I know someone whose grandfather OD'd (didn't die) on a cough medicine with codeine. He took too much and her grandmother found him all strung out - they called an ambulance (thinking he was having a stroke) and the hospital kept asking "do you have any opioids in the house - we think he's overdosed" and they were like "Us? NO! We don't have anything!" He had found it in a medicine cabinet - they'd forgotten it was even there.
So, Narcan would've helped them - but they had no idea what had happened to him. BTW - totally happy ending, he was fine - with Narcan given to him in the ER! And now it's just a funny story they tell.

No, but I should. There is a lot of drug activity in my neighborhood.

Yes, I carry it in my purse and have one at home. I’m a teacher on the farthest edge of campus from the nurse. I hope not to need it but would feel horrible if someone died and I could have done something.
DH had a kid od at school and they had narcan. He teaches middle school, the kid was 12.

Never heard of Narcan before. Our protocol in our HS if someone seems ill in class is to call the nurse or security, not to give any student anything.

I don't even know what that is? Presumably you've googled by now...? You're very lucky that you live somewhere with zero drug problems.

What drug does Narcan revive from an OD? I too thought it was like oxy or heroin or something illegal. Posters above are saying they may carry it bc they have an rx for certain drugs? I will try to find some online training for sure! Any opiate. Prescription or illicit. My daughter was given fentanyl post surgery for a couple of her surgeries and was sent home with either Vicodin or oxycodone depending on the surgery. We were never given narcan though and her last surgery was just a few months ago. One of the big issues right now on the illicit side of things is meth is almost always laced with fentanyl in my area right now. And dealers/distributors of illicit drugs are pressing their own pills. None of these people are rocket scientists and so it’s impossible to know what’s actually in the pills even if someone thinks they are just buying an oxy or Vicodin. Or thinks they’re fine bc they bought fro. The same dealer a couple days ago.

To anyone now considering carrying Narcan, please don’t leave it in your car. First of all, it’s not useful there if needed in an emergency (which is when it would be used), and two because it gets too hot in parked cars. Carry it in your bag. It’s not big.

Not at home.
However, I am trained and keep it in my desk at work. Most everyone is trained and has ready access at work.

No because my pharmacist told me not to. He gave me several reasons and I believed him. Now I am not sure but I don’t carry it on me. Honestly, I feel like your pharmacist was misinformed. Narcan is totally safe, it does not need a prescription like regular medication, it's handed out to anyone who is old enough to understand how to stick it up someone's nose... My county has drug information sessions for anyone who is interested, and they hand out Narcan at the end of them. etc. Unless perhaps Canada does not have the Good Samaritan laws that the USA has? Although again, Narcan isn't like say doing CPR on someone and breaking a few ribs, where someone might try to sue (although Good Samaritan covers them also) -- Narcan has absolutely zero effects on anyone who does not have opioids in their body. So I don't know why a pharmacist would be discouraging someone from carrying it. Canada has a Good Samaritan law. I honestly can't think of a reason any pharmacist would not want someone to have Narcan available. I don't have any in my home but I live in a city where emergency responders carry it and are always close by.

I don’t have it at home, but after supporting an OD situation at work a few weeks ago, I feel like carrying it everywhere I go. Someone has their 16 year old at home with them today because we had Narcan at work. Never heard of Narcan before. Our protocol in our HS if someone seems ill in class is to call the nurse or security, not to give any student anything. If you work with HS students, you should know what it is, how to spot when it’s needed, and know who has it. In our HS teachers are not Narcan certified but in this day and age you should at least know what an opioid OD looks like.

We don't have it at the house.
With that said, it was apparently on my approved meds list when I went to the ER in October. I asked nurse why. (The 'hardest' med I take is Benadryl.) She said it was just standard procedure when someone comes in with breathing issues. I had noticed it on the other ER trip notes so I don't know if it changed between June and October.

The VA sent some several years ago, so yes. It might be expired now. I should check.
