It really depends on the hotel. I’d call them directly, be super nice and plead your case. We’ve had one say yes and we’ve had one say no.

I’ve tried twice, no luck the first time even though the hotel was willing. The second time I was able to but only because they were willing to move the reservation to the next week (due to cancelled flights in that mess last Dec). After the first unsuccessful time I never travel without travel insurance anymore though.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I’ll call the hotel itself (not the 800 number for the brand) first. Then I’ll try booking.com. Last resort, my CC. It’s helpful to know that some of you have been successful. Fingers crossed and yes, I’ll update.
I don’t typically book non-refundable. The savings for 2 rooms for several nights in a busy city was substantial, so this time I did.
Without going into further detail, this is not a trip that can be rescheduled.

My dh did that, without me knowing (booked nonrefundable). We had to absorb cost when we canceled a trip to Nashville. I was so ticked. He is absent minded so probably didn't even realize. Grrrrr.

I really hope you can get a refund.
My daughter booked a car through a third party several years ago. We were going to Florida during spring break (ie high demand/high prices) to help my dad who had been recovering after ten days in the hospital. Four days after booking, there was a death/funeral in our family and we had to postpone our trip. We were able to rebook everything without an issue, except for the car rental. Even her credit card company was unable to help. It was a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson never to use a third party.

This is why I don’t book non-refundable rooms, and I try to only fly Southwest for the same reason. I’d rather pay more but be able to change my plans if needed. Hope you’re able to get your money back in the end. Yep, nor do I. But we did this time. The savings was substantial. 🤷🏼♀️ I have to add that your reply feels like a hand slap of sorts, even if that wasn’t your intention. I think you are being over sensitive. Lucy was just stating a fact and said at the end that she hopes you get your money back. Even if you feel it was handslappy I think you could have been gracious and ignored it. You updated your post with that request after she posted I believe. Your post feels handslappy back. And I realize my post now feels handslappy, but I am ok with that. ETA you did add your ETA asking people not to chastise you (which is not at all what Lucy did) an hour after Lucy posted. I don’t see anyone chastising you at all actually.

I did once and they cancelled it, but I had a very good reason.

Once! And it was booking.com. They refused, so I called the hotel directly, and they had no problem. It's up to the hotel.

We had a situation where we needed to make a partial cancellation. I called and e-mailed Priceline and the hotel without any luck. Each one put it back on the other and ultimately, we went through our credit card company. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

I have never dealt with this myself. I didn’t even know there was such thing as refundable. Transferable would mean the third party and hotel don’t get free money is what it looks like to me. I guess in a way it’s a gamble? So let’s say every non-refundable purchase that was ever made went through. Would the hotel go bankrupt? It reminds me of the digital coupons at my store. It’s like they know not everyone will know how to access them or else they may lose money rather than profit. At least that’s how I view it. But it sounds like people are sharing stories where they got their non refundable purchases refunded, so it sounds promising.

Hardly ever are they at 30% off which is product value. Loss leaders however do cause profit loss BUT they are used to move product, bring in customers (especiallynew ones), and profit back by selling other items. Loss leaders are typically on big sale and front page of the stores ad. Things that are 50%+ off.

I dount you'll get anywhere with the cc company if you were thinking of disputing, but I hope the hotel/booking.com can help you. Im currently dithering over booking refundable vs non refundable for our Las Vegas trip. Non-refundable would save us $250. Of course, I paid $260 extra for refundable airline tickets, so I guess Im thinking booking non refundable hotel would make up that difference.

I'm sorry you have to cancel. I agree with others that you should at least try cancelling and see what happens.
This won't help you now, but there are "cancel for any reasons" travel insurance that you can purchase. But even then there is fine print. I hope things work out for you! Good luck.

My last job we had two hotels. We don’t refund 3rd party bookings. You have to go through the 3rd party, they are the ones you paid.
For the hotel to refund you they would be paying you for not coming.

The only time I have was when we had a hotel booked during Oct of 2020. My daughter got Covid and we had to cancel the trip. I had booked through a 3rd party sort of - it was travel through my credit card company but the room was non-refundable. They cancelled it with proof of my dd's positive test, though I'm not sure they would now.

MichyM - curious minds are wondering if you had any luck? So far no. Have spoken with booking.com and the hotel (they say they have not record of the reservation?). Next up is the CC issuer. I'm going to go in and speak with them in person this week.

If they refuse to refund it, could you at least get them to transfer it to someone else? Curious what international city it is - I’d love to book something for December lol (Sorry you are going through this, it must be very frustrating)

I do the points game and it is not uncommon for the third party booking (which is what booking with points is) to somehow mess up and the hotel not have the reservation.
Soo... maybe if you called your credit card company and disputed the charge because booking.com did not actually book the hotel because the hotel does not have your reservation.
I mean, this is true, they don't have your reservation.
I'm not sure what kind of history booking.com took when you tried to cancel it.
Just a thought.
