I've posted before that due to my health issues, I cannot always handle going up and down the stairs, especially late at night. There are also occasional days when I am dealing with extreme fatigue that I don't go downstairs all day. I may sleep most of the day away when the bad fatigue hits me. For these reasons, I trained my little dog to use a potty pad that I put on my shower floor area. I just leave the sliding glass door cracked about a foot for him to enter. He is awesome about using it and hasn't had a mishap since he was a pup in training.
A few months ago, I noticed that in addition to the pee spots in the usual center areas of the potty pad, there were some right up next to the edge against the shower wall. I couldn't imagine my dog getting into a position of squatting that close to the wall. And even though he is a male, he only lifts his leg when we are outside and he's peeing on a bush or tree. He always squats to pee when using the potty pad. I casually wondered if he was now doing both for some reason. I also noticed that this only happened with the upstairs potty pad, never with the one I keep downstairs. It just seemed really strange that he would switch up like that. It was no big deal, other than requiring me to sanitize that shower wall daily, which I did right before I took my shower. It was just odd.
So this morning, I am the bathroom and in comes one of my female cats. She steps into the shower, backs up to the wall where the potty pad is located, and pee'd on the wall and edge of the pad! There are two very large litter boxes in my bedroom for her to use. I clean them a couple of times a day since all three cats use them, so there is no reason for her to refuse to use them. This particular cat doesn't like to leave my bedroom, and typically stays laying on my bed or in the cat tree looking out the window while I'm downstairs. That explained why this was never happening downstairs. I don't know why the cat would suddenly start using a potty pad instead of her litter box.
This has been happening for the last few months. I know that a cat peeing outside their box is typically a sign of a bladder problem. First, she was at the vet for her yearly exam a month ago and the vet didn't find anything wrong with her. She had her teeth cleaned and was a bit groggy when I picked her up, but that's how she always is after a teeth cleaning. I would think if it was a bladder issue with that cat, I would have seen other symptoms by now and the vet would have certainly noticed something. I have seen her use the litter boxes to pee in too, so she comfortable using them.
Has anyone seen something like this before? Does my cat just think she's a dog? She has been going over to the dog's wet food bowl and finishing up any chicken scraps he's left in there. This cat always gets her own separate bowl of wet cat food because the other two cats can share a large plate, but this kitty will avoid the group plate until the other two are finished eating, then she will go to it. I figured they were intimidating her, so she gets fed with her own bowl in another area.
