So... Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis opened up publicly for the first time about how he and his wife, Casey DeSantis, ended up exchanging their vows during a fairy tale wedding at Walt Disney World Resort — only to engage in a brutal battle with the family-favorite company 13 years later. *** In the interview, Casey DeSantis acknowledged that the revelation, which came ahead of Election Day, "created a lot of news." Her parents had the idea that they get married at Disney World because they always looked forward to visiting the theme park when she was growing up in Ohio, she said. *** Casey DeSantis shared in the SiriusXM Patriots interview that she wouldn't be taking her three children to Disney World "until things change a little bit over there," though she acknowledged her wedding there was "a fun time" and revealed that her parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the theme park. She also opened up about her first date with the future governor, who is widely viewed as eyeing a 2024 presidential run. www.businessinsider.in/politics/world/news/ron-desantis-admits-getting-married-to-casey-desantis-at-disney-world-ended-up-being-kind-of-ironic/articleshow/98242125.cms

The people DeSantis appointed to the board are all loyal to him and just as awful as he is. One co-founded Moms of Liberty. www.npr.org/2023/03/06/1160997679/disney-board-desantis-ziegler-peri-garcia-special-districtBridget Ziegler is a Sarasota school board member who rose to national prominence as a self-labeled parents' rights advocate, fighting against critical race theory and LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
A mother of three, Ziegler co-founded Moms for Liberty and helped lay the groundwork for the Parental Rights in Education Act, known to its critics as the "Don't Say Gay" bill. Disney's opposition to the legislation served as a tipping point in a growing feud between the company and the governor.
Her ties to conservative politics are wide reaching. Last month, Ziegler's husband, Christian Ziegler, was named chairman of the state's Republican Party. She also chairs the Leadership Institute, a firm that recruits and trains potential conservative candidates.
Ziegler publicly attacked Disney last year for asking a high school marching band to cover up its logo, which features its Native American mascot, in order to perform at Magic Kingdom.
What happens next? Disney has not responded to multiple NPR requests for comment since last Monday's bill signing, but previously said it wouldn't fight the takeover.
State Democrats, on the other hand, have called DeSantis' move a reckless act of government overreach.
"Disney still maintains the same tax breaks — but their First Amendment rights have been suppressed," said Rep. Anna Eskamani, the state representative whose district includes Disney World, in a statement. "It sends a message to any private individual or company that if you don't purport to what the Governor wants, then you'll be punished."

de santis is nuts if he thinks disney will cave to being used as a political stepping stone for someone's bid for presidency. disney has the resources and longevity to fight back. they have seen presidents, governors and ever changing political sentiment come and go. this is just another blip in their history.

Love that! Win for Disney!
The agreement allows Disney to build projects at the highest density and the right to sell or assign those development rights to other district landowners without the board having any say, according to the presentation by the district’s new special legal counsel.

I don’t know how DeSantis and the legislators didn’t think this was going to happen. They really are as stupid as I think they are since they apparently thought Disney was going to just roll over and let them do anything. Disney has the resources to hire the best lawyers out there and litigate these issues forever if they choose to do so.

Disney is also hosting the world's largest LGBTQ+ event in the world this fall. I would guess they are too along with John Deere, but if they're attending and acknowledging the working power of the LGBTQ+ community, they're not trying to erase them like DeSantis.

In the meantime, the taxpayers of Florida are on the hook as DeSantis and his minions throw it all into fighting this.
That part is not funny, but the whole situation is making me laugh. We all knew Disney was being too quiet about all of this.

It is going to cost the taxpayers multimillions of dollars, more like a billion plus... Among other things, a “declaration of restrictive covenants” spells out that the district is barred from using the Disney name without the corporation’s approval or “fanciful characters such as Mickey Mouse.”
That declaration is valid until “21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, king of England,” according to the document.*** But board members also approved hiring four outside law firms with Chairman Martin Garcia citing a need for “lawyers that have extensive experience in dealing with protracted litigation against Fortune 500 companies.” One of those firms is Cooper & Kirk, which has gotten more than $2.8 million in legal fees and contracts from the DeSantis administration to defend a controversial social media law, a ban on cruise ship COVID-19 “vaccine passport” requirements, and a restriction on felons seeking to vote. Cooper & Kirk’s lawyers will bill $795 an hour, according to the firm’s engagement letter. The boutique firm’s roster of lawyers includes Adam Laxalt, who roomed with DeSantis when he was training at the Naval Justice School in 2005 and made an unsuccessful bid for U.S. Senate last year in Nevada. The firm’s alumni include Republican U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas. The board also approved bringing on Lawson Huck Gonzalez, a law firm that was launched earlier this year. One of its founders is Alan Lawson, a retired Florida Supreme Court justice. The board approved two local firms as well — Nardella & Nardella and Waugh Grant. Those firms were needed because of the vast legal resources Disney has at its disposal, Garcia said. “What it looks like to me [is that] because Disney has the Magic Kingdom, they thought they could be king for a day,” he said. www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-ne-disney-new-reedy-creek-board-powerless-20230329-qalagcs4wjfe3iwkpzjsz2v4qm-story.html

The irony and hypocrisy of this board members's statement in unbelievable. He is a political appointee, loyal to DeSantis, sits on another board appointed by DeSantis, is the son of the Clearwater mayor and he has donated to Republican campaigns. All of this started because DeSantis retaliated against a private company. Disney dared to speak out against his "Don't Say Gay bill". Previously, DeSantis was happy to take campaign donations from Disney. DeSantis retaliated and fired a Democratic prosecutor who disagreed with him, completely subverting the will of the people. He created a high profile "task force" to crack down on minority voters, arresting them at gun point for voting illegally. All of the cases were dismissed in court, but the damage was already done. Voter suppression and intimidating voters who might vote against you is the very definition of subverting the will of the people and undermines democracy. DeSantis refused to sign plans for redistricting until the state Legislature re-drew the districts from a modest electoral advantage to a significant one.. DeSantis blew up majority black districts, possibly violating Florida the Florida constitution, updated in 2010 to prohibit partisan gerrymandering. DeSantis worked with national GOP leaders and lawyers to draw the districts giving Republicans 4 more seats. DeSantis banned discussions in classrooms, banned books, and orchestrated a hostile takeover of a public university where he appointed a president loyal to him. I could write an entire book on his attacks on the press. Excluding more liberal media from press conferences, passing a law to make it easier to sue news organizations, a proposed law that would require bloggers who write about him to register with the state etc. Disney's actions don't even come close to subverting the will of the people, especially in comparison to DeSantis. DeSantis and his cronies are just mad they were out-maneuvered by Disney. apnews.com/article/disney-world-desantis-florida-theme-park-65ba19dd7af7927b07185f52d0a6e2a7“We’re going to have to deal with it and correct it,” board member Brian Aungst said Wednesday. “It’s a subversion of the will of the voters and the Legislature and the governor. It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern.”www.axios.com/2023/03/07/desantis-disney-special-district-board

Disney is quite brilliant. I think they didn’t make a fuss because they didn’t want to show their hand. Am I correct that the last survivor could be children of William and Harry’s kids, or their grandchildren, or great grandchildren, etc?

Came here after I heard the news, oh how I love this so much! One little win, finally to show that evil little dictator up. He's not as smart and all powerful as he thinks he is.
I can't wait to see the fallout/spin from this. How are the tax payers of FL not up in arms over the screwed up mess he just created for them?

How are the tax payers of FL not up in arms over the screwed up mess he just created for them? It’s Florida. They are some of the dumbest people in this country. They are too stupid to understand what it’s going to cost. I’m sure Faux News did not cover that part.

I moved to Florida from Texas in 2018. I was so excited because I thought I was moving to a purple state that looked like it was going to turn blue. Then Desantis barely won that first governor election and the whole thing became a sh#tshow. I really want to move to a blue state. Except I would miss going to Disneyworld. I have an annual pass and I love visiting the parks!

Am I correct that the last survivor could be children of William and Harry’s kids, or their grandchildren, or great grandchildren, etc? this is what i love about this dance DeSantis and Disney are doing. Disney isn't going around shouting "there is a new sheriff in town". as the old song goes, Disney just quietly shot the sheriff but they did not shoot the deputy. they let the deputy live to warn the others. LOL. i have no doubt that Disney is still working hard to maintain the upper hand in this. they will continue to do it quietly while DeSantis and his cronies stomp their feet and bang their drums. and as far as the King Clause, so long as the royal family keeps having babies, that clause will never kick in. it sure as heck won't kick in during DeSantis's lifetime. Disney is an entity and not an individual. they have all the time and resources to quash other DeSantises (or is the plural Desanti? LoL). There certainly is no Anti-Disney entity (right now) with enough interest and resources to make Disney fold.

I believe the full clause is
"Declaration shall continue in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England, living as of the date of this declaration,"
so it wouldn't extend to future generations. (Right?)

I believe the full clause is "Declaration shall continue in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, King of England, living as of the date of this declaration," so it wouldn't extend to future generations. (Right?) That sounds right. The last survivor of the descendants sounds like future generations to me. www.npr.org/2023/03/30/1167042594/disney-desantis-board-reedy-creek-charlesAnd, in an extra detail that the internet is devouring, the term of the agreement was set using the "Rule Against Perpetuities" — which states that a policy will continue until after a certain person dies.
In this case, the declaration will continue "until twenty one (21) years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III." DeSantis, after all, frequently refers to Walt Disney World as a "corporate kingdom."
Savvy social media users also pointed out that the tactic resembled one that Republicans have used following recent election losses. In places like Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin, GOP-led legislatures overhauled state election laws, shoring up their party power before handing the reins over to incoming Democratic majorities.
In a statement provided to NPR, Disney said the move was "appropriate" and "approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida's Government."
