UPDATE Thanks for all of your replies! I must have gone to a third party site, and I should have clued in because it didn't look like what I was used to seeing. duh! I wasn't clicking a link in an email from DMV reminding me of the renewal date... which I what I usually do. I had Googled CA DMV and the 3rd party site is the first one that came up!!!
Before heading out the door I mentioned my situation to a friend, who told me that there is a machine at a nearby supermarket (VONS) where she pays her DMV renewal fees with a $10 charge for the privilege. I just came back from there. That was true until 2 weeks ago, when the machine was removed by DMV. I picked up cash on my way home.
I am heading to AAA to pay in cash in order to avoid the substantial credit card fee and to GET IT DONE.
*** WTBLEEP!!!
I've always renewed online without any processing fee.
There are now 2 fees to do so: service fee of $49 and transaction processing fees of $30. Crazy!!! I might just have to go in person. It’s due Dec 26. They have the gall to boast that by GOING GREEN almost 2 million DMV hours have been saved!!
Another way costs/burdens are being shifted onto consumers. GRRRR!!!
Have you renewed a CA auto registration lately?
Curious about other states.
When I was home in Ontario, Canada a couple of months ago, I learned that the gov't got rid of renewal fees altogether, and that they had never been tied to the value of the car. Everyone had paid $120 annually. My total before fees is $631. It's due on Tuesday so I need to drag myself over to the local DMV this afternoon. On principal, I refuse to pay such ridiculous fees, and yet, my time is valuable too. I'll check out the line and see how fast it's moving. Ugh.. I wonder if I should take cash... since they'll probably charge me the $30 fee for using a credit card

I renew online in NJ. FEE $1.50... Oh, and my registration is $39.00 a year.

I renewed in July. There were no crazy fees. Are you sure you are at the actual DMV site and not a third-party that does the registration for you? You can renew at AAA if you are a member. ETA - This is from the DMV site. Your payment information. All credit/debit card transactions include an additional 1.95% payment processing fee. If paying directly from your bank account, there are no additional fees. Here is the real website: www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/vehicle-registration-renewal/

In Texas, most are $33 and a $1 processing to use online.
Edited: Ignore me. I was referring to DL renewal and not registration like the OP.

I wonder if I should take cash... since they'll probably charge me the $30 fee for using a credit card Part of it is a processing fee back to the card holder. I pay cash in person for this reason. When we bought my car I paid the title fees in cash, several hundred dollars. I hit the bank and then rolled up to the DMV with my hundreds in my little envelope. The teller didn't even blink. It irritates me to pay the processing fee. I also agree check and make sure you're not on a 3rd party site.

I don't live in California but I think to have my registration stickers mailed instead of pick them up at the auto license place (Washington is weird it's not at the DMV), is less than $5.
I live in Washington, but DH works in Oregon. When filing our Oregon income taxes online I'm charged sales tax because my address is in Washington. I find it so incredibly stupid since Washington has nothing to do with our income, or our taxes except the address happens to be here, that I print and mail my taxes through snail mail every single year.

I’m reading that it is still $120/year in Ontario. As in Alberta, they are no longer issuing expiry stickers, but you still have to pay for registration.

In Texas, most are $33 and a $1 processing to use online. That's for a driver's license and it's only every 8 years. I think she is referring to the annual auto tag renewal, which is more like $75 and $1 fee.

I mail a check, also in CA This. One of the few things that I write checks for. I also pay my property taxes by check. There is no way that I will pay any bill that charges me money for the privilege of paying online. That is ridiculous.

I renewed both of ours this month--AAA with no fee (if paying cash or ATM), credit card fee of 2.9% if you charge it. And you get the renewal sticker right then. DS does his at the Safeway nearby--only $5-6 and gets the sticker immediately also.
I agree with pp to make sure you are on the right site for DMV.

I had to renew in October. There was a fee to renew online but it was a % of the total. I think it totaled about $15 in fees. I won't give them any additional money so I went to AAA to renew. Otherwise I would have mailed a check.

All of the above. And, if you still want to mail a check, I believe it’s considered on time as long as it’s postmarked by the due date, just like income taxes. But you can double check that online.
I didn’t pay any crazy-high fees like that when I renewed my older car in June.

I renew at the WV DMV kiosk at Kroger or Sheetz. There is a $3 convenience fee, but the machine spits out a sticker and registration card. Unless you are late with your registration, then you have to wait for it to come in the mail because they only stick stickers with the current month, but you do get a receipt that counts as a temporary registration.
Renewal is $52 for one year, so $55 total at the kiosk.

For something that was free through its.gov.

I did that as I had to wait till August this year to pay and it took 2 weeks to get the stickers. Those 2 weeks the sticker was invalid by the date but DH just kept the print out per instructions and was never pulled over (CHP and Police can see it has been paid)

I know that the original issue has been sorted, but I have to say, you guys have got it good! I assume you're talking about vehicle registration? In Australia (well, my state anyway) the standard vehicle registration is over $800 per year. I pay mine quarterly, and it's $220 per quarter.

In Australia (well, my state anyway) the standard vehicle registration is over $800 per year. I pay mine quarterly, and it's $220 per quarter. Our California registration fee includes various taxes and fees. One of the fees (Vehicle License Fee) is 0.65% of the purchase price/value of your car. And this fee decreases every year for the first 10 years. So if you have an older car, you can be paying about $300/year for the entire registration fee.
