I have done both, I have also done 9/80. I did love the 4/10 and 9/80, but only when my boys were older. A regular 5 day schedule was easier when they were younger so that I could be home earlier for them.
Having a Friday off every week, or every other week for the 9/80, was great! The extra 1-2 hours at work was not bad. But here is one downside. You got docked for holidays. For instance, you work 10 hours a day but you only get 8 hours for a holiday. The extra 2 hours came out of our vacation time.
Our Company did away with both 4/10 and 9/80 because of abuse and people not being around when needed. Someone in our department saved up all of their days off and took a one month “vacation” without having to use vacation time. I don’t know how the company allowed that. Must have been a loophole the employee found.

I love the idea if an extra day off, but, once you account for an unoaid lunch, it is 10-1/2 hours per day and that is a lot. I would rather be home earlier in the evening every day. Also, when working 4 10s, there is no way to make appointments during the week without having to use PTO (my dentist, for example, is not open on Fridays, so that would be an issue) I currently work 8.5 hours M-Th and 6 on Friday, which is pretty great. I start at 7:15, so am done by 345 M-Th and 1:15 Friday. Occasionally, I do 4 9s and the Friday is only 4 hours Luckily most of that isn't a factor. I work at home so no commute, and I could start as early as 6 a.m. And I have a TON of sick time (our sick and regular PTO are separate) so appointments would be no issue. I think I'm hesitating because my job now is so boring and doing 8 hours is a chore some days, I can't imagine doing 10. ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) The new one is not in a specific discipline like I have now, it's in physician billing and covers lots of areas. And not straight coding, it's a lot of claim correction and electronic appeals, which makes it more interesting. (Basically coding on the back end instead of the front). I've done that kind of thing before (in radiation oncology) and it's more problem solving then repetition, so 10 would be doable. Without a commute and with flexible hours, Id do it!

exactly jeremysgirl. I do it because I have no choice (other than quitting which really isn't a choice) or doing this job somewhere else (which could result in a pay cut and longer commute). I don't mean to be a debbie downer because I love my job and I have figured out strategies to deal with the schedule but it is for sure not something I would choose.

I worked 4 10's before moving to this department I had off Wednesdays and I LOVED having off mid week. It was like having two weekends a week. Thought about asking to move to that in this department, but not sure how they feel about it This would be my perfect schedule but I’m a teacher so no go! When we returned after Covid we had 1/2 the school in at a time so 9th & 10th M/Th and 11th & 12th Tu/Fri and Wed was remote. Loved that even though it was hybrid.

From what you’ve posted here, I’d say do it! The extra day off would be worth it. If there was a 30 minute (or more) commute time I’d have to think about it more because then it would make for very long days.

When I worked, we had that option. The 4x10 was the more popular one. I managed to pull a few strings and did a 4.5x9 (in other words, worked 9 hour days and was off every other Friday), and that was perfect for me.

I’ll be the outlier and say I would find 10 hour days super long. I like to get outside, get some exercise etc when my work day ends around 5:30. Not finishing work until around 7 or 7:30pm — four days in a row would be very hard for me.

Not finishing work until around 7 or 7:30pm — four days in a row would be very hard for me. I try to walk most days, so even tho I work 7-3, I often walk at lunch and then work until 4. So I'd work 7-11, then walk, and then work 12-4 to get my 8 hrs in.

I work 4 days a week & live for my Fridays off to run errands, attend appointments, meet up with friends, hike, take 3 day weekend trips. I love my 4 day work week!

I can do 4 10s didn’t love it. I am thriving with working all my hours in 9 days of each 10 day pay period but my days off had to be preapproved, the day off HAS to be same pay period and same day each pay period unless that day is a holiday then we choose another ahead of time and the schedule is cast in stone every 6 months and can not be changed. I do ‘owe’ vacation hours for holidays. Annoying but I don’t really mind.
I could NOT do more than a 10 hour day. I’m just too exhausted for that.

I love doing 4/10s! Unfortunately most employers in my area don't offer it as an option. Where I'm at now does a 9/80 which means I get every other Friday off. It's a decent compromise. I absolutely hate working 5 eight hour days.

Well, after 25 years of 5/8 I just changed to 4/10 last week. I could not have done it when my kids were little, but they are long grown. I went from 8-5 with an hour lunch to 7-4:30 with a half hour lunch. The lunch is the big adjustment for me. I used to go home (5 minutes away) at lunch and now I have to pack a lunch. BUT, having last Friday off made it worth it to me!! Good luck with your decision.

I often work 10 hours a day (the joys of being an exempt employee) so if I could do it regularly and get an extra day off a week, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But my preference would be to take a day off in the middle of the week to run errands, schedule doctor's appts, etc.

I would select 4 10s. I was lucky enough to be able to set my own schedule at work. When we returned to work after COVID a lot of my duties disappeared. I was working 9-4 Mon thru Thu and 9-1 on Fri. Lived that schedule. I could have gone in earlier on Friday and left earlier, but I am not a morning person.

I would prefer 4x10 I used to be able to work 4x9 and then a half day on Friday and it was so nice to get a jump on the weekend and run errands. A whole day would have been amazing. As long as you are physically able to do so - I am not sure I would be able to do a 10 hour day at this point in my life. It depends on you and the job how mentally or physically demanding it is. I know I would be really drained by Friday and that was just working 9 hours but it was worth it to have only a half day. My job was mentally draining though.

I worked 4 x 10 (well 9.5) for several years and absolutely loved it. The days didn’t feel long, and I got more done. And having 1 day a week to do things that needed to be done during the week, like drs appointments and a 3-day weekend every week was wonderful. Your weekend felt a lot longer simply because it wasn’t only Recover Day (Saturday) and get ready for next week (Sunday). That one additional day changed the way the whole weekend felt.
When the company switched from (38 hrs/4 x 9.5) to (40 hrs/5 x 8) I asked my boss how he expected it to affect productivity and he didn’t think it would. The act of getting to work/getting settled/going to lunch/getting settled/getting ready to leave takes so much time each day. And I definitely didn’t notice an increase in productivity in our department or personally.
Can’t recommend it enough.

I could easily do 4x10s, as I work a lot of extra hours anyway.
But I think 9/80 would be great too.

Three twelves or 5 eights. With four tens you have no time to do anything for four days. With three 12s you have four days free. With 5 eights you have free time and don’t get as tired so weekends are better. I hated when I worked for 10s.

Four tens for sure! But I’m a teacher and parents at my school would never go for that. We get grief when we’re closed for a teacher work day.

I work shift work so I work 4 shifts, 2 off, 4 shifts and then 6 off. When I have to work Monday to Friday 8 hour days ( reassigned to cover someone who works that shift) I always wonder how anyone gets anything done. I would always take the longer shifts, more days off option if I could.

I would love to do 4, 10's. But just knowing how my PTO day's go I would end up working on my day off anyway. We have what they consider summer hours June through August that we can leave 3 hrs early on Fridays. I took advantage of that last Friday and still ended up having to come home and log back on.

I work 4 days 12 hr shifts.. then i am off for 4 days... its a very long day... 4 days off is always good.... But if I could... id want to go back to 3 shifts that are 8 hrs... instead of 4 shifts that are 12 12 hour days is such a huge leap. When my DH had to do it, it was the worst. He just worked and slept. I couldn’t rely on him for anything on his work days. But 10 hour days are heaven.

Since I also have jobs in the evening it would depend on if I could do the 10s and still have the extra jobs.
