NBC NEWS SAYS: Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., has been indicted on federal bribery charges, the Justice Department announced Friday.
The indictment alleged that Menendez and his wife, Nadine, received “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in bribes and used the senator’s influence to enrich several businessmen from New Jersey, as well as the Egyptian government.
Menendez received cash, gold bars, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low- or no-show job, a luxury vehicle and other items of value, the filing said.
The indictment also alleged that Menendez provided sensitive U.S. government information and pressured an official at the Agriculture Department for the purpose of protecting Egyptian American businessman Wael Hanna and the government of Egypt. Menendez interfered in an investigation undertaken by the New Jersey attorney general into New Jersey businessman Jose Uribe, it said.
Menendez “promised to and did use his influence and power and breach his official duty to recommend that the President nominate an individual for U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey who Menendez believed could be influenced by Menendez with respect to the federal prosecution of Fred Daibes," a New Jersey developer, the indictment said.
Menendez’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.

I posted it an hour ago.
He unfortunately was doing an event somewhere in NJ and ABC was just showing the press conference side by side with the event.
Missed the press conference while stuck on the phone with the no so wonderful Xfinity...

I didn't see your post. If he is guilty I hope they lock him and his gross wife up. I don't want scum bringing the Democratic party down like the repubs have done to their party.

He won’t resign - he thinks he’s untouchable since he beat the last set of charges. And those charges seemed to have a decent case but he beat it. If even 1/2 was true he’s a horrible person. He is a horrible Senator and really needs to go but the state dem party is stupid.

If he resigns then the Democrats lose the very thin majority in the Senate.
Then the question becomes will the Governor of NJ replace him with another Democrat or will the seat remain empty until the election next year.
And as a reminder that I was told about trump and his indictments that the man is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

I would hope Murphy would appoint a democrat. But several choices are sitting representatives. Thinking Sherrell, Gothheimer... not sure Murphy would want to give anyone a hand up if he, Murphy, wants the seat.
We have to watch GOP Tom Kean Jr. No doubt he will head that way and no way do I want him!! Maybe Christie will shove his nose in there too... not do good either!

I stuck it in the miscellaneous thread. Didn't want anyone say we don't post the 'bad' accused Democrats.. He was at an event in NJ which was shown half screen on ABC with the press conference . Unfortunately Cory Booker was sitting right next to him.... Booker better walk away before he gets tainted..

Oh I think they've got 'em this time. Yes both of them, Menendez *and* his trophy wife. lol
MSNBC had photographs of the spoils including gold bricks and piles of cash. They have wife's collection-agent-type texts reminding them to pay up because Bob took a risk and did this huge favor for you and blah blah blah.
They might as well plead out he won't walk this time

He has made a statement.. And excuses.. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who was indicted on Friday on bribery charges, hit back at prosecutors and claimed that shadowy forces want him jailed because he's "a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings." In a defiant statement released after the indictment, Menendez claimed that "forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempt to silence my voice and dig my political grave. He went on to accuse the prosecutors who indicted him of "excesses" in which they "have misrepresented the normal work of a Congressional office." www.rawstory.com/bob-menendez-indicted-2665718187/

NJ governor is a Democrat and NJ a blue state. I see no reason to fear losing the seat if he resigns. It would certainly put a sock in all of the “two-tiered system of justice” jokers.

As I posted above it's complicated. Very much so. Several leading are sitting US representatives. Murphy will have to consult and decide who he wants to appoint, there are other Democrats, but who can gather the votes would hopefully be the one appointed sooner.. GOP risk is Tom Kean Jr who is also a sitting US representative. Who knows, Christie might give it shot.

But he's innocent until proven guilty, right? Or is that only for republicans?
Frankly, I'm tired of Democrats doing the right thing. Is there a law that says he can't serve from jail because apparently POTUS can.

Localish news.. NJ.com governor and other Democrats call for Menendez to resign. He states that he isn't going anywhere... Gov. Phil Murphy and other top New Jersey Democrats late Friday called on Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, the state’s senior senator, to resign hours after prosecutors announced he was indicted on bribery and influence peddling charges. “The allegations in the indictment against Senator Menendez and four other defendants are deeply disturbing,” Murphy said in a statement. “These are serious charges that implicate national security and the integrity of our criminal justice system. *** Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop posted on X the most candid response from a sitting Democratic office holder: “It’s been well known that there has never been a close relationship between Senator Menendez and I - but I genuinely feel bad for the embarrassment he has caused all of New Jersey who trusted him with a vote. We work hard to change a bad narrative + the detail of his indictment tarnishes all of us in our state.” www.nj.com/politics/2023/09/murphy-other-top-nj-democrats-call-on-sen-menendez-to-resign.html

From NYT and WP - NJ Governor and other NJ Democrats called on him to resign, but he refused. No Statement from Corey Booker yet. Menendez did send a letter to Schumer, required by the Democrats' governing rules, to temporarily step down from his chair of Senate Foreign Relations. www.nytimes.com/2023/09/22/nyregion/robert-menendez-indicted.htmlIf Mr. Menendez were to quit, as Mr. Murphy has suggested, the governor would name a successor.“These are serious charges that implicate national security and the integrity of our criminal justice system,” Mr. Murphy said in a statement.“The alleged facts are so serious,” he added, “that they compromise the ability of Senator Menendez to effectively represent the people of our state.”Mr. Menendez did send a letter to Chuck Schumer of New York, the Senate majority leader, informing him that he was stepping down as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, as required by rules the Senate Democrats adopted to govern themselves.www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/22/bob-menendez-foreign-relations-chair/The call for Menendez to abdicate his seat was echoed by state Democratic Party Chairman LeRoy Jones Jr., who said urging the senator to step aside was a “tough decision.”“But to read the indictment is to see that these allegations are serious,” Jones said in an interview. “It just leaves people like myself and other elected leaders no choice but to call for his resignation.”
Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (D-N.J.), one of the most senior members of the state’s congressional delegation, said the gravity of the charges made the difference. “I do not believe that Senator Menendez can continue to carry out the important duties of his office for our state,” Pascrell said. New Jersey Rep. Andy Kim (D) said Menendez should resign because he lacks “the ability to properly focus on our state” while contesting the allegations. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) said Menendez’s resignation would be “in the best interest of our state.” It was a sentiment echoed by another Democratic member of the New Jersey congressional delegation, Rep. Mikie Sherrill.
“These are serious allegations against Senator Menendez and if proven true, there is no room for this kind of conduct in public service,” Sherrill said in a social media post. “Today is a sad day for New Jersey and I believe it’s in the best interest of our state that Senator Menendez resign.”

Who keeps over half a million in cash unsecured in their home... Yeah. Some parts of this story are made for the tabloids. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/22/menendez-indictment-democrats-should-urge-resignation/Some choice details from the indictment: “Over $480,000 in cash — much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe — was found in the home,” in addition to more than $70,000 in the safe-deposit box of Menendez’s wife. And in the sort of tidbit one usually gets only on TV shows, prosecutors say some of the envelopes had the fingerprints or DNA of co-defendant and real estate developer Fred Daibes “or his driver.”

I agree. This seems like a moment for Democrats to shove him out and show how different they are from the Republicans and their handling of Trump & George Santos. Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a downside to pushing him out. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/22/menendez-indictment-democrats-should-urge-resignation/Yet this is a moment of choosing for Democrats. Unlike their GOP counterparts, they should not feel compelled to cover their eyes and ears when one of their own appears to be caught red-handed.
Democrats, the only party still adhering to minimal standards expected in a democracy, should not stand by Menendez silently. Sure, Republicans have refused to force out Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), the epic fabulist who is facing a 13-count indictment, including for fraud and money laundering, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Yes, Republicans are rallying around Trump (despite the 91 charges he faces in four indictments, all of which he is contesting). But that is precisely why Democrats need to shove Menendez off the political stage. If they want to be the guardians of democracy, the rule of law and truth-telling, they cannot mimic Republicans’ partisan hackery.
Let him fight the charges, as he clearly intends to, but not from a perch on Capitol Hill.
And to be politically crass, there is zero downside for Democrats to insist Menendez go. Murphy would appoint a successor, and the deep blue state would surely elect a Democrat to fill the seat in 2024, when Menendez’s term is up anyway. Why not do the right thing now, and gain some credibility with voters?
This is one of those times when doing the right thing is good politics. Other Democrats should follow the lead of Murphy, Kim and Phillips.

I just had an disconcerting thought. If they throw Menendez out or he resigns, the Democrats will be one down ... would they be able to seat a new democrat? New person would not get that committee either.. the same issue with replacing Feinstein...
