My goodness.. I have just realized someone I recently got to know, uses baby talk all the time.. I didn't pick up on it until recently and it is a little weary at times. It's like ending all words with an 'ie" at the end.. she even uses it in a professional setting.... I just can't image what the other person thinks sitting across from her. It's not my place to say anything and while I am not around her too much, I can deal with it. But I just cringe when I hear it especially when I hear it on a professional level.

There was a YouTube who used to talk like a baby all of the time. It was gross, especially when she did it while speaking to her husband. One of her YouTube videos made it's way to Tosh.O because it was so cringy. Her name is Jennifer Ross. She's now divorced and has since dropped the baby voice.

My MIL sort of does this. I don't know how to describe it but but she lengthens words by drawing out the vowel or ending sound like you do with preschoolers. She was a elementary teacher, but that was a good 40-50yrs ago ... I think she is having a harder time with the fact that my kids are teens than I am.
She is fully capable of speaking normally and does so when she is not "performing". Not sure how to explain that. 🤷🏻♀️

So gross - definitely not a speech impediment. She still carries on with the "what do they call this" - about every day normal words. There is also no doubt in my mind she uses her baby voice talking to the characters when she's on her bajillion trips to Disney. So, her 5 yo act is not completely gone. LOL |

I'm trying to think of an example... less 'w' (thank goodness).. How about this.. she is helping train me.. so I am sitting there and here something like this: "You go to your spreadsheet sheetie and plop in your amount-montes" It's almost like a rhyming thing. Along with lots of hand gestures and over the top facial gestures. There is NO impediment cause she is able to have a normal conversation, as I have heard her. She is very sweet and I like her.. but the baby talk thing is just something I have to overlook. Everyone else here is awesome though! So friendly and nice.. so if that is my one complaint I will be more than happy to try to ignore it. I have had my share of some odd ones.. which makes me wonder.. maybe I'm the odd ball.. haha.. |

She doesn’t use baby words, but her voice sounds like a 4-year old talking to an adult she wants to please. It is a “cute” voice. So annoying. And she switches back to her regular voice so quickly when talking with us.

And she switches back to her regular voice so quickly when talking with us. There are a few baby words sprinkled in there.. thankfully not a lot of pitch thing. She will sit and explain something to a student and then when you least expect it, this baby talk starts.. a rhyming thing like I mentioned above... 'when you get home and open your spreadsheet-ie and take a looksie at it...' or something similar, I can't explain it. It's just not what you expect coming from a grown woman. Here's one I thought of, just having a morning conversation before getting to work "Yeah Steve gets up early fixes the coffee'ie (extra letters), pets the doggies and gives them their treats and lovin them little selves and drives to his work where his little buddies (voice does go up here) are waiting on him to start his little day" |

Yes my 55 year old cousin still talks baby talk at times. It has driven the whole family nuts. The aunts used to bash her as much as all of us cousins did. She just does not care. Thankfully, I only see her about once a year. My poor sister on the other hand, talks to her quite often.

I wanted my kids to hear the words correctly and not in baby talk. I did use works like "tinkle" - so maybe that is baby talk? But I wanted them to start speaking somewhat correctly. LOL I also dialed back the profanity when my kids were growing up. It's back now, but I really didn't want that to be a part of their everyday speech. That doesn't seem to happen so much anymore. Whew...the mouth on some of these kids! |

I, for sure as a daughter-in-law, would not point it out. LOL When my kids were younger, high school age, I would point some things out as nicely as possible, in the right situations. They all used "like" in their speech heavily. I even find myself doing it too! But I gently pointed it out and had them count and even to count me over-using it. I am even bad about saying "like, you know" frequently in speaking. Some habits are hard to break! |

Most of us adopt a different tone or way of speaking when we are talking to babies or children, just like we probably all have a different phone voice (or as I termed it forever, my “customer” voice) that we use when we are talking to strangers versus people we know.
But using that voice with someone you speak with on a regular basis is weird.

Or, if you're certain there's not some other good reason for it...well, she could just be weird.

No and if I did I couldn't interact with them. I cannot stand baby talk from anyone but babies. My adult kids like to make fun of me for my "NO BABY TALK" rule when they were kids. Ugh - it makes my skin crawl.

Only other moms and it’s usually a very brief thing before they snap out of it. I go to a moms work out class where we bring the kids so it’s a lot of switching back and forth.

I would hope no teacher talks to their students like the examples the OP gives. "Potty" is silly. But typical. Rhyming words to extend a sentence. Not typical. There are lots of euphemisms used by teachers and parents of young students. That habit can be hard to break. Like you said what OP described is weird. OP that would bother me. Like you I wouldn't say anything. But it would be annoying. |

I have a sister in law with whom I am very uncomfortable, due to years of passive aggressive mean girl crap and sneaky cruel behavior. Lucky for me, when she is asking a question that’s somehow double-edged, nosy, or downright sneaky, her voice changes to a little girl, higher octave voice. I’m sure she has no idea she does it, but I love it because as soon as I hear it, I’m on my guard to beware of what she’s up to. When the voice comes out, I usually change the subject because I know she’s looking for something to either pick at or feel superior about. My life has been so much easier ever since I figured this out!
I adore my mother in law and put up with SIL for her. The baby voice just makes things so much easier. I can shut her right down with nobody the wiser.

I've heard women using a really soft, high pitched voice and it drives me crazy. I haven't experienced what the OP is describing, though. I would be really annoyed with that. I can't stand when people say words like "kiddo" repeatedly, let alone rhyming their sentences lol.

I work with k-3 students and have NEVER used baby talk to them. I just think that is wrong. You need to teach them how to speak correctly. I do have a first grader who will mix up his pronouns and use the word "hims." It is kind of funny, but I gently either correct him or just model it correctly in my response so he learns. I watch a YouTuber who uses it and I have to fast forward her. It just hurts my ears.
Now on a dog or overly friendly deer or skunk? That seems like it would be okay. Not sure why talking to animal means I have a different rule.
