Do you think the statue of David is “pornographic”? Do you think anyone should have been forced to resign because an art teacher had an art lesson involving a picture of the statue of David to her class of six graders?

This is the America Republicans envision for us. Afraid of great works of art and anything that makes us think.

I have seen David in Florence - unlike, I bet, those who complained- and it is just gorgeous and absolutely NOT pornographic. I spent ages looking at this statue and it wasn’t what I guess these parents are objecting to that claimed my attention. There is also a replica of this statue in a public square in Florence and people just walk past it, and no one is blushing or covering their children’s eyes. Nudity is not the same thing as pornography!

Nudity is not the same thing as pornography! Indeed. They don't understand the definition of pornography.

So I did a little digging about this and found this article from the Slate that is an interview with the School Board Chair. He is claiming the principal was forced out for other things besides an art class involving the statue of David. But in reading the article, well it’s worth a read.

Yeah, I don’t find anything that relieves my concerns in that article. I guess I can be glad that Texas is not quite - yet - Florida.

There are naked statues in practically every public square in some of the cities!

I recently went to an art teacher continuing education day at several museums in Dallas (put on my SMU and Region 10). Several school districts in Texas have adopted a no nudes in art policy. Students cannot see or study any artwork with nudity. If students take a field trip to a museum, the teacher must provide a written plan to navigate the museum without viewing any nude artwork.
The Nasher Sculpture Center was offering to turn Picasso sculptures around to face the wall on field trip days.
The teachers were talking about how they can no longer teach David or the Venus de Milo or lots of other pieces that used to be in their curriculum.

So, so Taliban-y. I guess we're lucky it belongs to another country or the Republicans would go blow it up to keep women and children from being tainted by its existence.

No offense to trained teachers but we’ve seen who Florida is employing as teachers and it’s no surprise that they do not consider these people to be expert educators.
I’d home school before I would send my kids to public school in FL even if it meant we would only eat beans and rice. I mean poor people have standards too

Good God. Genitals by themselves aren't pornographic. If they were I'd be practically in the industry 🤣
Saw 3 butts, one anus, two penises, one vulva, and six breasts last night alone. It wasn't at all titillating.
BUT if I was teaching sixth graders I would definitely add like a fig leaf or something over his peen just to help stifle the giggles and let them focus on the lesson and not have to hear from the principal that Ms Christianmom's little Remington was very upset that I showed him a man's private parts.

Totally agree with Zee. 6th graders can be very immature, and covering the private parts would focus the kids attention on the art and not the genitals.

No, and I'm a prude. As a naive 6th grade girl I would have been embarrassed if there were boys in my class when that was projected onto the whiteboard though. When I was ten we went to the art museum as a family and there was a life sized very naked male sculpture, that was fun to look at with my dad standing right there

People who see porn in art or classic/harmless books ARE the perverts. Normal mentally healthy people do not see sexual perversion in everything they view. The real perverts are the ones causing these stinks over nothing. They are obsessed with sex, therefore they are the perverted people.

If kids aren't able to be taught sex ed until an older age, if at all, then I guess this would be inappropriate, not pornographic. Not agreeing, just saying. Celebrities have their hoochies and coochies hanging out and sing x-rated songs but a work of art should be banned. Mmm kay.

Yes, it’s definitely not a statewide thing, just district by district. The teachers in the districts that don’t have that policy were shocked and appalled by what the teachers from the districts that do have that policy were saying. There were representatives from the big museums in Dallas letting teachers know how the museum is responding to the policy. The Nasher is willing to move works of art on field trip days. The Dallas Museum of Art will not move any artworks, but did have maps for teachers with all of the nude works marked on the map and would work with them on a route that would meet the requirements. The Meadows Museum needed to get clarification from the district on babies and cherubs in religious art because their collection focuses on Spanish Art, so there’s a huge Catholic influence.

This country has such an odd fixation on nudity. There is nothing wrong with the human body. I have been taking my kids to art museums since they were babies. They never point and/or giggle at the nude art pieces. I would much rather have a young person see the beautiful work of art that includes nudity than violence. If only this country placed more importance in keeping children safe from guns than they do stupid things like seeing nudity in art work that can't hurt them.

Some pundit made a crack about statues without pants. ☺️ Three parents complained about it. They must have done their own research. 🥴
