If you get a card with airline miles (we have the Delta AmEx) you can achieve status with spend alone. We put every penny we can on our card to keep our status now that we don’t travel for business regularly. Then we use those points to get free flights. Alaska, at least, doesn't allow credit card miles to go toward status. It's only actual miles or segments flown. But I think they also have significantly lower mileage requirements than many of the other airlines to earn the first tier or status.

I think that's right -- my husband has status on American based on his American visa card spending, but I think the Alaska card may get you miles for signing up, but doesn't earn miles for status based on spending (I am not sure, I've never signed up for it).

United also has a minimum flight requirement - want to say 4 segments? But didn't look it up, so could be wrong. Google tells me I'm right! You can earn premier status from spend alone, but need at least 4 actual flight segments.

Non-flight miles don’t count for status.

American has this annoying habit of closing the plane door 10 minutes early. When I fly through Charlotte I always pay extra for a seat closer to the front of the plane so I can get off faster. Sometimes that’s the difference in making a connection and not making it. 😡

I love my Chase Sapphire, but maybe the Delta AMEX card is worth it. Do you run across situations where you can’t use it very often, or are most retailers accepting it these days? I have one but I only use it for access to presale tix for concerts.

My company card is Amex and I've used it at about every kind of company - in person and online - in the past couple of years and haven’t run into any place that didn’t take it. Maybe small vendors at farmers markets or something, since Amex is higher on their exchange fees? But I’m not sure if Square lets users pick and choose which cards to accept.

I have an old legacy card that doesn't have club access but gives crazy miles for grocery and home improvement purchases (huge categories for us) so I just pay for clubs - but honestly they've become so crowded I'm not sure it's worth it. We also have priority pass through Chase Sapphire, so don't forget about those clubs depending on where you fly.

Wanted to update and let you know that we survived Spirit Airlines and didn't pay any extra fees. We didn't get assigned seats online since we would have had to pay for those. We stood in line at the airport to check in. The Spirit attendant said it would be $100 if he checked us in and sent us to a kiosk so we could check in for free. The kiosk wasn't working for anyone so we stood in line again & figured we would have to pay $100 to get checked in by a human. 2nd time through the line, he said since the kisok was down he would check us in for free. We got great seats together and didn't pay any extra. We both packed SUPER light in a small backpack each and it was considered our personal item. They were pulling people out of the boarding line with personal items that looked too big. If their personal item didn't fit in a tiny box they were having to pay $100 to board the plane. My bag would not have fit. I was just dang lucky they didn't pull me out of the line. I'll definitely avoid Spirit in the future unless it's just a killer deal. I wouldn't have flown with them if I had known it was such a hassle and money grab. There were absolutely no free snacks or drinks. Our 1st flight was 4 hours long. The guy behind me asked for a cup of water and they charged him $4 for a small water bottle. A can of coke was also $4.

Thanks for the reminder that Spirit isn't worth it! $100 to get help from a human! 😳😵💫
While I love a great deal no deal is worth getting nickel and dimed for breathing.

I hate feeling nickel and dimed. The airlines are getting ridiculous. The only time I flew Spirit was when my father in law died and we were trying to get home as quickly as possible. It was the only non-stop flight available that day. Everything was an extra fee.
Southwest is nice, but when things go wrong it's a nightmare. Look what happened last December. But I still look at them first when looking at flights.
We tend to be carryon only people and do not over pack. But we always check a bag coming home because we get souvenirs. The baggage fees can add up quickly!

My dd flew on Spirit once and joked that it cost more for her luggage to travel than her!
