The Targets near me have closed them due to the amount of thefts. I miss them as they don’t have express lanes nor enough cashiers. Just wondering if this is happening elsewhere.

No, but they have a very small entrance to get into them at my Target since they remodeled. It's hard to tell if the checkstands are busy before you get in line because there's a wall.
ETA: my Costco doesn't have self check out (except in the food court) yet.

No, not closing here. In fact, some times I see only one or two regular check stands open. And I am in SoCal.

Our Wal-Mart installed all these self-checkouts a few years ago. Just upgraded them last year or so. Now due to thefts about half of them aren't open. Ever. And it's the ones by the door I like to go into, of course.

No, but there is usually someone monitoring them.

They started limiting the hours of operation a few weeks ago and then abruptly closed them at several of our local stores. It’s funny as so many complained about them but now that they are closed people are upset lol. I have to say that the cashiers I have encountered have been really nice vs before they closed and for the last five years or so I seem to find the cranky one but the last six months the cashiers have been mostly really pleasant.

They're not closed, but one of the grocery stores I go to has a limit on the number of items (20) you're supposed to abide by.
In fact, our Aldi just recently added self-checkouts.

Nope, in fact there are often only one or NONE AT ALL checkers. It's pretty much all self checkout at Target, Kroger, Home Depot, and the annoying times I need to enter Walmart.
Aldi is the opposite though, as is Walgreens and Michaels and Hobby Lobby and TJMaxx. I rarely physically shop any other places.

There is one regular cash register and then in the place of the other check-out spots, there are self-serve machines. Maybe 3 or 4 of them. They are actually easy to use and they have no problems scanning your coupons.

I haven't seen any close at the places I go to (mostly only the grocery store, Costco, and Target) but they have ramped up various anti-theft measures. At my grocery store you used to be able to leave your groceries in your cart, scan them one at a time, then put them back in your cart. I used to shove them all down to the front of my cart, set my reusable bag in the back, then as I scanned I could just drop the item into my bag. I can see though how people could take advantage of that. So now we have to set each item onto the bagging area as we scan. And we can't take them off of that area until after we've paid. We can't even set our reusable bag down on that area. So because of this they've had to put a limit of how many items you can do at self-checkout since that bagging area isn't very big.
The last time I was at Target I didn't see anything new, but they always have an employee there watching. Same at Costco.

I won't use the self-checkout at one particular store because of that. I had so many problems with their machines. Every time I used them, I had to call the cashier for something. One was that apparently the weight of the item was not "correct" so even though I placed the item on the bagging area, it didn't register. But, I don't see how that deters theft. If you are going to steal something, you are not going to scan it! Once you scan the item, it shouldn't matter if you place it in your pocket or on the bagging platform.

I love them and would be sad to see them go. So much faster than waiting in line behind people with filled carts and chatty people. Not picking "the wrong" line to get in and waiting longer. I think I am person who likes to do things myself and be as efficient as possible when I shop. The self check outs are just faster and overall more efficient if you don't have a cart full of stuff.
My Walmart just opened more. I love Sam's self check outs. I just leave everything in the cart and use the hand scanner. No picking up and loading into another cart.

I haven't seen that here. The only places I go in that have self checkout are Target, HEB, and Home Depot, and those all seem to be going strong. They are always monitored, though, which is fine with me.

I think one way it cuts down on theft is that the employee who is watching the self-checkout area can see if you've emptied your cart. If you tried to leave something behind in an effort not to pay for it the employee would see. But with the old way of scanning one item then returning it immediately to the cart, next to the other items that weren't yet scanned, it would be easy not to scan something.

I put everything in my cart with the barcode facing up and use the wireless scanner ~ zip, zip, zip and I'm done. I bag it once I get to my car. At Costco, I do the same thing and an attendant in the self-checkout usually comes over and scans everything for me so I don't have to put anything on the *tray*.

No. There are more of them. I will use them if I only have a few things, but I am not ringing up and bagging a large order. It’s a pain.

They only have them open on the grocery side. They are always closed on the pharmacy side (which is the door I use). And one whole lane on the grocery side is closed. I assume they only open them if they have enough employees to monitor each self checkout lane. My Walmart is a smaller urban one that has locked up almost everything. Sometimes we drive out to the far west suburbs and the Walmarts out there are huge, don't have anything locked up, and have massive self checkout areas.

Well, they just enlarged our Target and added more self-check lanes and fewer lanes with checkers. I always use self-check because I’m so much faster and I don’t have to make chitchat with the checker.

No I haven't seen any closing here, and I hope they don't. I use them almost exclusively. And my usual supermarket has got the full size self serve checkouts with the moving belt. I was in heaven when they installed those, because it meant I could do my large grocery shops myself as well, instead of just the smaller ones.

I hate self serve with a passion, unless I only have one or two items and there are no express lanes open. I think changing to self serve puts a lot of people out of jobs. I'm hoping that the full size self serve checkouts don't come near me! (I'm on the north side in Sydney.)

I'm hoping that the full size self serve checkouts don't come near me! (I'm on the north side in Sydney.) This is at Coles. It's a big store, and has lots of the little self serve registers, lots of registers with checkout operators, and about 6 of the full size self serve registers with belts. I know there are a lot of people who feel the same as you, and refuse to use the self serve because it reduces the number of staff required. The way I look at it, it's no different to plenty of other jobs that have been reduced over the years due to changes in technology. Banking (ATMs and online banking), film processing and camera shops (digital cameras and phone cameras), bookshops (Kindles etc), the girls who used to operate the telex machines at work back in the 80s..... All of these things have made things easier or more enjoyable for me, so I have embraced them. But I know I am probably in the minority with my love of self serve checkouts, so I think you should be okay for many years yet.

I'm with you. -- Also, the union shop steward at my grocery store told me that our self checkouts did not put anyone out of a job. If anyone would know it would be the union guy. He said that the store was already having trouble finding enough employees so they were short-staffed to begin with. Plus, the self-checkout area always has at least one employee supervising, often two of them. I know one of them pretty well so I asked her one day which she preferred, a regular cashier job or supervising the self-checkouts. She said she preferred to work at the self-checkouts if she could choose.

No, but our area is always behind.
I love the self-checkouts at our local grocery store. There are the small number of items stations and the large order lanes. Between the Boy and I, we have the operation down to a science.
Walmart is an iffy proposition. So, if I only have a handful of items and the self-checkout isn’t busy, I will run through there. Otherwise, I go to a cashier. Again, you don’t know what you are going to get. There are really good cashiers and, well, I hope yesterday’s guy was just new. It looks as if they finally got rid of the cashier who thought praying over, while laying hands on customers, was a good idea. At least he would ask permission first.

No not at all. There’s a person who monitors check out and, at Costco, the scale knows if the item you placed there matches a scanned item.
