I'm going on a three-hour flight tomorrow. I generally don't do well on planes; the last time I flew, I got a prescription for Xanax from my GYN and that helped immensely. This time around, I have been so busy that I forgot to call my doctor and see if he would prescribe me a few Xanax again. What things can I do to get me through it? I'll have a book, and I'm hoping that the Serial Podcast is available early enough so I'll have that to listen to, but is there anything else? We're supposed to fly out at 10:30 a.m., so that's a little early to start drinking lol.

A bloody mary is perfectly acceptable to drink at 1030 am, as is a mimosa I also hate flying, but I have plenty of Ativan from previous flights that I'm usually good. Last time I flew it was only an hour flight so I did it sans drugs. I played game boy games with my dd while I had a bloody mary...it was a 630 am flight.

I always just put my headphones in and listen to music or read a magazine. Since you can't get a prescription, maybe a Benadryl will help. Hopefully others have some better suggestions.

Take a couple of Benadryl. They will help you calm down, if not help you fall asleep.
I have never been nervous about flying, even when I had to take a very small plane from Hamilton to Ottawa and then there were 3 attempts at landing. Just doesn't bother me. Sending you good vibes for a safe flight.
Where are you going?

Benadryl or anti-nausea medication will make you sleepy which will help a lot. Music or videos to take your mind off flying - better than books as they wake you up and activate your brain and you want to be numb. Deep breathing exercises regularly before you even board and throughout. I hate flying and have to fly for work every 3 weeks :-(

You can now use small portables (like an Ipod or phone on airplane mode) the whole flight....so after the emergency procedure speech, I would tuck some headphones in and have happy music playing. So that might help!
Good luck!

I agree with headphones. Having personalized music choices always improves both flying and waiting in the airport. I actually hate waiting more than flying.

I'm not great on planes, either. I don't like to take anything beforehand or drink while flying (somehow it always makes me feel worse), so I do what a few other people have mentioned and put on some headphones and zone out. Music, tv, podcasts, etc.
This is the NYC trip, right? Have a fantastic time! I predict you'll absolutely love the city.

Pharma GABA helps with anxiety, although I'm not sure that less than 24 hours is enough time for it to work. Check your vitamin and natural food stores. At least if you start taking it now, it should help take the edge off your return flight.

I am terrified of flying, so I understand! But my husband used to travel a lot for work and I have friends whose husbands fly every week. None have ever had any issues flying, but they have all had car accidents at one time or another. They always say your biggest risk is the drive to the airport, not your flight. My mil is a worrier, and she never worries about her son flying!
Thinking of you!
