I suppose it’s inevitable that a creative industry would spawn a lot of creative marketing gimmicks and practices. Paper crafting certainly has: frequent new releases, clubs/subscriptions, “free” gifts with purchase, sales, coupons, various minimums for free shipping, flat rate vs actual cost shipping, cross-company collaborations, MLMs, oh my! And those are just what I can think of right now and only partially caffeinated.
Which ones get up your nose and turn you off? Which ones suck you in in spite of yourself? Are there any you really appreciate and seek out? How do you navigate balancing your own economic interests with those of companies you want to support?

I personally despise paying for shipping, but I realize that shipping costs have skyrocketed lately, making free shipping harder to find with minimum orders for it rising. I will often shop around and perform strange arithmetic gymnastics to minimize total costs. For instance, if I really only need one thing, I would look into not just prices at various sites that carry, minimum order amount for free shipping, and also who offers flat rate vs actual when you fall short. Michael’s ($50) and OfficeSupply.con ($35!) have low minimums, so I can usually get to threshold without feeling like I’m loading up on junk, although I might start running out of space to store spare adhesive. But when free shipping fails, I next consider the size and weight of the item(s) — one die set? Look for a seller who passes along the actual cost. Die cutting machine, reams of paper, 12x12? Find flat rate. And as much as I want to support small brands and understand that purchasing from them directly is better for them, I often prefer to buy from someone like SSS or ACOT to aggregate items of different brands.

Considering the oversized arsenal of tools and supplies in my craft room, I feel that I have done my part to support many companies. I don’t owe anything to any of them. Do I want them to stay in business? Definitely! But that does not mean I need to feel pressured to keep buying, buying, buying from them all the time.
However…….I do have a weakness for certain companies, and I often have difficulty resisting the urge to buy their newest offerings, even though I don’t need to add anything more to my stash.
I have learned that stencils are not really my thing. Until I start using the few that I’ve got, I’m not buying anymore. Besides, I can make stencils with my electronic cutters.
I have gotten a lot pickier about what stamps I buy, mostly because I have so many stamps that I just can’t justify buying more. I have them well organized and can find what I want very quickly. Since I can make matching stencils if I want, there is less temptation to buy some of the new stamp and stencil sets. I rarely buy stamps anymore. I also have the Brother ScanNCut, so matching dies aren’t necessarily a temptation on the rare occasions that I do buy stamps.
Dies are my main weakness, even though I have electronic cutters. I prefer the edges that you get with dies, as well as the stitch lines. They just look nicer than what the machines can cut. I’m getting pickier when it comes to dies, too, though, even when it comes to my favorite companies.
However, when I do buy, the gimmicks that can get me to buy more are the free shipping, the sales, and new monthly releases from my favorite companies. I think harder about what I buy, and sometimes I can manage to stay strong and not buy anything, but the sales and new monthly releases usually get me to look, and if I want something, then I often will spend more to get that free shipping. When I couldn’t find enough for free shipping, I have been known to empty my cart. It sounds stupid when I analyze it, but it’s happened enough that I know that free shipping is a big deal for me.

I'm always up for a good sale and I don't like paying shipping charges. So if the sale discount equals or is close to the shipping cost them I'm in.
One other thing I noticed yesterday while shopping at MFT is when checking out there was something added called "Navidium Shipping Protection" at $0.75 per item. Hmmm. I couldn't find anything on their shipping page about it. I backed out and deleted my cart. I dis-like sneaky fees!
ETA: Update to the MFT fee. I just received a response to my question asking what the fee was. It's NOT per item and you can toggle it off. It still irks me that it was on there automatically.
Quote:
Thanks so much for reaching out. This is a new offer, shipping protection on the order against damage, loss, or theft. It's not required and can be removed at checkout, there's a little on/off toggle.
This is not per item but is based on the order total and charged once, it's about 2% of the product total.

Trying to get that off your order is a pain. I was not happy about that when trying to checkout last time.

This is essentially the reply I received from C+9th when I asked about their fee (about a month ago). It was the first time I had ever seen anything like it. I honestly think it’s an awful practice. The retailer is attempting to shift responsibility for their packaging and how their chosen delivery company handles the goods to us. No thank you. I’ll use my CC to recoup losses if the retailer refuses to cover it. They can then recoup from the retailer.

My #1 pet peeve is bad infrastructure. If your website crashes every time you release new product, that is a huge turnoff. (I'm looking at you PTI in the olden days.). This also happens at Gina K and Concord & 9th's website crashed when they released their new colors. I love the Stamp Markets products but trying to find stuff on their website is next to impossible. If you don't know the exact name of a set, you are screwed. I tried searching for "butterfly" and half the butterfly products would not come up. And for the love of all, give me sort options. Next is free shipping. I HATE paying for shipping especially when I'm ordering more than $50 worth of products. I know shipping costs have skyrocketed but as a consumer, to me that is throwing away money I would spend on product if your shipping was free. Hence my problem of buying $40 worth of product just to save $8 on shipping! Also, if you can't have flat shipping rates for stamps and dies that's a problem. There is so much I want to purchase from The Ton but their shipping is outrageous and they NEVER have free shipping codes. I'm not a huge fan of "exclusive" products mainly because the more people who have the products, the more ideas I can find on google & Pinterest. I've said before, I'm not great at coming up with my own designs, but I can copy the heck out of other peoples cards. The other thing with exclusive products is that a lot of the companies will offer something as exclusive and then a few months later come out with a design that is similar but not exact. Concord & 9th does this a lot. The "Oh Yeah" layering stencil set for C&CD was turned into "Big Hugs" and sold a few months later. I'm not a fan of clubs like the Taylored Expressions quad of the month club where you are locked in sight unseen. While I LOVE the May stencil, it's too much of a risk to buy from TE without peeks. I'm just not a huge enough fan of their products. I didn't mind the Spellbinders clubs because you used to be able to opt out. Same with Hero Arts. I really really like the virtual events where you get product. I know this started because of COVID but I hope it never stops. I'd never be able to go to multiple in person events because the cost would be too high if it wasn't local. While C&CD is getting boring because they are not changing up the companies, I like the multiple company events. I'm super excited about the Pink Fresh & Stamp Market collaboration. As scrapnnana said, I don't owe companies anything. Do I want them to stay in business, of course. That being said, I need to get the most bang out of my buck so I'm going where the product is the most inexpensive.

I just want to add my .02 about clubs. I have no problem with them. Yes, they are a crapshoot. And a risk I'm generally not willing to take. I've tried a couple, and still have 2 more of the SCT LST kits coming. The first one I got, GinaK was fine. Not exciting, but fine. The second was Brutus Monroe, and suffice it to say I am not a fan. It was recently announced that next one coming will be Spellbinders, so I have hope with that one. And I have no idea what the last one will be. I'd imagine the membership in most of these clubs is very low, maybe a few hundred. The retailer is taking a chance by trying to make a product with such a small run profitable. I noted that TE is offering a 3 month sign up soon. Nothing for longer than that. I'd imagine that they will take stock during those last 3 months and see if it makes sense for them to continue with it or not. Am I bummed that I won't have their stencil set delivered to my door? Yes. But, if I really want it and cannot find it, I'll buy it from someone on the TE buy/sell page. Back in that other post, I was asked for my "receipts" as it pertains to production, etc. My first career was in high end specialty retail (having nothing to do with crafting of any kind). Eventually, we got into wholesale, also became a US distributor, importer, and product design. I spent a decent amount of time with our manufacturers in their production facilities in France, Germany, Spain, and England. Had containers waiting at these ports, and once filled, they'd be on their way to us. I sold my share in that business when I was 33 and completely switched careers. My BG in retail, wholesale, imports, distribution, and production is fairly extensive. Or at least it was back in the day As far as gimmicks to pull me in goes. A sitewide sale will do it. And with the ridiculous cost of shipping, complementary shipping helps too. Things like SB<dot>com's freebies and always a sale on something don't do it for me. Often the freebies are things I would never use and I opt out of adding them to my order anyhow. Lastly, I'm with the others. I owe a company exactly nothing. If they have a products I'm interested in and the price is good *for me,* great. If not, I'll move along. There are so many choices how and where to spend our money. There should be no guilt about feeling like one needs to be supporting a business at all IMHO.

So many good answers! I agree with you all, and I guess I should say my retail experience/understanding isn’t anything past buying stuff.
I love a company like Gina K (and others!) that has a slower turnover in products and who has loads of samples. Who uses the older items as well as new items. I don’t always decide right away but if you use the product enough and it’s still available… eventually I’ll cave, lol.
This is a personality quirk of mine: if you say you are going to do something, do it. So if you say that after the release we are going to have a great video on ways to use it and no video shows up, I’m noticing. I’m talking on the regular over-promising and under delivering, I am not keeping spreadsheets, lol.
A free shipping threshold is a great thing and I know exactly how much it is at all my favorite retailers. But if you are charging me $7.95 for shipping and my package regularly takes two weeks to ship and arrives in a first class envelope… our retail relationship is on shaky ground.
I am a person who can put outfits together but I love a great kit. I’m not swayed by stickers or adhesive but I love great stamps, dies and cardstock. It has to be my style and all that stuff, but I will spend money on a good kit.

I am trying to relate more to this idea of not owing a business, no matter how small, anything. Right now, that has some synergy with my free shipping obsession -- if I order SU through my local demo with a smaller business, she aggregates a bunch of people's orders and pays the shipping herselft. My long-distance one is very successful, so even if I use some of her ideas, I don't owe her my orders, especially since I then pay SU's stupidly large flat rate. It's also worth my while to support my local because she does in person events. Though I need to be careful about bringing too much outside product to her home.

Kits, especially sight unseen ones are a huge no. I cancelled my spellbinders cub when they no longer allowed me to op-out a month. I have no problem paying a reasonable shipping rate but some companies are out of their minds with their rates. I confess, I head to Amazon first to see if I can find what I’m looking for. I’d rather pay an extra $1 or 2 then pay $6.95 or more in shipping. Another big issue with me is shipping times. If it’s going to take 2 weeks to get to me when you’re not having a big sale then you’ve lost me.
When I first got back into cardmaking I jumped in with both feet, I had to have it all. I learned my lesson and now I will put things on my wishlist and when I do decide to place an order, maybe a month or so later, if I still love it it’s goes in my cart. You’d be surprised by the number of things that never make the cart just because I waited awhile. I wish I had learned earlier, my craft room wouldn’t be overflowing with things I thought I had to have that are now just sitting there unused and taking up space.

While I love free shipping lately I rather pay for it than spend more money to get it. I'm lucky that I have 2 BFF and we shop together a lot to get free shipping. I look it this way it would cost me $10 in gas to go to my LSS to get something specific and on top of that I would pay taxes( almost 9%) too and probably end up buying more stuff because I'm already there 😆. They do have an outlet next door where they have 10-70% of some older stuff. I picked up some good deals there, but last time it was quite empty.
I have missed out on some exclusive products, but after 2 weeks I don't miss them so I'm ok that I didn't get them. I get too exited when I see new products so maybe I should make myself wait 2 weeks before I order anything 🤔.
Sometimes waiting it works out well. Spellbinders always have good deals and lots of times the club kits go for $5-$10. I used to get them monthly but I'm running out of space and money. Im on a budget this year so I have to pay attention to what I'm getting.

BUT if you change the cart again it will pop back up and you could easily miss that it's been added back and end up paying for it. I think the main advantage to it vs the regular insurance packages have if they go priority is that once the package is delivered the post office considers their responsibility over. Selling on eBay I have had to refund a customer who kicked up a stink about porch piracy when a package went missing - the post office confirmed they'd left it on the porch so they said it was the recipient's problem, but it was sent as a gift so... ugh.

I have become more selective of what I buy lately, but I still have FOMO for some things! My room has plenty of those "things" I HAD TO HAVE, that sit unused and unloved. I still can't bear to part with them because I "might" use them someday. I should KNOW THIS... the struggle is real. That said - I do like to support crafting businesses - lately it's been TE and Honey Bee Stamps, both new businesses I found from C&CD. I do try to meet the threshold to get free shipping (we all know THAT ain't hard). I don't know of any Stampin' Up reps around me or any other MLM. My daughter used to sell Close to My Heart, but I never really liked them. I have belonged to several kit clubs (Hero Arts, scrapbooking kits that are no longer around), and finally dropped them when I realized I wasn't using what I get. Like the rest of you, I've become more selective of what I'm buying as my room fills up with "stuff." However, the excitement of Crop & Create Delivered is spreading to other companies that are offering virtual crops now - and none of us know what we're getting when we sign up. Why do we do that?? I don't always like what I get in the box, but I'm at least willing to give it a try. I guess what I'm trying to say, is, that I do like getting new products with instructions/videos on how to use them. For the most part I'm okay with someone else telling me this is what is best/new/the latest thing. I'm not like Jennifer McGuire, who can just look at something and imagine how to use it. And this group, right here, is really good at causing FOMO . We've got our own little "marketing group" right here.

For me, I don't like anything with a regular recurring charge, any kind of subscription or club, no matter whether there's an opt out or not. I don't want my default to be shopping every month, even if I like the stuff. I will opt in if I see something special I love, if there's extra. If I miss out on exclusives and limited editions I'm OK with that. (Selling off a relative's limited edition collectibles crap from the 90s has made me very skeptical about mass produced things marked as limited editions). Everyone ends up copying or rereleasing most things anyway. And I don't actually want to make the same cards as everyone else anyway. I want to think really carefully about my purchases and get really versatile stuff that I really love, so no kits, clubs, or subs. I also decline almost all freebies.
I'm wary of things like the Jaded Blossoms gnomes too - every month a new add-on set I'm going to love! 2 years later they're still coming up with a new must-have set every single month. Ugh. I can't handle that much stuff and it's too easy to justify buying more and more to make better use of the first set.
I also don't like itty bitty discounts all the time (I'm looking at you, scrapbook dot com) or periodic massive discounts that show that everything is chronically overpriced.
What do I like? Predictable and consistent/moderate discounts - I'll wait for a sale I know is coming like 20-30% a specific brand and then throw a few extra things in my cart I probably don't need or love as much as I think. I'm pretty easily influenced by good videos and demonstrations of tons of different ways to use a set, even if at first glance the product is not my style. If a crafter is really excited about all the uses they have for a new product I can easily believe I will feel the same way... especially people who make tons of cards like JMcG and Kristie Marcotte. Some crafters I sense are just fulfilling a DT brief but the ones who are genuinely excited to make dozens of cards can sway me. I try not to buy right away to assess whether I'm being influenced or not.
Free shipping feels really nice even though I know nothing is free. Adding $17 onto a shopping cart for shipping makes me feel sick even when I know that's how much the shipping costs the company. But the pressure of buying at a specific time to get free shipping and finding the things I want most are out of stock annoys me. If I'm going to shop a sale you better have what I want in stock and you better ship it out fast! I don't like waiting for my order to be pulled and shipped.
I don't like being pressured to spend money by a deadline, and I've learned to be very wary of clearanced items - I think I have to have them before the chance is gone forever but there's usually a reason they didn't sell.
I have been pretty easy to influence in the past so I've worked on a lot of defenses to protect myself from overspending and being disappointed. Procrastinating on shopping or hitting pay now on a full cart saves me bundles of money.

I read some posts yesterday morning, started typing my reply, got busy at work, and when I finished it and posted, several people had posted. When I was finally able to circle back, I was too tired and rambling incoherently, so I just gave up and went to bed. I'm going to try separate a few things and see if I can be more focused.
People brought up both website ease of use and customer service in terms of items being in stock and timely packing and shipping. These are the kinds of things I think you don't notice until they get in your way, but when they do, it's awful. I placed an order at SSS for some storage/organization items on Sunday that are still in status "unfulfilled". The order I placed at HA Monday will arrive tomorrow. From clear other across the country. It's not Stamptember or some other crazy special promotion at SSS either.
EtA: Here's a new one to me. Club Scrap will let you place an order with discounted shipping if you agree to let them hold it and ship it with your next subscription kit. The order status updates to "fulfilled" and you get an email saying that your order is on the way, but will be held in the warehouse if you selected "with kit" shipping. I skipped the last 3 kits, so I had a fulfulled order, supposedly packed and waiting for that long. Placed another order recently with full-price shipping so that I would receive the new order AND the fulfulled order. NOPE. One of the items in my supposedly fulfilled order was just refunded, presumably because it's not in stock anymore. So either they didn't actually fulfill the order or...?

This is why I don't do pre order anymore with an order...I knew my order was going to be held until the pre order items were ready and I was fine with that. Until my actual order things started to get refunded because they did not actually pull them until the pre order things were in. Then I got refunded for my actual order. When I ordered those things, they were in stock. It has happened 3 times now, so I am done.

I think my first two orders from SSS were during "Stamptember" and both came very slowly. But in the second one I ordered the October card kit without really understanding that it was a preorder. Luckily everything did arrive. Fun update on my current order with them: my USPS Informed Delivery tells me it will arrive in tomorrow's mail. SSS still shows the order as "Unfulfilled." LOL. They're more efficient than even they know.
Weirdest customer service experience -- Club Scrap seems to market itself as, well, a club -- sort of cozy and friendly. But I swear when I have questions about things, they make me feel like I'm being a total PITA and they'd prefer I take my business elsewhere. Which pisses me off so much that I want to stay a customer just to piss THEM off!

I hadn’t looked at the Jaded Blossom Gnomes for awhile, so after reading your post, joblackford, I had to go look. You weren’t kidding about their numerous add ons. I bought the basic gnome set and the cowboy set (I live in cowboy country) awhile back, but have purchased none of the rest. I have no interest in having gnomes for every season. Those add-ons can really add up if you take the bait. I’ve also gotten weary of pressure tactics. Procrastinating on buying new releases has definitely helped my budget. I try to figure out the percentage of the new releases that I will actually use IF I buy them. That has been an eye opener, and it has helped me resist the temptation to buy on multiple occasions. It helps me to see that buying a kit, and knowing I will actually be using only 20% of the products, is really paying a ridiculously high price for the few items I really like, want, and would actually use.

Like lindas , I find sight-unseen kits/subscriptions to be a complete non-starter, but like @msrp I love a good kit. It amazes me the breadth of offerings that are all called "kits" and I've tried many in the last year. I have learned what makes a "good kit" for me. Edited for concision:
I really appreciate cardstock in a kit, since you often get a variety of colors or exclusive colors/prints unavailable elsewhere. I like the durable elements, like stamps, dies, and stencils, to work well together with the theme, but also be flexible and able to be combined with other things and in other ways. For consumable items/embellishments, I prefer ribbons/twine, enamel dots, and pastes/glosses over stickers or pre-cut die cuts/chipboard. I have an ink cube addiction and love a kit that includes some. In other news, CS got back to me. The person in the warehouse explained how the error happened (back at the time of fulfillment) and why it took until shipping for me to find out. She also offered to send me an unopened pack that she had in her stash with my next order. I take back all that stuff I said about them.

I'm wary of things like the Jaded Blossoms gnomes too - every month a new add-on set I'm going to love! 2 years later they're still coming up with a new must-have set every single month. Ugh…. I hadn’t looked at the Jaded Blossom Gnomes for awhile, so after reading your post, joblackford , I had to go look. I follow Kristie Marcotte's videos - she's on the JB DT so I see ALL the gnome add ons (I often have her videos on while I craft). Some of them are actually pretty cool with elements that you could use without the gnomes at all. But as soon as I realize something is going to be added to monthly until they run out of ideas, I'm out. Some Pea mentioned counting the number of sentiments in a set that they would actually use over and over to decide if it's worth getting. I tend to love sets overall, but if I actually give them a closer inspection and count I realize half or more of it I will never ever use. Ditto on a lot of kits, like you say.

I still rambled a LOT about kits. Sorry, all.
Edited the post above to be more concise.

I like going to the conventions. I like the touchy feely aspect, and the instructions if needed. I'm going to EXPO Puyallup and staying for all 3 days. I like to wander through the crop area and pick up ideas from others. Also it's a get-away, kinda like a mini vacation.
I think conventions are a great way to get closer to the customer base and put a face on your business.

It’s a chance to see products and companies that I never would otherwise, especially since I have no LSS near me. And I always end up buying things and finding companies that I had never heard of before. These days, the smaller, newer companies tend to be the ones who go to conventions. It’s a great way for a newer company to make the customer base aware that they exist. Some of my favorite “finds” have been purchased from small, lesser known companies that came to convention.

I have no LSS and few conventions near me, but I plan to go to the closest one which will be held in late September. I've never been to one and until you started talking about going, don, I didn't know anything about them.

I remember one of the times this happened to you kmage , and I just wanted to pop in and say that Scrapbook Generation is the only company I've shopped with, who's inventory is always spot on, and they actually pull your order and hold it if you use their bank it option. Even if you are ordering a preorder with other things. I've been in the store and noticed how they make that work. And honestly, other companies could do the same if they really wanted to. I have never once ordered and paid for a product there and then been refunded on something that went out of stock later. This is an interesting thread, and as someone who works for a smaller, family owned company (not in the craft industry) that ships UPS, I can say that the cost of shipping is high. And I think we are seeing some of that passed down from companies that could in the past, eat those costs. I hate paying for shipping, but if the discount offered comes out roughly the same as the shipping would be, I'll bite. As to the OP's question about what sucks me in, it takes a lot these days. My stash is pretty healthy and I'm running out of space, so it has to be something so different that I don't already have something similar in my stash - and I usually have more than one that is similar enough - or I have to have a use for it right away.

My 2 cents: Free shipping is not free - not with a high minimum. It encourages us to buy what we don't want just to reach the minimum. We are paying for shipping regardless of whether it is in higher prices per item or a direct shipping fee.
I don't like companies whose stamps and dies now approach $70. No thanks.

marg I was reading your comments on the TE Quads thread and agree with you about the artificially limited supply. I think it can work well to some degree, encouraging/forcing people to subscribe or order immediately, but I think it can put people off (like me). I also think it can result in people buying extras to sell at inflated prices on eBay knowing that there's a demand for them, partly because resellers were crowding out legitimate customers at checkout I think we underestimate the lead times on most manufacturing, especially through Chinese factories. Literal slow boats from China. I remember Studio Calico predicting demand as much as 6 months out so they could place their manufacturing orders and receive things in time. Locally made things probably offer shorter lead times but higher prices. Subscriptions and pre-orders make sense as a way to accurately predict demand and get money up front - good for the company, but not good for my budget or storage space!

It occurs to me that I have been a sucker for much of this. When I read folks talking about how they can resist because they have plenty, I guess I'm vulnerable because having been out of the hobby for a decade or two, I felt like I had nothing. I think I am learning to resist the sales and coupons a little more, maybe because I am finally feeling like there's a LOT of stuff in this craft room!
Last weekend, when SSS had a $20 off $100, I tried valiantly to get to $100. But I could only do it by adding the HA Compact Cutter...which cost exactly $20 more than it was direct from HA, so no savings there. I definitely take things out of my cart that I was adding to get to the minimum. In this case, I placed a smaller order for the things I originally went in there for, but generally in that kind of circumstance I put them on a wish, favorites, or project list. At some point, they come off either by getting ordered or me changing my mind.
I am still vulnerable to the clearance sale savings. I like to think that because I've been out of the hobby, things that are old hat or boring to other and/or that my taste is somewhat outside the mainstream. I realize it could also be that these things are on clearance because they're just not good. I try to read reviews, but of course some sites (hairy eyeball your direction, SU!) don't allow them. Mostly I think I've done ok with clearance shopping. A few things I've bought really just to see what something was like -- I did that with one of the older Spellbinders subscription card kits. I knew it was on clearance because it hadn't been a popular one, but I figured it would be representative of the sorts of things they put into these kits (and then imagine it without the stamp and die sets to get an idea of the new quick card kit).
I find it interesting that Altenew was bragging about their generous discounts during their retreat, but they weren't all that. Their coupon for C&CD was also one of the most restrictive and least generous. I don't even think their rewards program is particularly generous. But I LOVE their weekly sales, if you can stay disciplined, know exactly what you want, and wait for it to show up deeply discounted.
