I have a stamp that would be MUCH easier to use if it came in two pieces, especially for mass production. Has anyone ever chopped a red rubber cling stamp apart the way lots of people do with clear stamps? I think the stars would be pretty easy to cut away from the stripes with a knife. Using a stamp platform I think it would work to stamp one part then nestle the other part in and remove the first. This is the stamp: Stamp question by jo.blackford, on Flickr

I have done it. I cut balloons off of a car. Its harder to cut red rubber, but doable. For mine I used tim holtz scissor. You have a straight line so I would use a xacto knife and a metal ruler to make the cut slowly. Good luck!

FWIW Jennifer McGuire recommends masking instead of surgery for rubber stamps.

I'm in the NEVER cut a stamp camp and get palpitations just thinking about it. However, with the flag stamp in your picture, I would totally do surgery on it. You could mask but that just seems like more work. If you get an exacto knife with a brand new blade and go very slow, I think it would be pretty easy to cut. ETA: After surgery when stamping, I would attach both pieces to a stamp tool to align them then remove one piece, stamp, put the piece back, check alignment, remove the other piece and stamp again. Just to help get the final stamped image correctly spaced.

I’ve done it. No regrets. I just used extremely sharp detail scissors and cut very slowly and carefully. If you are adept at using a craft knife (unlike me), that works, too.
I would totally separate the parts of the stamp that need different colors.

I have no qualms about taking scissors to stamps. I say go for it!

Thanks for the encouragement, especially from a never-cut proponent! I'm going to try masking one more time... But I think I'll end up cutting it. Worst case scenarios - the stamp doesn't line up quite as well afterwards but the kids who get these postcards probably won't notice and definitely won't care, OR I make a big mess of it, it gets thrown in the bin and I decide whether it's worth spending the money again. I think reduced aggravation might be worth the money. Or I reduce the aggravation 100% by giving up on the stamp if I ruin it! We'll see. I got influenced by this artist even knowing I wouldn't put this much effort into the cards and I have to leave them without sentiments for this particular charity. http://instagram.com/p/Cfl4SanAUO-

I think the vast majority of Veterans would have a problem with that flag image, as we believe "These colors don't run."
