I am a new or not new morning person. I mean with a name like Dawn? I prefer to get up between 7-7:30 but sleep until 9 some days (not sure why). I was always a day person until university. Now I have the need to get up and get going. Why? I am liking getting stuff done in the AM but am not sure why. I need by Japanese green tea by 8. Eat by nine and lunch if I eat it that day.

I was always a morning person from very yearly years and the pattern continued as life changed.
School, working, parenting, walking the dog - all these life style events kept me a morning person. When i retired all of that went out the window. Now I go to bed when I want, as early or as late as I feel like. My days (and nights) are my own and if I want to sit up late I can and do but if I feel an early night is needed then that is what happens.

Why do you need to get up and moving early? Several reasons.... I can make more money Ubering in the early morning but we aren't starving with out it. I feel like I get a lot more accomplished as someone mentioned above. Hubby is an early morning person and he gives me a lot of grief about sleeping in late. Thanks to everyone so far for your comments!! Karen If you need to get up early, treat Uber like a job where you have a start time. If you have things to do, just get up and get going. Choose one day to sleep in an extra hour

I have always been a night owl. I don't feel the need to get up and "get going" unless I have to get up for work. If I didn't have to work, I would stay up until 2:00am-3:00am every night and sleep until 11:00am-noon every day. One of the things that irritates me, is comment of >> "must be nice to sleep all day". My reply is always >> "I sleep (increments) 8 hours in a 24 hour time period. I do not sleep *all* day. I do what is best for me. Not what is best for everyone else. A coworker told me I am wasting the day by sleeping in. I told him “I get 6-8 hours of sleep a night. You may wake up 2 hours earlier than me, but I go to bed two hours later than you. How am I wasting the day??” It’s not wasted time if you are productive during those two hours in either direction. For me, I’m a slow starter in the morning so even if I get up earlier, not much is happening. Plus I pretty much crash and burn at night so even if I’m awake later I’m not actually doing anything. 🤣

Have you tried a circadian rhythm lamp? You can gradually change the time you wake up.
When looking at my daily sleep schedule I’d consider how you feel and function best. If getting up 2 hours earlier puts you in a bad mood, or makes you less efficient during the day, is the time change worth it?
As for those who say “it must be nice to sleep all day” I sometimes reply “yes, yes it is.”

Just wanted to add one thing that helps me get up early when I have to is sunlight. My bedroom faces east, so I get the morning sun coming into the room because we don’t have shades on all the windows. It is enough light to irritate me and wake me up. 😂 It also lets me know if I am sleeping too long. Where I live this doesn't work. In Michigan in the winter, sunrise sometimes isn't until almost 8:30 am. Now near the summer solstice the sun is coming up around 5:30. So that might work for some people. But winter is dark. Either way I'm up in the dark. I was up at 4:15 today. 😂 Which feels way too early, damn hot flashes.

I just wanted to share that I read this article this morning in the New York Times about morning exercise and how to shift your circadian rhythm. I thought it might be helpful to this discussion. NYT Article Morning Exercise

Our dogs need to go outside. Surfing the internet while drinking a cup of coffee in bed is one of the best parts of my day. After that we walk dogs and get ready for the rest of the day.

Thank, enabler! I've just ordered one, it will be here tomorrow! I wish I'd known about this earlier, DSO could have used it on the plane and in the hotel the night the fire panel was beeping all night. He had to sleep with his earbuds in, but they kept falling out.

I hate getting up for an alarm and I will NOT have the expectation of myself in retirement to get up at a certain time. In my opinion you’ve earned the right to sleep as long as you like. Be productive once you’re up.
