After many, many disappointments on trips we made some family rules: We don’t eat Mexican food outside of Texas And We don’t order tea north of the Mason Dixon line or west of Amarillo 🤣🤣🤣 In our family, we don't eat seafood when we travel inland.

cantonese sort of chinese food Cantonese style is my favorite. It is what we ate when I was growing up. It is hard to find now down this way. Most places here are Mandarin or Szechwan style.

.we just miss the things we miss. That's what it comes down to. We miss the familiar and wonderful tastes of places we have lived and/or visited in the past. We have lived all over the world and I miss something from every place we have been (well maybe not KZ ). There is nothing like fresh sourdough bread and dungeness crab in San Francisco. The food in NOLA and Cajun country simply can't be replicated elsewhere, no matter what people say! Baguettes (especially a warm fresh one) in Paris can't be matched. And add me to the list of those who won't eat TexMex outside of Texas. However, I'm at HEB & Central Market at least twice a week and it's as great as everyone says!

My rules: I don't order Mexican food outside of Texas. I don't order ice tea in a restaurant.
Last summer during a road trip, Dh went into a Chipotle somewhere and got me food. I had ordered a large unsweetened iced tea and when he came out he also had two of those raw sugar packets on the lid. I had a confused face and he replied with "I took a sip. Trust me, you will need them." He was right, it was awful.

I second this!! I have it shipped every year for the super bowl.. well the ones the Chiefs are in.. and I order extra brisket and burnt ends to save for when I have a craving. I haven't lived in KC for over 25 years and I still miss good KC BBQ!!! I miss fresh from the sea ceviche and yellow tail from my years in Cayman. And Fish and Chips, Indian food, and Sunday Roasts from my time in the UK. (and REAL Cadburys!!!) If I ever leave Asheville I willl miss Chai Pani (the best Indian street food ever!) I could go on and on. Other than a amazing friends, food is what I miss from the places I have lived!!!

I will only eat Tex-Mex in OK or TX. Everywhere else that I have tried it, it is awful.

Lived in far north Fort Worth for 10 years. Gone from there for 13. Still miss Tex Mex, Babe’s Chicken and Taco Casa. Babe's is one of my favorite restaurants! The chicken fried steak is amazing.

I totally get this. I moved from New England - Vermont and New Hampshire - to the San Antonio area last fall. The politics are...not for me. But HEB is really great! The Tex-Mex has spoiled me for life. The puffy tacos in the San Antonio area are incredible. Breakfast tacos are great. And so much queso. And nearly every restaurant has good brewed sweet tea AND unsweetened iced tea.
We were living on the seacoast in New Hampshire so I really miss the lobster! And the access to Cabot cheese. I can get one kind at Costco but that's it.

I don’t want it to sound like we don’t have good food here. We definitely do! I mean, the seafood alone is amazing. And the Mexican food is good. One thing I love here is Chile Rellano burritos….a burrito with a Chile rellano inside! And the carnitas is amazing. Tri-tip is very popular around here….you didn’t see that much in Austin. Also…wine. And the most amazing almond croissants you will ever taste. The restaurants here are really eclectic and quality. So we have plenty of choices….we just miss the things we miss. This is what popped into my head. I have access to fresh, delicious seafood whenever I want. I would definitely miss that if I moved.

Tea from a fountain? I don't know what that is, but it can't be anything good. I don't like ice tea, but that is how I feel about lemonade from a fountain. It is never the same.

Tri tip is definitely a California thing….. specifically a central coast California thing! We like the tri tip sandwiches at Firestone Grill in SLO. So, since I’m in the SB area once or twice a year…. what Mexican restaurant is your fav? And where can I find the amazing almond croissants?!? 😆

I can relate. I moved from Southern California to Oregon and while it isn’t so much the kinds of food, it is specific restaurants that I miss. They were small businesses so I know they will never appear here. I do have to say they have delicious Mexican food here. And if I was to have to choose only one type of food to be able to have access to, it would be Mexican food, so I consider myself lucky there. But while it is superior to what I could get in Orange County, I do miss the other restaurants. And for some silly reason, I miss the Daiso that came within the last few years. There have been a few occasions already that I wished we had one in this area. They carried this small neck pillow that I am assuming was for travel. My neck has been fused and I have to put something behind my neck when I lay down or I am in terrible pain. I do have one that I brought in the move and it is the perfect size and softness, but I am having to carry it room to room to use it. I know, that isn’t a big imposition, but when you get all settled onto the couch to watch a movie and realize your neck pillow is in the bedroom, I hate having to get up and go get it. It isn’t just the inconvenience, getting up off the couch is very painful for me. I think it is due to the Fibromyalgia. Anytime I sit still for a few minutes, getting up again hurts terribly. So if I had a Daiso here, I’d just buy a couple more neck pillows. Eventually when I find my sewing machine, I will just make a few and it will be problem solved. But yes, I relate to missing certain foods and even grocery stores. Have you looked online? They have some available, including this car neck pillow.

I have seen this black style in the store and the coveriing is somewhat scratchy. The one I have has a softer blue felt fabric on it instead of the black ones shown, BUT with the base form, it will be simple to just make a softer covering to sew over one of these using the existing fabric as a pattern. And I can just suck it up and use one of these until I find my sewing machine. Looking online didn’t occur to me for some reason. So thank you, thank you!🥰🥰🥰😘😘🥰🥰🥰

So all of you saying you don’t eat Mexican food outside of Texas … are you talking about Tex-Mex or Mexican? I understand the two are very different. We have Mexican food here, Tex-Mex is hard to find.

We have Mexican food here, Tex-Mex is hard to find. In my experience, what passes for Mexican food outside of border states is often a poor attempt at Tex-Mex. I’m sure there are exceptions, but that’s been our experience. Mexican food itself has several different regional styles, but it never lacks seasoning, and store bought tortillas are not used. It tends to focus on fresh ingredients. Crispy tacos are not a thing.

Crispy tacos are not a thing. What I find strange is that if you order a taco here, you get a soft shell. But, if you order a chicken taco, you get a hard shell. I've seen this at various Mexican stands here in San Diego. And ground beef in tacos is not the usual fare here. Most of the time I get a carnitas taco, but if I want something crunchy, I'll order a chicken taco.

Do they fry the tortilla with the chicken already inside, like tacos dorados or taquitos, or are they giving you an American-style pre-cooked hard shell?

One fries it with the chicken inside. That place is popular with my coworkers, but I find it too greasy. Others will fry the shell separately.

I understand how you feel about missing Texas. I'm a native Floridian, but my heart is in Texas (lived in Houston for 18 years). I'm back in Florida and I agree with everything you said. TexMex is not TexMex anywhere else. HEB is the mother ship. Bluebell Ice Cream is the bomb. My cat and I won't eat anything else! We didn't have Bluebell in Central Florida when we moved there in 1996. The day I walked in and saw it in the freezer section I started crying from happiness! I can make breakfast tacos better than the restaurants. But I cannot imagine life without AC!!
I'll add Shipley's Kolaches to the things I miss from Texas.
