I realised today he's no longer listed as a friend. I have no way to find out if he's ok. So heartbreaking

I was looking at the appeals from Save The Children and The Red Cross on Facebook. The comments are disgusting along the lines of “we never received help when we were flooded” “let the ‘Sultans’ of Turkey sell their gold plated cars” “charity begins at home” etc etc. It beggars belief that people have such an attitude. Life in Britain and other countries may be hard for many but it’s NO comparison to what these FELLOW HUMANS are dealing with.

The United Nations agreed to recognize the country as Türkiye in June, and the U.S. State Department announced last month that it would start using that spelling in formal and diplomatic settings. The Associated Press, whose stylebook NPR and other news organizations follow, has not formally adopted the new spelling just yet.

I have been seeing footage come over my FYP on TikTok and it's just devastating. There is some footage of someone standing in what looks like a parking garage and the camera is focused on the pillar holding up the building and it literally is broken in half and you see it jump and separate and come back down on itself and you can't even tell it's broken.
How many buildings are like this? They are still standing but just ready to topple over when it looks just fine? And its the dead of winter and these people have no shelter! The wails of cries all over, it's making me heartsick for these poor, suffering people.
My feed alternates between this kind of footage and then the next is some outraged idiot screaming because Beyonce didn't win Album of the Year. I just can't.

I've just seen footage of a baby born under the rubble being passed to someone by a rescuer! I wonder about the mother - I hope she can be saved too.

Yesterday I saw a segment where a man and his family were in their car in a parking garage to try to stay warmer and worried about the safety of that.

From what I saw on the news, the rescuers found the baby next to her deceased mother. They even had to cut the cord to get baby out of the rubble.
