I know we are all different in the authors and genres we enjoy, but I think it would be fun to talk about our favorite book of the year. For me it was The Covenant of Water. I loved every bit of the writing, and wanted to take my time and savor all of the book and not finish it too quickly. (It was a longish book, so I didn’t have to worry much about that.)
What was your favorite among the books you read this year?

Let Us Descend by Jessmyn Ward
It was the last book I have read. Couldn’t bear to pick up another afterward. Not sure how long it would have lasted, because I have a new puppy, aka Land Shark.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt and Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger both got 5 stars. I gave 4.75 stars to Fish in a Tree by Linda Mullaly Hunt.

Best Book: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Worst Book: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah I had a hard time with The Great Alone also. Kristin Hannah kind of depresses me.

The Story of Us by Catherine Hernandez. After my initial dislike of the narrator I absolutely loved it.

In addition to the books I mentioned in the other thread, I finally read Tom Lake by Ann Patchett and loved it.
My favorite book I read this year that wasn't published this year was The Great Believers, by Rebecca Makai.

I'm adding books to my To Read like crazy! I just finished Those We Thought We Knew by David Joy. Definitely a 5 star read for me. He's not a well known author but I had someone recommend it to me. It is a beautifully written story with so much heart. It's a mystery, too, and I didn't figure it out til almost the end. I've read 76 books this year - so far. Other 5 stars read this year: - The House We Grew Up In - Lisa Jewell - The Diamond Eye -Kate Quinn - We are the Light - Matthew Quick - This Tender Land - William Kent Kruger - Ordinary Grace - William Kent Kruger - The Great Believers - Rebecca Makkai - Earths the Right Place for Love - Elizabeth Berg - All That is Mine I Carry with Me - William Landay - Our Missing Hearts - Celeste Ng
It's been a good reading year.

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell. I read it in almost one sitting as I was so gripped by it. The sequel, The Family Remains, was also good but not as good as the first.

It's part of a trilogy with The Secret Keeper of Jaipur and The Perfumist of Paris. Secret Keeper is good and I'm just starting Perfumist.

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen This was absolutely stunning. The description alone of this book is magical & grabbed my interest right away. “Down a narrow alley in the small coastal town of Mallow Island, South Carolina, lies a stunning cobblestone building comprised of five apartments. It's called The Dellawisp and it's named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy. When Zoey Hennessey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment at The Dellawisp, she meets her quirky, enigmatic neighbors including a girl on the run, a grieving chef whose comfort food does not comfort him, two estranged middle-aged sisters, and three ghosts. Each with their own story. Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn't yet written. When one of her new neighbors dies under odd circumstances the night Zoey arrives, she's thrust into the mystery of The Dellawisp, which involves missing pages from a legendary writer whose work might be hidden there. She soon discovers that many unfinished stories permeate the place, and the people around her are in as much need of healing from wrongs of the past as she is. To find their way they have to learn how to trust each other, confront their deepest fears, and let go of what haunts them. Delightful and atmospheric, Other Birds is filled with magical realism and moments of pure love that won't let you go. Sarah Addison Allen shows us that between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways.” Definitely going to the top of my TBR pile ! NOTE: flanz mentioned above, currently a Kindle Unlimited selection right now !

Where the Crawdads Sings— although that might have been at the end of last year. It’s a nice book with lots of twists and hidden meaning or it can just be read for light entertainment. Beware there is a big twist at the end!
