He’s an evil little grinch. 😡 I would love to see his ass in court over this. That's literally what he's hoping for. They think it will make Biden look bad if the DOJ slaps Abbott for doing what he says Biden won't or hasn't. It would in MAGA land. I wonder what moderates and independents would think. This seems so clearly horrific to me.

Truthfully I am not sure they even know what a Christian is any more!! I don't even care if they want to be Christian or not. Maybe just try being a decent human being. Yes exactly! There are plenty of decent human beings who are not Christian. I think almost all religions have some version of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". But...these hypocrites claim to be Christian. Doesn't look like any type of Christianity that I see Jesus preaching.

So some updates on the drowned migrants - DPS is claiming that the timeline shows the migrants were already dead by the time BP alerted them. They're trying to claim that Democrats and the media are lying about the whole thing.
But here's the deal - the Rio Grande is not particularly wide in that spot. That's one of the reasons it's a popular crossing. If DPS had been doing their job, they would have seen the migrants struggling in the water before they drowned. At night, they use spotlights to observe and track anyone trying to cross. They prevented BP from doing that job by blocking access to the river for 2.5 miles around there. No one on our side of the river was in a position to see the struggling swimmers except DPS.
So whether anyone actually saw the drowning or not, we will likely never know. But it seems to me that if they didn't see, they weren't doing a very good job of monitoring the area. And if they did see and failed to render aid, they're exactly the monsters they're being made out to be.
The fact that DPS insists on operating in complete privacy and secrecy in that area should be all the indication anyone needs that something bad is going on. They claim to have excluded BP because BP agents were cutting the concertina wire rather than forcing migrants to climb through it. So is DPS making them climb through it or jump back in the river? There is no transparency here. No way to know if laws are being followed or humanitarian aid being rendered.

Thanks MergeMy only 'experience' or 'knowledge' of the Texas DPS is what I have heard and/or seen on the videos showing the DPS standing around hearing the shots while children were being slaughtered.

And Republicans have already decided to impeach Mayorkas www.nytimes.com/2024/01/18/us/politics/mayorkas-house-impeachment-republicans.htmlHouse G.O.P. Winds Down Mayorkas Impeachment Without His Public Testimony House Republicans are racing to charge the homeland security secretary without his in-person testimony or evidence of impeachable offenses.
House Republicans wrapped up impeachment hearings against Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, on Thursday, a little more than a week after the proceedings began, racing to charge him with failing to enforce the nation’s immigration laws.
The Republicans are moving ahead without evidence that Mr. Mayorkas has committed high crimes or misdemeanors, the constitutional standard for impeachment, effectively seeking to remove him for immigration policies they argue have imperiled the American public.
They plan to bring charges against Mr. Mayorkas as early as the end of this month, without having featured testimony from him or any other witness from the Biden administration to publicly answer for his conduct, or a single constitutional expert to support their argument that he is guilty of impeachable offenses.
“This isn’t a real impeachment — it’s a predetermined, preplanned, partisan political stunt,” said Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the senior Democrat on the panel. “You cannot impeach a cabinet secretary because you don’t like a president’s policies,” he added.
heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/january-17-2023-14eIn a letter obtained by Punchbowl News, Green wrote: “Since you continue to decline to come in person, I invite you to submit written testimony for the January 18th hearing record, so that our Committee Members may hear from you directly.”
This evening, an inadvertently circulated internal Republican memo obtained by Rebecca Beitsch of The Hill shows that Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee likely have switched their demand for live testimony to a demand for written answers because they have already committed to impeachment on a tight timeline and cannot wait for the live hearing to be rescheduled.
Green had previously suggested on the Fox News Channel that an impeachment document had already been written even though there had been no impeachment hearings. The memo appears to corroborate that suggestion, saying: “We have scheduled the markup for impeachment articles at 10:00 AM ET on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.”
But now that the Senate appears to have hammered out a bipartisan immigration reform measure, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said this morning: “It’s a complex issue. I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform, because we know how complicated that is.” After a meeting at the White House today with President Biden, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, and committee heads, Johnson still refused to put the proposed deal up for a vote in the House.
Johnson is caught between U.S. national security and Trump. On the Fox News Channel tonight, Laura Ingraham told Johnson she had just gotten off a phone call with Trump and Trump had told her that he was against the immigration deal and had urged Johnson to oppose it. “He…was extremely adamant about it,” she said. Johnson agreed and said that he and Trump had been “talking about this pretty frequently.”
Trump needs the issue of immigration to whip up his base for the 2024 election.

Exactly this. If the border issue is a crisis as they say, Republicans should be chomping at the bit to pass legislation to help. If it’s not a crisis and can wait, what’s all the blather about?

Sorry, they're showing up on my Mac book Moskowitz at the hearing Congressman @jaredemoskowitz says it best in the video below.Yes, we have issues at the border. No, these issues aren’t new to the Biden Administration. Yes, more people are attempting to come across the border now than under previous administrations, but the borders aren't more "open" now, except for Biden ending the harsh "remain in Mexico policy" and COVID restrictions expiring.eta - sorry I tried to find a more neutral source with a transcript of his testimony, but this was all I could find with a quick search www.meidastouch.com/news/rep-moskowitz-rips-republicans-for-playing-politics-with-immigration-reformToday, during a Congressional hearing, Moskowitz put the Republican Party's hypocrisy on fully display attacking them for failing to pass immigration reform prior to President Biden's election. Moskowitz called out Republicans for pretending that everything was perfect prior to President Biden's election, even noting that during Obama's presidency, more individuals were deported than during Trump's presidency. Moskowitz used these statistics to show that the border crisis was one that has lasted for years. Watch for yourself:Moskowitz's statement continued to highlight how Speaker Mike Johnson was caught on a recording stating that Congress cannot touch immigration until after the 2024 election. Additionally, Republican Congressman Troy Nehls stated that he refused to do anything on the border out of fears that it would give President Biden a "win." Moskowitz even noted how Senate Republicans are willing to move forward with immigration reform yet members of the House refuse to act. Watch for yourself:
To put the GOP's hypocrisy into perspective, Moskowitz notes that Republicans in the Senate and the House do not work with one another. Each GOP caucus pushes legislation without regard for the other one, celebrating these false accomplishments, yet failing to act for the American people. For example, Moskowitz highlighted part of HR2, a bill put forth in the House that could, if enacted, have prevented Jewish people escaping the Holocaust from entering the country. Watch for yourself:
There are video clips of her testimony to go with them, but this is the text from the Crockett ones 1) I shouldn’t have looked 👀 to see why syphilis is trending 😩.
2) I showed up to committee ready to discuss the horrific deaths of a mother & her children this past weekend at the Texas Border. Seems relevant to a hearing on the border right?
3) My colleague decided to curse at me for I guess having the audacity to speak on their hypocrisy. MAGA won’t have anything to say about this behavior… I’m sure he won’t be called ghetto or whatever other racist nonsense they always say.
Crockett: President Biden has tried to give our border agents 100 new cutting edge inspection devices and add 1000 additional law enforcement personnel. Republicans obstructed that request. Honestly, I can't tell if y'all are for anything other than obstruction and cruelty.

This has nothing to do with Texas or immigrants, but with my suggestion above that churches should be stepping up to house immigrants. Apparently Republican local officials would be happy to charge pastors who would do this, as they charged this pastor who sheltered the homeless during freezing temps in Ohio. www.commondreams.org/news/ohio-pastorI checked election results for Williams Co, Ohio, where this town is located, and it went +50 for Trump in 2020. Republican Jesus is pleased. 🙄

Can anyone imagine what immigrants from Central/South America face from the freezing weather that we are having. Certainly bad enough for the locals, but those from much warmer countries. Here is an Evangelical Pastor doing what the Bible says to do and he is punished. He is doing the right thing! I'm with him!!!

I woke up angry about this again. People keep asking what we’re going to do with all the migrants who come. My thought is that every church, synagogue, and mosque that exists tax free in this country at our expense should be taking in asylum seekers and caring for them until they can be employed and placed in more permanent housing. The rationale behind not taxing houses of worship has long been that these are service institutions that help the community. But here in Texas at least, many are giant palaces of wealth and privilege that pay no property tax. Their pastors are allowed to live in mansions without paying property taxes, too. I can’t find the article right now but an investigative reporter here recently showed that Texas loses billions in tax revenue in allowing these exemptions, which the rest of us must then make up. Time to pay it forward to these human beings in need. Here's how well that works. Grrrrr....

maybe a small victory for the Biden administration? www.nytimes.com/2024/01/22/us/politics/supreme-court-texas-border-barbed-wire.htmlSupreme Court Backs Biden for Now in Dispute With Texas Over Border BarrierThe Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration on Monday in a dispute over a concertina-wire barrier erected by Texas along the Mexican border. The justices temporarily lifted an appeals court’s ruling that had generally prohibited federal officials from removing the wire.
The Supreme Court’s brief order gave no reasons, which is typical when the justices act on emergency applications. The vote was 5 to 4, with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joining the court’s three liberal members to form a majority.

I do, too, but it's not like he would have been able to do anything. The lege is so heavily gerrymandered to the right that a Democratic governor would have very little power to get his agenda passed. At least we wouldn't have had this ridiculous political stunt at the border, though. That would be something.

opening a church building to the homeless is a complex issue.. insurance, staffing, suitable spaces. some church groups may be better at getting out food and supplies to the population... banding with other churches and so on. it works better also if the city had done some planning in the fall to give time for planning, coordination, etc.

I'm sure that Jesus would have wanted those churches to look out for themselves first. Let me go find that Bible passage that says "unless there might be a liability issue or it's an inconvenient use of the space."

But this has been an issue for years, how many years do they need to plan? As for the insurance and staffing, they can use the money they don’t pay in taxes if they can’t get enough volunteers.

Republicans are only interested in the border as an election issue and getting revenge for impeaching Trump, they're not actually interested in solving problems. Instead of negotiating or working on a border deal, this is what they're doing. They invited Mayorkas to testify but instead of waiting until he's available, they're rushing forward with this ridiculous impeachment. This has been their plan all along. www.npr.org/2024/01/28/1227459949/house-gop-impeachment-articles-homeland-security-mayorkas-border-immigrationHouse GOP releases impeachment articles in bid to oust Homeland Security's Mayorkas
The House Committee on Homeland Security on Sunday released draft articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
In its 20-page resolution, the Republican-led committee accuses Mayorkas of high crimes and misdemeanors, including "willfully" disregarding immigration law.
The two articles accuse Mayorkas of "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law" for failing to manage the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border and "breach of public trust."
Democrats on the committee and DHS are calling the articles a "sham."
Ranking member Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., accused Republicans of abusing their impeachment power to "score political points."
"Republicans don't actually want to work towards bipartisan solutions to fix the border – in fact, they have repeatedly sabotaged the Secretary's efforts to secure the border and denied DHS' funding requests," Thompson said in a statement. "Secretary Mayorkas is upholding the law and honoring the public trust as he has throughout his more than 30 years of service to our Nation."
DHS responded Sunday with a memo that called Republicans' effort "a distraction from other vital national security priorities and the work Congress should be doing to actually fix our broken immigration laws."
"They don't want to fix the problem; they want to campaign on it. That's why they have undermined efforts to achieve bipartisan solutions and ignored the facts, legal scholars and experts, and even the Constitution itself in their quest to baselessly impeach Secretary Mayorkas," the memo read.
The committee plans to meet on Tuesday at 10 a.m. to mark up the articles and then could vote sometime time after that. If the articles pass the committee, they then go to the full House for an impeachment vote. It would then be up to the Democratic-led Senate on whether to convict.
