So I added the items to my cart at SB.com and it would be $7.99 to ship. I have bought from a Canadian store before and it was a big order and my shipping was flat rate of $13. I just went to the same store and it is now $14 flat rate. So the $29-37 for shipping is way off. I hope they aren't raising shipping to make money like E-bay and Etsy sellers do. I have shipped some things that I sold through Facebook Marketplace, and unfortunately we don't seem to have great flat rate shipping options here in Canada. There isn't really a box that would fit scrapbook paper, and those that might seem to be over $30. I think lots of stores that do online orders cover the extra shipping cost. It's something I am really grateful for and tend to only shop where I can get free or flat rate shipping. I am usually willing to put extra items in my cart (such a burden!) so that I make the free shipping. It's an extra cost for the retailers, but it is definitely something that keeps me coming back. I really hope she can make a go of it, and I can certainly understand that her margins might not be where she can discount the shipping. Hopefully there is a local demand for the kits in her area. That would definitely help to keep shipping costs down. Yes you are correct infochick, I believe retailers are eating the shipping cost typically not the other way around. I am pretty sure the scrapbook size boxes are typically around 25-30 to ship anywhere even in the same province. I shop from a canadian store that ships for free for orders above 150 cad. She will let you buy smaller orders too and save them up until you get to 150. When I buy from scrapbook.com I am always charged Duty to the tune of 25 dollars minimum on a 100 dollar order. Just picked up my INSD order yesterday that I got dinged 28 dollars for, ouch!

Customs is your HST (mine is 13%) plus a flat fee of 9.95 from Canada Post for handling the box through customs. So on a $100USD box, that would be $135 cdn, x .13 = 17.40 ish, plus 9.95 = 28.40. I just got a box from sb.com - $71.54 USD. $11.99 shipping. Did not get caught in customs. The shipping charge is about what HST would be. And because I ordered on a 10% coupon day, I really did save money buying from the US this time. I find that $75-80 is the limit where my boxes get caught. NEVER NEVER NEVER let a company send you something by UPS. Their "brokerage fee" is $40 (compared to Canada post $9.95)

I like the kit - I think it is well designed and it shows that she put a lot of thought into it. She has valuable firsthand knowledge of what makes a good kit and I think her kits are going to reflect that. I would have been tempted if the embellishment kit had not sold out.
I know this may sound judgy, but making spelling errors on your website when you're trying to sell something is a huge turnoff for me. Mainly because it's a reflection of your habits and direct evidence that you're not taking things all that seriously.(The main kit description has a spelling error in it.) I know everyone makes spelling mistakes but if you can't read something over to check it after you've written it or ask someone to proofread it for you when you're in business, it says to me that you're not going to be careful about other things and that's a red flag for me.
The pictures of the main kit don't show the b sides of the paper and I can't see what's in the embellishment packs. Isn't that kind of important? I know she shows them extensively in the video but if you don't know the video exists, 3 pictures is not all that enticing IMO.
The high cost of shipping issue - there are numerous ways to ship things from Canada to the US, including companies that will take your packages to the border and mail them through the USPS for you. I wonder if she researched shipping options well or whether those companies have increased their prices since fuel has increased in price.
Anyhow, I hope she does well and I look forward to seeing future kits and what she makes with them.

The kit was really cute, but I can essentially go out and buy the same product for less. It might have been more tempting if there were exclusive items, but the math just doesn't add up. I do hope she finds her niche though. My first thought is that if she's not offering anything you can't buy yourself she would do better to do something like Shimelle's Best of Both Worlds kit - creating a shopping list of what she's going to demo and encouraging people to buy locally or from a shop where she gets an affiliate kickback. If I remember correctly she's not even in a central part of Canada, isn't she in Nova Scotia? so shipping cost is always going to be a huge problem. Shipping the product to her to build the kits is going to add to the cost too. It doesn't seem to make economic sense to me, unless I'm missing something. I like her and I hope I'm wrong and she finds a market.

This is a really good idea. I had no idea shipping would be so expensive for Canadians. I had thought she'd mostly have a Canadian market, with some US orders thrown in. The shipping is going to be tough to overcome, even for Canadian scrappers. I really want her to be successful too. It it nice to see something opening instead of closing. Fingers crossed she succeeds.

USPS doesn't charge me duties the majority of the time, but UPS always charges duties, too.

the kit is really well done but not something i can’t get on my own for much less. international shipping is out of the question for me. i shop at ACOT — their shipping can’t be beat.
with so many kit subs failing (felicity jane, clique kits) i’m surprised to see a new one in the market with items easily accessible in other sites.
i’m her next kit will be items not found at joann’s.
i hope she finds her niche and is successful.
