Grand Cleaning Plan We're in the Entry/Foyer this week - Use the basic remove/clean/replace policy for those items which are wall-hung. Consider how the area looks when a visitor enters your home. Again if it doesn’t belong there, remove it! If you have a chair or rack that welcomes clutter, consider moving it until everyone breaks the habit of just dropping everything off in the foyer. The next time you enter the front door after being away a few hours, look around and sniff around just like you were in a strange house. Our homes can develop “houseatosis”. There are a great many air freshener products and potpourri assortments on the market today, use one if you need it!! Don’t forget to clean out the umbrella stand, if you have one. If you don’t, do you need one? Do you have a rug or maybe carpeting in this area? Do a thorough job of vacuuming it. you’ll be pleased. Do you have a window in your front door, or “side lights” which could use bit of glass cleaner? Don’t forget to thoroughly dust/wash front door itself, and also the baseboards in the area. Plan a place for everything which needs to be kept near the front door and keep it there! Everything else goes! Now, do you need to go back and spend time on last week’s project? If not, could you choose another declutter project that would enhance the beauty of your home? Choose something close to the entry or living room to help give that feeling of flow between organized rooms. like smiles and yawns, organization is contagious! holidaygrandplan.com/cleaning-grand-plan/

Rearranged the laundry cupboard to fit in my new portable carpet cleaner - yay! Decided to donate a decorative bowl set I received for my 21st - just not my style so I never pull it out of the cupboard, I want someone else who loves it to have it! Went through the recipe books and loose recipes and got rid of three books and a handful of old clippings. Opened packets of new socks and underwear and actually put them in my drawer 😅 they’ve been in my room for two months now unopened. Threw out the bra with the underwire that was digging into me.

Grand Cleaning Plan We're in the Entry/Foyer this week I tackled the foyer today. Cleaned the window inside and out. Cleaned the door. Dusted and wiped down the walls. Dusted the art. Swept the (carpeted) stairs - the straw broom gets into the corners and grabs pet fur the vacuum seems to miss. Polished the banister. Oiled the table. Cleaned the boot tray. Dusted the baseboards. Swept and mopped. I also went back and revisited week 1 (outside entryway) - swept the stoop and swept the cobwebs etc... off the overhang. DH trimmed the azalea bushes that border the house on the front and sides last week and he cleaned off the path afterwards. And DD17 mowed. That's about it for kerb appeal here, lol. I'm not a gardener. Haven't tackled the living room yet but will get to it. I did steam clean the carpet over the weekend...and then dh spilled a full cup of iced tea and the cat had another mishap...so it'll be cleaned again today as well (already been spotcleaned but...)

I finally got the boxes of donations dropped off at Goodwill today. We had several different fiascos in the home when getting the new appliances so I am trying to get things put back together. Also did a quick run through of the garage to get rid of some boxes and put a few other things away in a better spot (things that get stuffed in the corner during winter, etc) but we need to do a better run through. My son also went through his clothes and got rid of a bag. Some minor progress. DH ordered another garbage bin so we have more space for trash when going through things.

I feel like such a slacker reading how productive you’ve all been! Way to go everybody! Last week I managed to get the rest of my cookie cutters put away in the new boxes and into the cabinet because I knew I was going to need the area cleaned up this week for some wedding cookies I need to do. But that was about as far as I got. This week will be hectic with doing those cookies and getting all of DD’s stuff together for camp so I know I won’t have time to work on anything else.

Ds is letting me declutter the large obnoxious toy that takes up half his room that he never plays with - YES!!! That's a huge win! Says the woman with 3 shoe boxes of various rocks in her garage that belong to her 36 year old (who moved out 10 years ago)!

Found some old R2D2 pajama pants that are way too big and threw both pairs away because I had forgotten the dogs had made huge rips in them. 😭
Also found two cloth face masks and pitched those.
Added a tshirt from a 5K that I walked 9 years ago to the donate pile, along with a piece of home decor from TJ Maxx.
Slowly chipping away!
Edited to add: added another 2 pairs of pajama pants to the donate pile, along with a button down pajama shirt. Also tossed a mask I got from an awful job!

I haven't actively decluttered in the house in the past week, but have been working in the garden.
Yesterday I used the chipper on a pile of sticks and twigs, adding the chips to the compost.
This week is the last of the school year, and I'm really looking forward to cleaning out the kids' school stuff, trashing so much, and reorganizing new supplies for what works best for us. Every year it gets a little better, but we just aren't there yet.
I can't wait to do a final school uniform wash, and put them away. It'll halve my laundry tasks for the summer. I'm still holding outgrown uniforms for the PTA.

I went through a couple boxes of stuff and threw away a bunch of sheet music from a concert I never sang in 10 years ago and some newspapers that were older than I am (the day it snowed in Miami in 1977, the day after the snow, the day Reagan was elected, and the day the Iran Contra hostages were released). NO idea how those came into my possession!
Also added some more clothes to the donate pile. I have bought a few things recently in size L, as some of my XL items are looking a bit sloppy and I'm not at a medium yet (for some reason, I bought a ton of stuff in medium in 2019 and I still have the items). For the too small clothes, they are in a bin until I fit into them. Fortunately, I don't think of them often, so I don't have any hangups about the clothes not fitting and making me feel bad.
I found a stash of "collector" plates - mostly Christmas Barbie ones and a couple others (Royal Doulton maybe?). They don't appear to have much value on Ebay, so I don't know why I have a hang up about letting them go. I don't care for them, I won't display them, and they take up space. I do know I need to sneak them out of the house so my mother doesn't see them leave. I doubt she remembers we have them, but she'd become fixated on them if she saw them again.
We have a bunch of old "collector" Barbies in bins in the storage unit - the dolls are still in the original boxes! Since it is highly unlikely I will ever have kids of my own, I won't ever be able to pass them down. I have one niece who is 8.5, but I don't think she plays with Barbies, and I doubt my brothers will have any more children. I'd love nothing more than to donate them to a women's shelter or to kids in foster care, but I doubt my mom would go for it. She does know about these dolls, so I have to tread carefully (Alzheimer’s is a real pain in this regard). I might find a place that will take them and try to talk her into giving them to kids who have very little and would enjoy them - she keeps stalling on stuff to donate because she knows people who could "use" them, but she won't tell me who to give them to. I can't just take it over, because it's one more example of where she's losing control and it makes life very difficult when she gets upset about stuff like that.

I ripped out everything hanging on the lower bar on my closet (about 4 ft of length) and went through all the clothes.. many to give away, some to put back, one shirt to toss.
so right now I have a pile of hangers, put two bags of clothes in spare room, and some shirts for dh to decide to keep or not. my dd and her wife are going to go through my old clothes when they visit in august.. so at that point, I will donate the rest after they take their pick.
now I can see the shirts that actually fit me..

We were on vacation the past week but before we left I decluttered my van. The amount of crap that had accumulated in the center console was unreal. Also discovered that DS had been hoarding empty juice boxes in a back seat compartment. The next few days will just be catching up from being gone. Health issues just keep getting in my way.

It’s been awhile since I posted. My Pom passed away in my lap a month ago. Still struggling. Though, my health has taken a turn for the better.
Still can’t bring myself to vacuum under my bed. He liked to lay under there and on the couch in the living room. Or, wherever I was.
In the last two weeks, I have been working on cleaning out the garage where I park my car. Took a load of cardboard to recycling. Have another ready to go. Found homes for a child’s folding chair, 2 good reusable bags, 3 tennis rackets. Tossed the crappy reusable bags from the stores. The red ones showed how badly they were disintegrating.
Had a couple of bags of styrofoam and other packing material that DH carted to his garage, which means they probably won’t see the trash truck anytime soon.
Discovered a box Christmas lights with a note that they did not work and dated 2004. There has been a box of non-working Christmas lights in the garage for 20 years! In addition, there are 6 to 8 strands of Christmas lights that only partially work. DH protested throwing them out. Flat out asked him if he were going to sit down and work at finding what was not working to fix them. No. Which means he thought I was doing it. No. They are slated for the trash. I have a small pile which will be used to fill the trash bags when there is room.
Down another shoe box or two of paperwork. Started on a new one yesterday. Really happy with the progress in that direction.
The garage is still a work in progress. Should have finished it yesterday. But, the cat barfed on my bed. So, there was a fair amount of laundry to be done and I cleaned the house.
Had my first full week at work, this past week. Going to do the modified schedule this week. It tired me out considerably. Still, I was able to walk the puppy before and after work.
Finally hopeful that I can return to something resembling life.

Grand Cleaning PLan
It's Master Bedroom and Master Bedroom Closet Week- First. let’s do what we did in the living room. All draperies or curtains taken down and washed or dry cleaned (or at least vacuumed). Do the same with your bedspread. While windows are bare, clean blinds and glass. Clear off those stacks and piles on and around your dresser/chest of drawers. Now, dump each drawer, one at a time, or all at the same time into a central location. Vacuum the drawers if necessary. Go through and sort items. Decide what you want to have in the dresser drawers and put only those items back. use the 4 box method to ort the remaining items. If you haven’t worn an item in a year, ask yourself if you will wear it within the next year. if no then get rid of it! (Garage sale, donate to the needy or someone you know will wear it, or THROW IT OUT!) Do similar with items other than clothing that you find along the way. How about those worn undergarments?? Get rid of them and treat yourself to new! You may want to invest in, or make dividers for some of these types of articles. How about the jewelry box? Time to go through & inventory. Might want to give some that you don’t wear to your kids to play, and leave room for your better items. Have you checked under the bed yet? Better do so! There could be shoes, books, and other items that have long since been forgotten. You might want to consider getting storage containers for use under there for your off-season clothing. Now you’re ready for the closet! Use the same technique as for drawers: take everything out of the closet and pile in a central location. Decide what you what to store where in the closet! Then use the 4 box method as you consider each thing you removed from the closet before you put items into the closet! For shoes, try on all pairs if you can’t wear them now, chances are you never will. Get rid of them! And if you never really felt comfortable in a certain pair, find a friend who would. Come on now, do you really need to keep the old maternity clothes?? Would anyone else want them? If so, give them away, if not throw them away! Okay now, get ready to fill the closet with things you need and love. Have you changed the linens on the bed? Turn the mattress first, so you won’t “wear” a valley in it! Throw the pillows into the dryer to fluff, and pull out all the dust they collect also. Time to dust and clean off all the furniture with your favorite product. Don’t forget the TV screen & any mirrors you may have. Everyone has different things in their bedrooms which are individual to your household. Take a good look around and see if there is anything we left out. Vacuum the floor of the room and the closet! List time: do you need new hangers? Have you replaced winter clothes for summer clothes? Have you found that necklace that fell behind the dresser last year? Did you check the ceiling fan, light fixtures & air vents? Do you need a new mattress pad? or mattress cover? We should be finished! What an adventure!

Took recycling off the other day.
This week is going to be hectic. (Jury duty, Physical therapy, loose ends on screenings) So I may not get a ton done.
Going to start prepping like I will have surgery in a few months so I want to tackle my shed and make sure I get stuff cleaned and priced for booths for my Dad to stock while I can't lift.

mich5481 Reading about your Barbie problem reminded me of a video my DH sent to me last weekend. This lady and her husband would pick decor items they were tired of and wanted to declutter, and would secretly place the items in the home of a family member or friend while they were visiting! They had gotten rid of a bunch of stuff that way and only ONE PERSON noticed, LOL! Honestly, it’s quite a funny solution. 🤣 www.facebook.com/reel/1156595995580609?fs=e&s=TIeQ9V

Okay, finally had a few minutes today to breathe now that school is out, the kid is at band camp and there’s nothing more important on the schedule for today. SO! I boxed up 68, yes SIXTY EIGHT!!! Short sleeve t-shirts to donate to the nice place plus another box of shoes and bottoms. I went through my other shoes and tossed a pair of worn out slippers, put two other pairs of barely worn athletic shoes in DD’s room for her to look at before adding them to a donation box and decided another pair of barely worn athletic shoes and a pair of new flip flops can go to the lake cabin to live. Threw out a pair of pajama bottoms that had crunchy elastic and a pair of old paint stained shorts that no longer fit. Boxed up another probably 20 old t-shirts with slogans on them that the nice donation place won’t take for Salvation Army. (My sister was a house painter and she would often go to places like that to buy t-shirts like that cheap to wear to work and when they were so paint splattered and stained etc. she would toss them and go get more.) The local donation place only takes in stuff on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so that’s as far as that got for today, but at least it’s all boxed up and ready to toss in the car trunk at a moment’s notice. Pretty good for about 45 minutes work, and my closet is feeling a little less cluttered too. I’ll call it a win for today. Maybe this afternoon I’ll start tackling the desk DD used to use in the office next. There’s a ton of stuff she will need to go through but I could do the initial sort into school supplies she might be able to use next year, stuff that’s just recycling/trash, random stuff she might want but needs to look at (can go in a box), stuff I want to keep for her scrapbook (which will go in a tote in my studio with all the other saved school stuff), and stuff that should really go somewhere else. I’d like to get rid of the desk too.

I am going tomorrow!! I'm doing the other half of the closet when he is gone sunday into monday --but it is mostly my stuff. I also emptied three bags I brought back from mother in law's house.. and organized some more stuff in my spare room. dh gave me the go ahead and find contractors for house remodel.. I will look in july after I clear out some more stuff. we will have to move out for a year or two.

I need to transform our house.. we only have basement 1/2 area under house.. want to bring in small equipment, dig out to back of house, redo three sides of the foundation, new furnace, new electrical, maybe solar, new kitchen, redo small bathroom, refinish floors, new windows, add new bedroom and maybe new bathroom in basement. redo stairs to basement,
and some other little stuff. I'm on a hillside.. so originally, the back half of the house had a slab foundation.. previous owner broke that. and our basement has water intrusion and always have had it. it also holds the space to park a car...right now I have under a foot clearance if you combine two sides of clearance.
in sf, it pays to remodel and not to move. and our house has cool old features, an ocean view and lots of parking on street. and the taxes are based on what we paid for the house. 40 yrs ago. with the permitting and building chaos in sf, projects take a long long time.

Went clothes shopping today (once a year event if that for me 🤣) and got two replacement shirts, two pairs of leggings and three tank tops. I pretty much buy the exact same clothes to replace the ones I have but I like what I like… I’m definitely a clothing minimalist… or should I say I have a capsule wardrobe? Do tracksuits count? Anyway, buying those items means I can get rid of all the current shirts and pants with holes and stains on them. Also decluttered two work out shirts - haven’t done that in a while, when I restart I’ll buy new ones as the ones I had were well loved.

so does it count if dh looked at the pile I wish him to get rid of? he said he would tackle it another day.. in the near future.
I count it as progress. I am getting out the rest of stuff in closet tomorrow and go through the pile. the small pile of clothes to go so far is in front hall way.. want to finish the rest of closet before I go to good will.

I've been reading some books and then adding them to the donate pile. In the past two days, I've completed such 80s teen/preteen tearjerkers as "I Never Got to Say Good-bye," "There's No Cure," and "Is Chelsea Going Blind?" It's like after-school specials in literary form!
I've also gone through a couple boxes, and got my mom to add some of her clothes and household items to the donate pile. Next step is to get that pile out of the house!

Grand Cleaning PLan
Master Bath week0 Go through the medicine chest. Do you really store medicine in here? It is not a good idea to store your medications here as the steam and heat of the showers can affect them. Consider finding a new place. While you rearrange them, throw away the horrible tasting stuff that you do not use and the expired items. Check your first aid supplies. Do you have enough Peroxide, band-aids, gauze pads, antibacterial ointment? Find a printable first-aid checklist here. Just look at those towels! Are they torn? In need of replacement? You needed some new rags anyway! Put it on your list to replace. Reorganize the ones you have. Clean off handles, knobs, light switches. Does anything need replacing? How about the bathroom mat or carpet? Does it need some spot remover while you go on? Does it need to be replaced? Clean from high to low. Take down the curtains or blinds and clean them. Vacuum the screens in the windows. Clean the windowsill and wash any knickknacks. Clean the entire bowl. Spray with a good disinfectant. How is your bowl brush? Does it need replacing? A sponge brush works better than a bristle brush here. Polish all the metal fixtures make them gleam. Get around the bowl and clean spots you have not seen in a while! Open the window while you spray a good mold remover if you need to. Scour sinks and bathtubs, and showers. Do you need a new soap dish? A decorative hand soap dispenser? Get under the sink. Look at those three bottles of hair spray. Do you need and use all that stuff under there? Consider purchasing some under the cabinet organizers to give you more storage space and allow you to get things easier. Wipe out the bottom of the cabinet. Don’t stop there. Time to get the drawers now too. Throw away what you have not used. Does the shower curtain need replacing? Is it really moldy? Wash out the wastebasket and let it sanitize. The bathroom scale hasn’t been scrubbed in a while. Do it now! Get the baseboards and wipe them down, spray the tile with a good tile cleaner while you are doing the baseboard then wipe the tile down after it had a chance to sit. Take note and replace, repair all items that need attention.

For the last couple of months, a fellow volunteer and I have been trying to bring some order to the "donation room" at our local women's emergency shelter. This is the place that any clothing donations come and are sorted and stored by size (and sometimes season) for women to 'shop' for themselves and their kids--lots have had to flee their homes with literally only the clothes on their backs. I'm not sure how long they were without volunteer help for this room, but things were a bit of a hot mess when we began, and we've been making really good progress sorting and purging (an aside: please don't send your grandma's clothes to the women's shelter when she moves into a home, even if they are in 'great shape' ... there are statistically zero senior citizens coming in as clients!). The problem that we're running into is that the shelter is a bit chaotic in terms of staffing, and retaining staff, and having well defined roles for everyone! Because the donation room is adjacent to the childcare/playroom, the childcare provider is often the person who unlocks doors for us, and I think that over the decade or so that she's been there, she's been the consistent staff member in that area of the building. So, she kind of unofficially has made herself 'in charge' of the donation room. Unfortunately, what she's been telling us doesn't always align with what the admin assistant or the volunteer coordinator (who was only there last month, the job is now vacant again) or the crisis team have been saying. This week, we finally sorted our way to the very back corner of the room--yay, us!--and discovered four large plastic bins full of socks ... new WalMart socks, in packages ... ugly white and black gym socks that go halfway to your knees ... all in adult men's sizes ... In theory, the shelter is open to men fleeing domestic violence, but there has been maybe one male or male-identifying person in the last decade (apart from minor children), so we decided that we would pack up the men's socks and the surplus of women's socks and donate them to a local homeless shelter that has just been on FB asking for socks, specifically, for their clients. The admin assistant thought it was a great idea and was ready to contact the other shelter to arrange pick up/drop off. And then the childcare person had a two day hissy fit about not getting rid of them and storing them because they will need them and they go through socks quickly ... and has taken several bins off to hide somewhere else in the building! All just fine with us, we'll just keeping plugging away at making the room pleasant and usable for clients and workers, but it's probably going to be frustrating to figure out who to listen to and who to ignore! It's sure not the same as decluttering with family members and dynamics, lol! Our bright spot is that the shelter has a new building that is almost done construction and will be ready for occupancy in October. In this building, the 'donation room' is supposed to look more like a shop or boutique, rather than plastic bins on shelves in the furnace room, and it is going to be located right beside the main doors and have windows and easy access for donation drop off and pick up! We're looking forward to making the wardrobe building task much more pleasant for clients!! And hoping the childcare room is on the other side of the building I think in the course of the last two months, we have pulled out at least 50 black garbage bags full of stuff to donated to other charities, and another couple of trash. Next week, we'll start making the bins more specific (separting jeans and yoga/comfy pants, for example), and then hopefully by next month we can get everything labelled with cute labels instead of green painters tape. All the things I wish my dd would do/let me do in her room!

Thank you for your volunteer service. Maybe you'll find the socks in the move!
