OK I will. Tips; this is just getting out of hand. I went to a coffee shop where I stand in a line to order drip coffee and a muffin, then stand in line to pick it up and go find a table, consume my order, and bus my table. Does this rate a tip? I normally tip 20% or so in a restaurant. They seat me, take my order, bring my meal, check to see if everything is OK, do my transaction at the table, and I leave... and they bus the table I don't tip the grocery store, but the donut shop asks for a tip. Barber shops seem to need a tip, repair people expect a tip. I even saw a tip jar in the auto parts store. Should there not be some kind of line as to who gets a tip?
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
"What's going on?"

Tipping is sooo out of hand. They have tip jars at the fast food drive throughs. 😂😂

First I have always liked that song partially because I am very impressed by the use of the word peculiar in song lyrics.
Second, I am totally with you on the tips. I ordered at a bakery counter yesterday, she handed me the item and I put it in my (reusable) bag, paid at the terminal and the screen asking me how much I want to tip popped up. This bakery has no eat-in option, not even standing room. They hand you an item over the counter and somehow they think this warrants a tip.
I believe we have lost the meaning of the word tip.

Rant away. I hate the whole concept of tipping. Businesses need to pay their people appropriately.
I do tip 20%+ at restaurants/deliveries, and my hair dresser and nail tech, but the thought of tipping (which I do NOT) at any type of fast food/coffee joint makes my blood boil. The only reason I tip at our frequented coffee shop is because there is no indoor area. They walk outside, even in inclement weather to take orders. They deserve it. Standing at a register does not a tip make.
I’m sure many peaple here will argue and be upset that I don’t tip those, but I don’t, and won’t.

The frozen yogurt place where you do everything yourself, except weigh the items. The tip is on the screen when you go to pay, but you can skip it.
The bowling alley also wanted a tip recently...
It's is kind of crazy.

I have stopped going to a lot of places because of the expectation of a tip. It's ridiculous. Panera comes to mind. No one is waiting on me. I order, I pay, I get my own drink, I pick up my food. I bus my own table. It's stupid and I refuse to participate. I eat a lot more at home these days.

I think the concept of tipping has changed. It used to be that you left a tip for "services rendered". So for taking my order, giving me drinks, etc., I was going to tip you for how "good" you did your job.
I think of the tip now as just a service charge. It's the same thing as sales tax. You want the coffee and muffin, you pay the price. If it's the price of the item, tax or tip it's just all components of the actual cost of the goods.

It is absurd and it is really unfair who society thinks should have a tip and who should not.
And the one place I wanted to tip - or gift - were my Mother's caregivers but there was a specific rule against giving anything to the staff of her assisted living facility. I can understand why they would not want you to single people out but I really wanted to thank some of them individually with a gift but was not allowed to. Plus many of the aides make such poor wages. If there were ever people who do a very personal service for low wages, it is a nursing home/assisted living facility CNA.

I will join your rant, Don. I went out to dinner at a fairly nice restaurant with my MeetUp group. When getting the check there was a 20% "service fee" which did not include the tip. So you are telling me that in addition to my $$$ dinner I am expected to pay an additional 35-40%? (tip + service fee) Not going to happen. We spoke to management and they explained that the cost of health insurance was included in that service fee. My feeling is that employee benefits are on the employer. If they want to be seen as a benevolent employer, they need to pay employees a fair wage and increase prices if needed. Don't tack on some ridiculous extra charge. I mean who in there right mind would pay 35-40% over their bill?

We went to a small, neighborhood butcher shop a couple of weekends ago. The kind with the glass case where you pick out the items you want, they wrap and price it and you go to the register up front. There was a tip jar at the meat counter AND at the checkout counter. Went to a 2nd butcher shop and wouldn’t you know - same thing.
In retail stores where I have no choice - they have to take it from the case and wrap it, I can’t - it ticks me off. And the checkout clerk. Isn’t that what she’s getting paid to do? She rings up our 4 items and puts it in a sack. We pay with an ATM card, so she doesn’t even handle money or make change. Twenty percent on top of today’s food prices is a bit much for my budget.
I like to shop local, but we are starting to buy more and more of our meat at Costco. I bring it home and divide it up into packages and vacuum seal it myself. It ends up being cheaper even with the cost of the vacuum seal bags.

Dominos pick up, in store has a place for adding a tip. Um, no. I live less than a mile away. I drove here to avoid a delivery fee.

I used to play that song on repeat in high school and now you've planted an ear worm.
I hate tipping. I will to tip at restaurants, especially those that are full service. Any place where I order at a counter, collect it, and clean up after myself do not get a tip.
I will admit I hate tipping hair stylists, cleaners, anyone in the service industry, especially those who are independent. I assume you're charging that rate because you are worth that rate. If you need tips to survive, then increase your rates. Or go work where you can charge a rate of your choosing.
I pay the woman who comes in every other week her rate for the 4 rooms she cleans. She does not charge extra if I ask her to clean a 5th room (usually DH's office) but I will give her more because she did more.

I was with her, when her sweet German mother who lived through WWII and the Russian invasion passed away.
I would see if there was a way you could bring treats for the entire staff that day. Doughnuts or cookies? Take an order for drinks and bring them in? Caffeine is always good. I don't know how big the facility is, but maybe a way for the staff that works with your mother on that floor?

I'm a very generous tipper, but this is way out of hand. Tipping at an auto parts store? NO WAY! I don't tip everywhere I see a tip jar. I'm not going to tip you for taking a muffin out of the case and handing to me. I will tip you well if you're a good server and I'm eating my muffin at a sit down restaurant. You go DON!

I wish restaurants and other places paid workers living wages. However, since they don't, I consider a tip part of the cost. Admittedly, pre-covid, I didn't tip for take-out, but I do now. I understand why, but I wish places with Square or similar apps instead of cash registers didn't automatically have a tip page.

Tipping is completely out of control and needs to go away. I do not tip for takeout or anywhere that I go to a counter and order. I tip in sit down restaurants, which is where the tipped worker wage is paid. I think the fact that we let servers tell us that we needed to tip 18-20% is ridiculous. 15% was fine. When restaurant prices go up, servers get paid more. No one else gets a raise when prices increase.
It is insane. We need to do away with it and restaurants can pay a reasonable wage.

don I TOTALLY agree! I don't tip unless I am at a sit down restaurant. If all someone is doing is taking my order and then I have to find a table and get my stuff myself and all that, NO tip. It's ridiculous what the service industry considers "tip worthy" And the service I DO get places I tip? OMG! I never tip less than 20% unless service is bad. And by good service- I mean, get my order right, fill my WATER at least once or at least ASK, and bring me back my change without asking "Do you need change?" I don't think those things are out of the norm for extra on top of the amount I am ALREADY paying for a meal I could probably make at home for 1/4 the price. We no longer go out to eat because prices have gotten ridiculous. Fast food used to be "affordable" but it no longer is. Seriously- you're going to charge me almost $10 for a McDonalds burger (nothing special- plain burger), fries, and a soda? Nope.

I was tipping "too much" during covid--picking up a pizza, etc. But my "rule" is now, if I have to bus my own table, no tip. Went through a drive through recently for ice cream-like a $3.00 ice cream and there was the tip section on the screen-nope, no tip. Unfortunately I feel a little weird/ashamed(?) for not doing it in places like that but it really has gotten out of hand.
I'm going to Europe soon and really have to pull in the reins on tipping, often you just add a few euros not 20%. Several years ago we were in Japan, had a 1/2 day private tour which was pretty expensive and we tipped 20% because it was really good; our tour guide was so surprised and thankful; she was great and deserved it.

I don't like being asked if I want to round up or give my change to whatever charity the fast food restaurant is supporting.
If and when I give to a charity, it's of my own choosing.....not a charity of someone else's choosing.

I don't feel any guilt when I don't tip at a drive through or somewhere like that. It hasn't gotten as bad in my community in that it's still only restaurants & coffee shops. Haven't seen it at bakery, butcher, place where I take my car in. I would be really annoyed if they wanted a tip for doing my oil change. They charge me enough for labour.

Most of the big chain drive-through places here don't have tip jars, the exception being Starbucks. It is the smaller, independent places (bakeries, eateries) that seem to have tip jars. I don't tip if I have to stand around and wait for my order. I haven't seen tip jars at the butcher counter.
Our Panera seems to be the exception from most places that I read on here. The Paneras in my area (and all the ones I've been to in So. Cal.) will bring the food to your table, and they also clean up. They used to have a sign on the number card that said "No Tipping". I have noticed that the "No Tipping" memo is now gone. But I always felt bad about not tipping there because they did serve you. I haven't been to Panera in awhile though because the prices have gone up and portions have gotten really small.

I'm not going to tip you for taking a muffin out of the case and handing to me. I will tip you well if you're a good server and I'm eating my muffin at a sit down restaurant. You go DON! I did tip this week at an auto parts store....BUT...here's the reason why. I needed two new headlight bulbs. Cost of the bulbs and installation at a shop down the way was $100. But the auto parts store sold me the headlights for $40 and the employee installed them on a very cold and windy day for free. He provided customer service with a smile and saved me $60, so I tipped him $10, and I did so happily. I might also add that doing business with this company was a pleasure from my first phone call to inquire about the price -- conversely, their competitors sounded as though they couldn't help me (and couldn't be bothered). Now, if I were simply purchasing parts and no real service was provided, definitely not tipping.

I don't go anywhere / use any service where tipping is expected, and I'm not going to tip in places where it isn't. Employers should pay a fair wage, not rely on the guilt/generosity of patrons to support their employees.
If I had a magic wand and could change how tipping worked, I'd make it that everyone gets generously paid and tips are only given in situations like Legacy Girl's, where an employee goes above and beyond to help. That's tip worthy. Just doing a normal job should give a dependable paycheck where your livelihood is not at the whims of individual customer's moods.

Aussie pea here - the idea of tipping at all, and therefore mandatory tipping or service charges that are so large (30-40% ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!) - is SO WEIRD! In Australia everyone has a country wide mandated minimum wage (unless you are being paid cash/illegally) and all employers who have workers that work over a certain number of hours/full time workers HAVE to pay superannuation for that worker as a part of their wage for their retirement. I even had super payments made into an account when I worked at McDonald’s!
It’s just so abhorrent to me that people rely on tips rather than a living wage to pay their bills and survive!
And yes, if we receive amazing service (usually/pretty much only at a restaurant) we will sometimes tip. Sometimes. But very rarely. Cafes etc usually have a tip jar but that’s usually reserved for people who put in their spare change rather than having to carry it around, and those are decreasingly used as more people pay electronically.
And don’t get me started on showing prices on a menu/item that don’t include all the taxes… that blew my mind when I was trying to pay for food at Disneyland. Here of an item is $5 you pay $5 for it (all taxes included in the price).
