Welcome to CARDtober Peas! Let's kick off a fun month, full of challenges and card making. I hope you'll come and join us and play along with the challenges or just stop by and say hi! I will challenge you the next 5 Sundays to create something with vellum. This Sunday we are going to create a card base out of it. Choose your card size fold it in half and have 3-4 shaped panels. I like to add the first panel in the inside and just add a panel to each side to hide the adhesive. Make sure they are all aligned . For the twist I would like you to use an embossing folder on the card base, make sure you use a printer paper with the vellum when you emboss it. It helps to keep the vellum intact and less likely to tear. Here are some of my examples with and without dry embossing. Let's get crafty Peas!

Those cards are amazing. I'm going to give it a shot but I only have one sheet of vellum to play with so not much margin for error

Beautiful card Linda. I really like your embossing folder. There is so much detail in it. And the glitter paste adds so much shine to it. Thank you for playing and sharing!

Here is my card. I discovered I do not like working with vellum for card bases, but this is the first time I have dry embossed on it, and that was fun. Thanks for the tip on using copy paper with it. It does not look like it, but the vellum is a pale pink. I embossed only the top 3rd of the base. I watercolored the image. I had no cardstock to match the flowers so I copic colored the 1st layer of the sentiment strips. My 3rd panel is a small one on the back where normaly I would stamp "made by" but since I messed up and pushed too hard when making the crease, the vellum cracked. And I did not notice the slight crease of the vellum on the right bottom of the card, SoI will be keeping this one as my sample. Thanks for the challenge!
ETA: If I were to make this card again, I would still use embossed vellum, but only as a card front. I would restamp the flower image after I water colored it, and The inside image i would stamp in a medium gray color.

I don’t know if it’s because the vellum in my stash is extremely old (10 years or more), or if it was the embossing folder that I tried first, but even with a piece of type paper or waxed paper buffer, my vellum still tore. I ruined at least six vellum card bases. I finally switched to a small polka dot pattern. It still tore through a tiny bit, but the pattern was small enough that it was less noticeable at least. I’m still trying to figure out what more I want to add to the front, but if anyone is having issues like I did, try an embossing folder with a daintier design.

Thank you for the challenge azcrafty ! I was planning a card like this, with the 3 characters in an arch, so when I saw your challenge I thought I would just put the arch on the vellum card. I have exactly two embossing folders, bricks and swiss dots. I LOVE how the swiss dots look like the snow that falls during the magical sleigh ride in Nutcracker Suite! (At least that's what happened in the last performance I saw - a LOT of fake snow.) The front is done but when I went to post I decided I needed to add more inside, so here is the front and hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph and post the insides tomorrow. Edited to add the inside:

Your card makes me want to pull out my Christmas card supplies, Linda . Great idea to use that tree folder! Also thinking the dotted folder would make a great snowfall background once I have a card panel to put on it.
Yours turned out really bright and cheerful, jjpeapea! Gorgeous colouring of your vellum, FurryP . Here is mine, azcrafty . CARDtober #1 embossed vellum by Gramma Dee, on Flickr scrapnnana , the first vellum I found was too flimsy and didn't even survive the folding. Then I struggled because I wanted to use an overall leaf embossing pattern, but the only one I could put my hands on was a 3-D folder and I couldn't even get it to work with one layer of cs, let alone two of vellum and one of paper. I finally gave up on that and decided to use this wheat field folder. Decided to ink the back for "sky" and then put the greeting on the inside of the card. Actually the cutapart I glued in there helped to stablize the card, so I was happy with that.

I never thought about vellum getting old , but I can see that with age it could dry out would make it more brittle. You can always sandwich the vellum front between 2 pieces of type paper to have pressure on it.

FurryP your card is gorgeous 😍. Love your watercolored flowers. I add the 3 or 4 panel for extra support when I make the card base out of vellum, it really helps. Where did you find pink vellum? jjpeapea what a fun card...the Swiss dots definitely look like snow ❄. Is the the Spellbinders nutcracker card kit? I almost got it at my LSS. grammadee great card, love the extra blending you did in the back.

azcrafty , I tried putting the type paper on both sides, on one side, etc. I also tried waxed paper, since that is what I’ve used in the past. Either my vellum has just gotten too brittle, or it’s too thin, or the design too bold, or just cheap quality, but the tiny swiss dot embossing folder worked well enough. Although the photo doesn’t show it well, I added tiny gems, and Wink of Stella to highlight the ornaments and the lights. It looks nicer in person. I put a blank tree cutout behind the print & cut tree on the front, and another blank tree on the inside back with the sentiment, and it will be a place to sign the card.

So many cool cards. scrapnnana, I am happy you found some vellum and a folder that would work for you. Love the classic look of your card and the little holly corners and those pops of red. kmage, that rose card is A-MAZE-ING! justjac your embossed leaves look really rich--the perfect backdrop for those pretty flowers.

azcrafty those holiday cards look so festive and the vellum is perfect for that, looks frosty! Love it! linda that tree is lovely! The embossing is beautiful and it hardly needs anything else it is so pretty! FurryP I've never seen pink vellum before and it is just so pretty. The colors you chose for coloring go so well and I love the watercolor jjpeapea, your embossing is perfect! It totally sets off the Nutcracker scene. Are those copic colored? They look amazing. grammadee I am not sure what you used, but the peaceful scene and the shimmer on the card is so pretty, what a beautiful card to receive for thinking of you or another peaceful sentiment. scrapnnana I love your tree! I think the holly highlights the color (love the green vellum!!) and sets off the card so well. justjac I think the thickness of the vellum lends itself perfectly to the embossing and you got such good texture, love the flower too!

Linda - The tree on the clear vellum has so much texture and interest! I like how you can kind of see throught it. I might try an experiment where I have a figure that is deliberately see through, like a tree shape with bright color ornaments under the tree. Since I only have two embossing folders that may be tough. FurryP I love the delicate coloring in your card. I like the stitched looking x's too! grammadee What a lovely look - delicate colors and how they blend subtly together. scrapnnana Swiss dots are cute, right? Everything is all lined up nicely. Elegant. kmage LOVE the Gothic rose card. The dark and shiny colors on the light and transparent vellum is a nice combination. Such a balanced composition. justjac I like how the leaves in the vellum support your flower image. Pretty! azcrafty and kmage I used the Spellbinders Nutcraker chipboard stickers. I admired how they used arches to set off the figures, so I tried to use that idea. No Copics, just stickers.

Thank you everyone. I love how we all the the same challenge and everyone's card is so different. azcrafty I just had the pink vellum in my stash from years and years ago. scrapnnana my vellum was kind of old too. That is probably partly why it cracked when I tried to crease it. The other part would be me forgetting it was vellum and pressing too hard. I had no troubles embossing, though.

I own one big embossing folder; wood grain. This one was a challenge for me, but it was fun! It's hard to tell, but I ran a brown ink pad over the embossed card front. I had a mishap with the gnome die, so I added the Prima flowers to hide my mistake. I used SEI, Dollar Tree, Echo Park, Simple Stories, Provo Craft, and Prima. I can't remember the manufacturer for the gnome die. I used combined sentiments from two stamp sets. The yellow on the hat isn't so bright IRL. I'm on my phone. I'll come back to leave praise.

Linda great job with the tree. A lot of detail came out! FurryP I am impressed by the coloring of the roses! jjpeapea awesome idea to use swiss dots to mimic snow. grammadee the photos you used are gorgeous! scrapnnana I had issues with mine tearing too. It's older vellum as well. I can see where you added the glitter. Very pretty. kmage that Gothic rose is very cool! I love all the shading. justjac I love the soft colors you chose for your card.
I hope I got everyone!

I forgot to add this! azcrafty thanks for the inspiration! I only have one large embossing folder. It was fun to be challenged. Thanks for the tip about using paper when embossing. My vellum is quite old and it was a bit brittle, which is why I adhered it to the back of another piece of pattern paper.
