Upcoming RV camping trip with 6 people and I’ll have a night to do dinner. Going the easy route and doing “build your own taco salad”. I think I have all the ingredients down, but I’m wondering about dressing….? What kind would go well with taco salad (needs to be store bought, please!). Also, what type of lettuce do you like for taco salad?
Also, doing chips and salsa as an app 😋

I mix sour cream and salsa together for dressing. I know people who use Italian dressing and people who use French dressing. There is Chipotle ranch out there, too.
For lettuce, I like head lettuce.
I dont trust romaine after all of the various e-coli outbreaks tied to romaine. It also doesnt have the crunch that I like in a taco salad.

French dressing is good. I often just use taco sauce as my dressing.

For dressing I use salsa. Specifically, Herdez Salsa Verde (meduim). DH uses Spicy Ranch.
For lettuce, usually romaine. But whatever we have on hand.
We have Taco Salads frequently.

I just use salsa for dressing when I make taco salad. I typically use romaine - mostly as we usually have it on hand than any particular reason.

Salsa or taco sauce, romaine lettuce, and include black beans, corn, avocado for people to add as they like, pre-shredded cheese (Mexican blend if you can find it) and sour cream to top it all off. Also have some plain tortilla strips or chips for people to add to the salad. French dressing has no business being anywhere near a taco salad!

No dressing, that’s just weird. Salsa or taco sauce would be better options.

I think that Ken's makes an avocado ranch. That would be tasty.
(I'm also super hungry right now, so ignore the drooling going on over here.)

Another that uses salsa/taco sauce, sour cream, and sometimes some guacamole.
I do like the salads made with Doritos and Catalina dressing, so Catalina might be an option if you want to include a premade dressing.
Lettuce doesn’t matter but probably romaine or iceberg (I like the crunch of iceberg) or a mixture.

I like my homemade ranch (egg free mayo) and a little medium spice leve salsa as my dressing.
For Lettuce, I like to mix romaine and iceberg.
Once in awhile I add in purple cabbage I shredded.

This would be like the Chipotle salad dressing and would be a good option, but as others said, I don't usually buy dressing for my taco salad. Also, I often just buy coleslaw mix or arugula because when I make taco "salad" it is taco nachos or soft shell tacos too because my kids don't use salad as their bed (chips or make tacos), so I buy something that we will eat in another way so it doesn't go to waste. I like arugula when I add chips for crunch (and I eat Arugula in other ways). Otherwise, I will buy the coleslaw mix if I am trying to eat healthier and avoiding chips and want crunch (and then make coleslaw the next day or soon after)

We use Wish Bone Western dressing. It is a type of French Western Dressing dressing, but better. Light or regular, the fat free isn't as good. We just use salad in a bag for the lettuce.

Black beans from a can, shredded cheddar or Colby, lightly crushed Doritos, and Dorothy Lynch dressing for sure! (French if you can't get Dorothy)

I’m another one that just mixes sour cream and salsa for dressing. There’s also a salsa ranch dressing I can get in the produce department at the grocery store that works (refrigerated, maybe the brand is Bob’s? I don’t really remember). If you must have dressing and don’t want to go to much trouble, I think ranch would be fine and fairly universally liked. People can add salsa if they want to.
I use romaine lettuce, but iceberg is super popular, too.
Don’t forget to have extra tortilla chips to break up and add to the salad.

For a great bottled dressing look for Bolthouse Farms Cilantro Avocado. It's made of yogurt and it's freaking delicious like Ranch. It needs to be refrigerated if that matters. You'll find it in the produce section with the refrigerated bottled dressings.
They have that one and a Salsa Ranch that's really good too. It varies depending on the grocery store you shop at. Most bigger, well stocked stores carry more variety. And grab from the back to make sure you don't get one that's expiring soon.

At least they both start with a B.

I don’t make it often. Opt for tacos instead. When I do, I use Italian, because that’s what we’ve always used. I do appreciate the other suggestions.

Black beans from a can, shredded cheddar or Colby, lightly crushed Doritos, and Dorothy Lynch dressing for sure! (French if you can't get Dorothy) I used to go to Nebraska with my ex fiancé often to see his mother. We would take her to dinner at her favorite place and she always asked for this dressing. It isn’t sold on the west coast. Well, at least I’ve never seen it on the west coast. I would hear people at other tables in the restaurant asking for it as well. If I had been eating a salad, I would have ordered it to see what the big deal was. When I asked his mom, she said it was the only dressing she ever ate. Then when we were in Colorado visiting my ex’s friends on the way home from a Nebraska trip, we went to dinner and they all asked for this dressing on their salads as well! What it it about this dressing? What is in it that makes it so popular? I had intended to buy some to take home to try it, but forgot. I’m still curious about it though. ETA: I just googled it and went to their website. The base for this dressing is tomato soup! What the ever loving heck? Apparently Dorothy made up the recipe herself and served it at the restaurant that she and her husband owned. Word spread from there and people would come just for the salad dressing. And apparently people have come up with multiple recipes for it. One on their website was for pizza using the dressing mixed with tomato sauce for the base, then dipping the cooked pizza into more dressing! That stuff must be good.

Yeah, Dorothy Lynch is amazing! And yes, we use it for everything around here, kinda like Ranch! Ha! Which amazingly started in Nebraska as well! We like our salad dressings I guess!

Iceberg lettuce, with other fixins, Catalina dressing and crunched up Fritos.
Dorothy Lynch is a fave in our house. Oddly enough, I've never seen it offered in any local restaurant.

Catalina or something like the avocado ranch others have mentioned. And neither one of those are dressings I would pick for a regular salad, but they work in taco salads for some reason.

My mom and I both use thousand island dressing and nacho cheese Doritos. We frequently take it to gatherings and we never bring home leftovers.
