We purchased a large freezer during the pandemic when it was made obvious that our once a week shopping don’t stock anything approach was not always a good idea. Then we tried to stock proteins when they were on sale. But that didn’t last long, prices went up and there was rarely a sale on those we typically purchased.
But the last two weeks our favorites have either been on sale or had coupons, have y’all also seen this in your regions? Ground Turkey and beef haven’t been reduced yet, I’m hoping that comes soon. And I’d love it if sea bass was but it never seems to be. Or scallops. But the chicken breasts and salmon are what we eat the most of and they’ve both had good deals. Along with a few others we eat less frequently like shrimp, some pork cuts and a roast.

I have tracked prices since before the pandemic.
About mid fall turkey and chicken prices dropped a dollar a pound.
I have also seen great sales on both ground turkey (I get Jennie-O) and organic foster farms chicken.
Last cycle Stater Bros has Jennie-O ground turkey for $2.99 a package. So I stocked up. That is for 1 pound each.
I did see eggs go back up though due to the disease of Ca chickens. But with sales it has evened out.
However, canned protein has skyrocketed.
Beans that used to be $1.00-$1.20 are now $2-2.50 a can.
So I wait till 10/$10 sales and stock up.

I bought 3 chuck roasts for 3.99 a pound at Kroger this week and put them in the freezer.
I found 93/7 ground beef at Giant Eagle last week and bought 9 pounds. These were family packs that I divided into 1.5 pond packages because this is what we like for meatloaf and meatballs, and both recipes call for 1.5 pounds.
I have 2 turkey breasts that I got on sale for .99 per pond last fall in the freezer that are getting smoked on the kamado grill during the next two weeks, and I plan to slice and freeze it for hot sandwiches (Kentucky hot brown…mmmmm!).
I haven’t noticed much of an increase in the price of beans lately .buy most of my canned beans at Aldi, and I think they have increased from .59 per can pre-COVID to maybe .79 or .89 now. Percentagewise, that’s a pretty high increase over four years, but they certainly haven’t doubled. I don’t buy organic so I’m not familiar with those prices—they could have increased a lot more.

Oh, I also bought 5 dozen eggs for 1.49 per dozen with a coupon at Kroger last week. Those same eggs we .89-.99 pre-pandemic.
We use a lot of eggs, but Kroger generally has them on sale once a month or has coupons for them often enough that I rarely pay full price.

I just got back from Raley's. I bought a gallon of milk for $2.97, it's usually almost $4. I saw that pork shoulder butts are on sale for $1.97 on a digital coupon so I'll buy one next time I go. I buy an 8-pounder and have the butcher cut it in two for making Tomatillo Pork in the slow cooker. SO good!
Not a protein but fresh asparagus was on sale for $1.97 a lb. It's usually between $4-$5 a lb.

People who can might want to stock up on beef now, if they eat it. I imagine those prices will go up massively with this Texas Panhandle fire.

We eat some for dinner, some for lunch the next day and freeze the rest for a dinner/lunch a few weeks later. We don't use it for sandwiches or tacos or anything. Just add lots of sour cream and a bunch of cilantro. SO good!

I expect there will be some changes here in Texas but since there is the west Texas ranches and north east ranches and those in between, there might not be a major surge. There are other states that produce beef too. Beef is already kind of spendy as fas as ground beef. Chuck and steaks generally don’t shock me. The guys prefer beef, but I have an allergy so I don’t buy as often as they do.

This is where it helps to know where your store gets its meat.
Stater's uses a ranch in CA for their beef.

Beef prices are probably about to rise, at least here in TX with the fires in the panhandle taking so much of the cows. 😢

Ground beef is the one that's still so stubbornly high here that DH remarks on it every week.

We buy chicken breasts when on sale at Costco. We buy the smallest size packages when they are on sale between three and five dollars off. We pull the chicken tenders out and freeze them for another meal. When we shop at Costco we watch the prices carefully. Three weeks ago we bought a four pack of pork tenderloins for a real good deal and froze some. A month ago they had an in-store special on salmon at close to fifty per cent off as they were overstocked.

In the past we’ve typically bought either a 1/4 or a 1/2 a cow at a time, and we have it butchered into the pack sizes we use (ground beef in 1 lb packages, steaks 2 to a package, roasts 3-5 lbs each) and while it costs more all at once it ends up being quite a bit cheaper per pound overall even with the cost of butchering added in. We need to do that again now because we’re getting down there on beef. But of course not everyone can afford to do that, or have the freezer space to store that much at once. We also tend to get our pork that way too and that’s what we got last, so we’ve been eating a lot of pork chops lately.
Because ground beef and steak are almost always the first things we run out of, we sometimes pick up some at Costco Business in bulk and then break it down into how we use it. I think I paid under $4 a pound for 90% lean ground beef last time but it was in a ten pound chub roll that we split up. I was looking something up on Target’s app recently and was floored to see what they were selling a pound of ground beef for. 😳 We never pay that much! We do the same thing with steaks, buy a big slab of sirloin for ~$100 and chop it up into 15-20 steaks and it’s much cheaper that way.
Whole turkeys go on sale around Thanksgiving, so we stock up then and buy the limit at Costco when they do. DH likes to put one on the smoker in the summer and they’re nearly impossible to find at that time of year so it’s good to have some in the freezer. Same with ham at Easter, I’ve been watching the prices at Costco and right now they’re still at $3.39 lb for the spiral cut ones. I go there every week, so I’m watching with Easter coming in a few weeks. When they drop down to $1.99 lb or so, we get the limit we can get which is usually about five, make one for Easter and freeze the rest. Sometimes after the holiday if there are a lot left over they get even cheaper so we pick up a few more.
And as mentioned previously, if pork loin or shoulder or something is on sale $X.XX off per pack at Costco, we get a couple of the smallest size packages because that yields the lowest price per pound that way.

I just look for sales on meat at the Italian market we go to, otherwise I will stock up at Costco. I get geound beef at the grocery store, but since it is almost $10/pound for 96/4, I will probably start getting that at Costco or the market as well- I just wont be able to get my preferred level of leanness.

This makes me feel a bit better, the 85% lean is between $6-$7 here, just regular ground beef. We usually get 93 or 96 (except for burgers but that’s often bison) and those are closer to $7.00, but nothing near $10

We buy a 1/2 cow from a local rancher and the rest of our meat comes from Costco and/or Sam's Club.

I just did a quick look and beans are the same price they haven’t really gone up here for name brand at Sam’s. They are about $1. I am sure I could find generic cheaper. Organic Ground beef has been the same price for 6+ years at Sam’s/Costco. Eggs vary but are in the lower side right now around $2 for cage free eggs. Milk is up a bit over $3 a gallon.
I would love to see a good sale on seafood like sea bass or scallops I was tempted to splurge at Costco the other day but then decided against it.
Chicken has gone up a bit but occasionally there will be a good sale snd I stock up. I always have bought on sale and never pay full price except at Sam’s/Costco/Aldi since they are cheaper anyways.
Beef I think is the one that has increased the most. I don’t even look at steak prices and occasionally look at pot roasts I will grab a few when they go on sale. Organic ground beef has been a constant.
I don’t remember how much ground turkey is but think it’s higher at about $3 a pound.
Things that have increased are the extras chips, snacks, soda, ice cream but those hit in the first years of TFG before the pandemic and just keep getting worse.

We haven’t used Costco in at least 16 years, but the prices y’all are listing could be worth the aggravation of dealing with San Antonio traffic. We have one grocery store here. No Target. No warehouse clubs.

Sales at other stores are sometimes lower than the club stores you just need to watch the ads. I don’t always watch as close since we have the club stores. I was shopping in Aldi yesterday and an older couple were shopping and the man kept commenting on how much more everything was as the regular grocery store. That’s over $8 at Albertsons and under $4 here. It was entertaining and also shocking since I rarely shop at a regular grocery store. I check the ads and will take advantage of deals but I don’t do the majority of our shopping there, never have. Your time is worth something too. If you have to spend an extra hour to get to a store the savings might not be worth it.

The meat part of the weekly ad from our local HEB. Seems like a good time to buy chicken! And that’s a good price for prime sirloin IMO.

Merge Isn’t it great? We spent a lot of money on proteins last week and will again this week. It’s nice to see our freezer’s inventory creeping back up and costing a bit less. Lean is $6 or $7 a pound here. Cage free eggs over $3. I never thought I really lived in an area where groceries were all that expensive. But I’m in a small town outside the city with HEB’s headquarters so not so much here. If you’ve got to be “stuck” with only 1 grocery store, that’s the way to go though. I agree about time completely. If we had to plan a trip from home I doubt I’d be considering it. But DH does some contract work in SA most weeks, he’d only have to make a couple minute detour on the way home to pick up an order. But he hates traffic and it’s a heavily congested area. We’ll keep an eye on the prices for a little bit to see how much we could potentially save.

People who can might want to stock up on beef now, if they eat it. I imagine those prices will go up massively with this Texas Panhandle fire. I don't think that will have an impact on beef prices. Also - there are large quantities of hay being shipped to the panhandle now. Plus it is still early in the grass season. Most beef isn't raised on grass though - it is finished in feed yards (and they have BIG ones there). Cow/calf pairs do rely on the grass pastures more. But the calf is sold off the grass and finished in feedyard. The beef price is more set by supply/demand, corn price and whatever the packers can swindle out of producers, and screw the consumer. We are actively shopping for calves to finish now and the calf price is SHOCKINGLY high. Some went for a very high price last week in Pierre and they were program calves. The buyer bought them and took them out of the program, which was a shocker. To pay the premium for NHTC calves, then take them out and feed them as straight commerical and not get the premium NHTC bump at harvest. We can't figure out how that will make ANY profit. It's perplexing to say the least.

We don’t drink soda - some seltzer but I drink mostly water and the same with our son. Chips are usually for special occasions but I have bought more lately our son loves Doritos and I have bought a few bags lately. It’s also been candy season. I’m glad that after Easter there really isn’t a reason to buy candy until Halloween. It’s hard sometimes to not buy any junk. We didn’t in the past but I have a bit more recently and need to stop both my husband and I need to loose weight and are creating bad habits for our son. Moderation is key and not saying that no one should ever have treats.

I just got a big pork shoulder for .88/lb at Tom Thumb (Safeway) yesterday. My family really likes pulled pork so I try to grab one every time they are on sale. I get their lean ground beef when it is on sale for 3.99/lb, which is slightly cheaper than Sam's Club.
We eat a lot of chicken in various forms, as I can easily find it on sale. Whole chickens/thighs/drumsticks I try to get when they are around .99/lb. Boneless breasts and thighs will go under $2/lb.
I always check for the reduced for quick sale items. My best find recently was a ton of lean ground turkey marked down to $3/lb - I got 10 pounds.
I have noticed that canned beans are a lot higher. I've been cooking dry beans in the IP most of the time. Eggs are also a little higher again.

I do most of the grocery shopping myself, but occasionally if DH is home I’ll ask if he wants to go with me to Costco even though I *KNOW* we will end up spending more with him along. Part of my reasoning is if he comes with me, I get less blowback RE: what I spend there because he can see for himself what stuff actually costs.
