Does anyone have recommendations for archival quality boxes to store scrapbooks from the 1950’s in? I want to preserve my mom’s things properly. I also need the best way to store a 50+ year old baby quilt. I really don’t have anywhere to display it. Here are some companies that sell archival storage products. I have ordered from Gaylord before and been pleased with the products. For the quilt, you want to be sure to use buffered archival tissue paper. It will also benefit your quilt to roll it, rather than fold it. Folding stresses the fibers and will eventually result in broken fibers. If you do fold the quilt, then please make sure to refold it a couple of times a year to prevent creases and fabric breakage. If you don't want to pay for archival products (they are not inexpensive), then the next best thing is to wrap the quilt in a clean 100% cotton sheet. Note - the sheet should not be washed with fabric softener or dried with dryer sheets/fragrance pellets. I have some vintage clothes and small quilts rolled in cotton sheets and stored in my cedar chest. It's worked well for many years. I would love to see a photo of the baby quilt some time! Had an impromptu decluttering session tonight while trying to plug a wifi booster in the cabinet below the tv which has electronics. A few months ago we donated all our DVDs and I finally was able to put my hands on the DVD player. It's in the donation box now. Also rediscovered the Echo dot that I haven't used in at least 3 years. It has been deregistered and is being donated. Then two iPad boxes went into the recycle bin. The whole process took less than 10 minutes. Just shows that progress can be made in short bits of times here and there! ETA: Having just reread dewryce prompt yesterday, I realized that I was actually on task for the electronic decluttering!

Today I consolidated my stickers and sorted them by season. I’m storing them in old Archiver’s 4x6 storage containers that have handles. I’m glad they fit and I had just enough to hold my stickers I’m currently using.

I conquered not 1, but 2 desks!!!!!! I managed to finally get my desk at work cleared on Friday. My “to be filed” bin went back to Thanksgiving which makes sense because that’s when the crap started hitting the fan around here. And today I found the top of the desk in my home office/scrap room. I put all the papers in a giant box to gradually go through but I finally have a workspace! I signed up to participate in a huge kids consignment sale in April. That will get all the little kid stuff out of the house for good including the crib. DS is 8 lol. Best part is you can choose to donate whatever’s left at the end and they deal with it for you. DH got the last of the Christmas stuff down for me today. I’ll pack it up tomorrow. I gathered a small box of stuff (greeting cards, puzzles, yarn, etc) to donate to some of the ministries at the church where my school is. Does anyone have recommendations for archival quality boxes to store scrapbooks from the 1950’s in? I want to preserve my mom’s things properly. I also need the best way to store a 50+ year old baby quilt. I really don’t have anywhere to display it.Lots of good progress! If you keep the photos in their original scrap books they will continue to deteriorate. What I’m doing with my Grandparents’ album is moving everything to an archival scrapbook that looks as vintage as possible. I took photos of the pages in order and will place them as close to the original position as I can.

Yesterday I got a little done in the bedroom and cleaned the bathroom but then I got sick. Right now I am going through jewelry and not sure what to keep. I think the answer is to get rid of what I haven’t worn but I posted a thread about whether or not it’s worth keeping some of the favorites? My main hesitation is that I have two hooks on my bedroom wall behind the door that hold necklaces (I also have a jewelry armoire). I could probably get it down to just the armoire if I got rid of several necklaces.
I also have an older SLR that I don’t use. It had a zoom lens but the regular kit lens doesn’t work. Should I just donate it? Or is there anywhere to sell it? I’m sure it’s not worth much. The lens might actually be worth more on its own. I have another SLR that the lens fits on but I have the same lens for that camera.

Do you know where they are going to be displayed? You could consider using Dana’s method (From a Slob Comes Clean and Decluttering at the Speed of Life) and let that display space be the limit to how much you keep. Put your favorite on the shelf first and when you run out of room you donate the rest. iamkristinl16 I keep meaning to ask if you’ve read her book or watched her no-mess decluttering video, I can’t remember if it’s been linked here. But you mentioned wanting to do little declutters at a time and not drag everything out of a space. I think it’d be perfect for you. I’ll go grab a link in case you haven’t seen it. Here it is. I’ve watched some of her videos and listened to the book. I think she has some good points but some times her videos irritate me for some reason. I think they are kind of scattered or not to the point? But I will try to listen to that one tomorrow and reacquaint myself with her method. I got the idea a few weeks ago from the minimal mom. I think the video was 30 things to declutter in 30 minutes or something like that. I like that method when I’m short on time or just want to make use of those 15 min intervals. But I also don’t think it is making enough of a visual change for me overall when I’m not focusing ok one room. Doing 15 min tasks in one room throughout the week will work best for me, I think. What I like about her method though is that nothing looks worse after you start which tends to be my biggest problem with decluttering. I also like that she encourages people to start with the most visible areas where whatever time spent will produce the greatest impact. My usual tendency is to start with something like a closet, cabinet or drawer which of course produces no visual impact so the room itself still looks like a bomb went off. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Right now I am going through jewelry and not sure what to keep. Are we talking good jewelry here or just costume pieces? For the costume pieces, unless you are still madly in love with it I would donate it. I still have costume pieces from the 80s that I really like and are actually back in style! DD has even commandeered some of it! I also have pieces of good jewelry that I'll never wear again but don't get rid of it because they were gifts from DH. He's more sentimental than I am. Excess jewelry is the least of my problems with decluttering in that it doesn't take up a lot of room so I just keep it stored away in a jewelry box. Run a price check on it to see what the value is, especially on the lens. I had gathered up all my SLR and DSLR cameras and lens last year to sell, but got sidetracked with DH's health issues. When I ran comps I discovered that the lens were worth the most. I just uncovered them this week in the guest room so will take care of that in the next couple of weeks. There is a camera store locally that buys used equipment so I plan to take it all there. Selling it on my own might net a bit more money but I don't want to deal with it and am willing to take a bit less. If you have any camera stores locally I would check there first.

I was going to list a few more things on the Buy Nothing group and ended up having other things I needed to do, but that’s going to be on my to do list for this week. But I saw someone looking for things for a high school coffee shop that a teacher is helping to set up, and one of the things I was going to post was a stainless steel coffee carafe so I responded and asked if they could use it and the answer was yes, so it’s out on the porch waiting for pickup right now. Oh! I also dropped off a big box of clothes for donation and have another bag of stuff for DD’s friend at the lake cabin if she wants it. If not, I’ll donate that too. It kills me though to give away clothes that are basically brand new because DD just didn’t like them. 🙄 I also asked DH about the rest of the unsold toys and he said the listing had likely expired, so he relisted them on Marketplace. If they don’t sell in this cycle it will be time for them to be donated. We really want to pull out the carpet in that room (and in the family room) in the spring so the stuff needs to go.

I got my grandson to go through his closet and purge anything that doesn't fit or he isn't going to wear. Bonus win - he went through his dresser, too! I had hoped to convince him to do that another day.
We are donating 2 full bags of clothes, plus tossed 1/2 bag of worn out items.

I took another load of stuff over to Salvation Army. Basically filled the trunk. Mist if it was DS’ stuff but I had some clothes and books as well as some Christmas stuff. Happy to have it gone. Almost didn’t bother but then decided I wanted it gone. Bit by bit getting rid of stuff. Very little baby steps but progress is progress.

Do you love it and just have nothing to wear with it? That can be fixed. But if you don’t love it, if putting it on won’t complete an outfit or put a smile on your face then personally, I’d get rid of it. I like the idea of getting it down to your jewelry armoire, that’s your space and once you have too much for that space something needs to go. Eta: iamkristinl16 I see I’m too late, yay I agree, the lens is more likely to be worth money because it will fit on a DSLR, we were actually going through the same things today and decided to keep the lenses because I do want a DSLR and they’re great lenses. Check out eBay and call a couple of local pawn shops if you’re interested in selling it yours. Maybe your boys can ask at school if the A/V club can use it. What I like about her method though is that nothing looks worse after you start which tends to be my biggest problem with decluttering. But yeah, we are just finishing up clearing the dining room table and buffet from the bomb I’ve been detonating by using them as surfaces to declutter some items from the garage and downstairs. We don’t have kids or pets so it hasn’t affected the functionality of our space, just looks messy. But I definitely look forward to finishing up.

We had a pretty productive evening. Finished going through the entertainment center. Did the entry closet (don’t be too impressed it’s only 2-3 feet wide ) and got rid of several things that I knew I should get rid of the last couple of rounds but kept convincing myself we’d use. We didn’t, they’re gone. If I have a funeral to go to no one will be offended if I have to wear a very muted purple knit wrap instead of a black one. Also, I actually took my reusable bags out of their holder and found several beneath the neatly folded ones that we obviously haven’t needed. Went through our serving pieces and utensils, and my BFF will be taking a lot of utensils and a few bowls home the next time I see her. Cleaned out beneath our kitchen sink and even did a task we’ve been meaning to do for years, it took forever. And then when all was said and done, it didn’t work!!! So, we’ll revisit it tomorrow, DH was done and I can’t roll around on the floor like he can. Oh, and went through part of DH’s inside workout room and found a few things we were no longer using. So between the above work tonight, what we’ve been working on the past couple of weeks, and the odds and ends we decide we no longer want as we go through our day to day life, we filled my mid-sized SUV about 3/4ths full of items for DH’s skilled nursing facility, the animal shelter, Goodwill, and friends and family. So excited about that, especially because as I’ve said, I thought we were at the maintenance phase! The declutter calendar tasks will take us back to the bedroom this week, see you tomorrow with that. iamkristinl16 you are a couple of steps ahead!

So in all sincerity, go you for showing him! Side note: how did I not know he lived with you, is this fairly new or am I spectacularly unobservant? You all are doing wonderful!
Last trash day my kid asked to toss a largish ripped pillowpet that he received 8 years ago. Gone!
This week a large bag of costume & make pretend stuff will leave the house. It's been several years since the kids played with it, so I asked & they were fine with it going. The costumes don't fit anymore anyway (geared towards preschoolers). They're getting trashed because everything went through several kids, was mostly bought second hand, and is definitely worse for the wear.
Yesterday I did a gift card declutter. Sounds weird, right? But there were seven cards sitting in the cabinet for a long time. Checked the balance on all of them online. Five had $0 balance. Two had some money on them. Cut up the zero balance, wrote the balance of the other two on Post It notes & stuck them to the cards. I'll use the cards this week.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar:
Clear off the left side of your dresser top.
If you don’t have a dresser, or the top is clear work on a clothing drawer or two. Start easy on items with no emotional attachment or that require little thought like socks, underwear, bras, pajamas.

Week 4 Master Bedroom and Master Bedroom Closets- First. let’s do what we did in the living room. All draperies or curtains taken down and washed or dry cleaned (or at least vacuumed). Do the same with your bedspread. While windows are bare, clean blinds and glass. Clear off those stacks and piles on and around your dresser/chest of drawers. Now, dump each drawer, one at a time, or all at the same time into a central location. Vacuum the drawers if necessary. Go through and sort items. Decide what you want to have in the dresser drawers and put only those items back. use the 4 box method to ort the remaining items. If you haven’t worn an item in a year, ask yourself if you will wear it within the next year. if no then get rid of it! (Garage sale, donate to the needy or someone you know will wear it, or THROW IT OUT!) Do similar with items other than clothing that you find along the way. How about those worn undergarments?? Get rid of them and treat yourself to new! You may want to invest in, or make dividers for some of these types of articles. How about the jewelry box? Time to go through & inventory. Might want to give some that you don’t wear to your kids to play, and leave room for your better items. Have you checked under the bed yet? Better do so! There could be shoes, books, and other items that have long since been forgotten. You might want to consider getting storage containers for use under there for your off-season clothing. Now you’re ready for the closet! Use the same technique as for drawers: take everything out of the closet and pile in a central location. Decide what you what to store where in the closet! Then use the 4 box method as you consider each thing you removed from the closet before you put items into the closet! For shoes, try on all pairs if you can’t wear them now, chances are you never will. Get rid of them! And if you never really felt comfortable in a certain pair, find a friend who would. Come on now, do you really need to keep the old maternity clothes?? Would anyone else want them? If so, give them away, if not throw them away! Okay now, get ready to fill the closet with things you need and love. Have you changed the linens on the bed? Turn the mattress first, so you won’t “wear” a valley in it! Throw the pillows into the dryer to fluff, and pull out all the dust they collect also. Time to dust and clean off all the furniture with your favorite product. Don’t forget the TV screen & any mirrors you may have. Everyone has different things in their bedrooms which are individual to your household. Take a good look around and see if there is anything we left out. Vacuum the floor of the room and the closet! List time: do you need new hangers? Have you replaced winter clothes for summer clothes? Have you found that necklace that fell behind the dresser last year? Did you check the ceiling fan, light fixtures & air vents? Do you need a new mattress pad? or mattress cover? We should be finished! What an adventure!

I tackled the drawers on one side of my kitchen this morning - tossed some worn out dishrags and the leftover cookie frosting (why were we saving that?) and pulled 6 items to donate. I'll tackle the drawers on the other side in a bit I also deep cleaned the hall bath - I did peek in the drawers and under the sink but I've been doing a good job maintaining them - one drawer has feminine products and the other has the flea comb for the cats - underneath is a old waste basket with cleaning rags (oh, maybe I should go through that - I'll do it when the floor's dry), a plastic tub with cleaning supplies, and spare TP.

I always open the drawer or door when I walk by my newly decluttered/organized spaces and just breathe deep and smile And if it’s a drawer or closet that causes issues every time you enter them, while your efforts might not have much of a visual effect, you could immediately benefit from the improved functionality of the space. I can totally understand how you feel about decluttered drawers. I was specifically responding to the comment iamkristinl16 made about not seeing or feeling progress after working in a space, and totally relating to that because of the way I typically would attack those spaces myself. I had a pretty good mental shift after reading the book by Dana White who does things in a totally opposite manner. After reading that and watching a few of her videos, it definitely changed how I would think about tackling a similar project now. Case in point, we have a media center in our family room that I really need to find some time to go through. It has multiple open shelves, a couple drawers and a couple cabinets with doors. For whatever reason that even I can’t pinpoint, in the past I would have been most likely to tackle the drawers and cabinets first, pulling EVERYTHING out of them, reorganizing stuff and putting things back. At the end of the day, not only would the visible shelves still look like hell because they were never even touched, but now there’s ALSO a pile of crap in the middle of the room that came out of the drawers and cabinets making the whole room look worse! 🤦🏻‍♀️ When I do get to the point of working on it now, you can bet that I’m going to take on the visible parts *first* because it will make the much bigger visual impact on the look of the space, especially to visitors who don’t live here and who aren’t house blind to the mess.

underneath is a old waste basket with cleaning rags (oh, maybe I should go through that - I'll do it when the floor's dry) and done - I found some rags that had more holes than not and they have left. I also got rid of the sponges - we don't ever use sponges so why did I have a half-dozen? Straightened out the pantry - combined the TWO open boxes of cocoa krispies (sigh) and tossed the three bags of potato chips that had less than a serving between them (sighs again). Clean out the cabinets above the washer and dryer - didn't get rid of anything but I put an open plastic shoe box in to corral the mop-heads. waiting for the hallway floor to dry and I'll reassemble the hall and deal with the cabinets on the other side. When I do get to the point of working on it now, you can bet that I’m going to take on the visible parts *first* because it will make the much bigger visual impact on the look of the space, especially to visitors who don’t live here and who aren’t house blind to the mess. I think this is smart especially if it encourages by showing visible progress. I'm more at the maintenance stage in most areas so hidden storage tends to be my focus because I tend to deal with any messes/clutter that is visible on more regular basis. That said...surfaces in my dining room need work (looks hard at DD and DH who cleared the table last night before dinner- and several previous nights - onto the sideboards)

Went through the 30" suitcase I brought back from storage. Emptied it and lined up 6 pairs of boots for DH to look at. Also found one of DD's baby blankets (in the was now) and a luggage strap we'd been looking for. All the boots are going to be donated to the mission this afternoon, along with a lot of dress shirts and pants (an urgent need currently in XXL and larger sizes) and some nicer casual shirts. That takes care of going through DH's wardrobe! The suitcase is in the donation pile in the foyer. The pile is large enough that I'll send it with the housekeeper this week. Her mom takes a lot of it and ships to family and friends in Guatemala. ETA: There are still 2 suits (each with 2 pairs of pants) to donate but I will take those to the men's store where he shops. They are gathering suits for the Suits for Soldiers program. They are given to veterans for job interviews. My understanding is that they help with fitting those suits when given out.

I am packing up to head home from Mayo, and my mother makes me look like a minimalist. I tried to not get her to pack so much on the way here, which just made her mad, and she bought a ton of stuff here. I have no idea how I will make it all fit in her Audi Q7 - we also have 5 dogs to go in as well. 🤦‍♀️
