Link to Last Year's Thread--Thank you to those who responded last year. (I am noting all of that again. We dropped the trip right after that, but I thought I would crowdsource again.) So, last year I asked about Asheville/Gatlinburg/PF. We ended up canceling that trip for a few reasons, but it was mainly because my mom was having some medical issues and we were not sure she would be able to fly (she would have by that time but we did not know). Now we are going this summer (VRBO and flights purchased). I would love additional feedback now that we are locked in for this summer (end of June-beginning of July) Rundown:- 8 people (three teens, four 50ish yr olds, one 77 year old limited mobility)
- We have two rental SUVs for 8 people, so we can do different things. We plan on having a scooter for my mom.
- We are staying at a VRBO near Sylva, NC
- Plan on a day in Asheville area (min)
- Plan a day in Gatlinburg/PF area (min)
- 8 day trip (six full days in NC/TN)
- There over the 4th of July
Things I would like to know or we are considering:
--Should we all go to the Biltmore? I do think some of us will go for sure and my teens actually like touring homes, but it is self-directed with audio and still $100 a person. Is it REALLY worth it? My mom may just do the gardens since she has been there before.
--If we aren't into amusement parks, is Dollywood still worth it? What about just going to the waterpark if we feel we need a break (we like waterparks better for some reason).
--Things we have enjoyed before: ATVing/side by sides, horseback riding, whitewater rafting. Any recommendations for those in the general area? Any other activities we should do that are more unique to the area?
--Other than the NASCAR stuff, is it worth driving to Charolette? I think it looks like a great city, but it would be a drive and I don't think we would have the time, but FOMO.
--Favorite places to eat in those major areas or the smaller towns around Sylva that we should really consider? (One very picky eater, but she will find something or eat her own food). Prefer meals under $30 range but we are ok with one or two splurges.
--Where would you pick up food to take to VRBO? Best/interesting groceries in Asheville/Sylva area.
--Which state parks would you recommend the most? Easy to moderate hikes in parks/SMNP or other?
--Any hidden gems in the area/along the Blue Ridge parkway/other?
--Where would you go for the 4th of July? We don't need a big fireworks celebration. We are OK with or without them. Would like to something fun that day though.
--Other input? I just like to hear what people recommend.

We have vacationed in this area 3 out of the last 4 years. Here are some of our favorite things to do:
* Rent Slingshots and drive around the mountains. We have rented three Slingshots (and one Vanderhall), and it is by far my favorite experience from these trips. My husband plans our trips, and we have a blast driving through the mountain roads. * Eating at Old Red in Gatlinburg and Over Yander outside of Grandfather Mountain * Boots Steakhouse in Dillsboro, NC is delicious, great service, and the steak is so good * If you have any interest in foraging for mushrooms or other wild edibles, the No Taste Like Home Wild Food Tours is great! We learned a lot and the tour guide cooked the mushrooms we found on site. * The Tail of the Dragon is awesome to drive! I believe it is 318 turns in 11 miles. * Grandfather Winery and Banner Elk Winery are our favorite wineries in North Carolina. They are about 2 hours from Sylva, but amazingly beautiful and the wine is wonderful. * There are a few trout fishing places with stocked ponds that are fun to visit. We caught several fish and made a surf & turf dinner at our VRBO the last time we were there. * Sweetwater Valley Farm, in Tennessee, is a fun stop to make if you like cheese! They have fantastic ice cream, cheese, and a great tour of their cow barns.

Banner Elk is a cute small town. July 6th and 7th they have Art on the Greene www.bannerelk.com/members/art-on-the-greene/. If you make it to BE, you might enjoy a visit to Grandfather, but I'd prebook tickets: grandfather.com/Lots of small towns have 4th of July parades and all kinds of fireworks. Pick up a local paper and pick out fireworks (they're often spread over several days). This is something I want to do one year: skisugar.com/event/fireworks-top-sugar-mountain-2/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg will be a zoo. If you like Chihuly, I'd buy tickets for this exhibit at Biltmore: www.biltmore.com/things-to-do/events/chihuly-at-biltmoreI love Biltmore, but I'm not sure it's worth $100 to go tour the house during the summer. If you go to Asheville, there are some great chocolate shops in town. Since you mentioned you like whitewater rafting, this might be fun if you go to Charlotte: U.S. National Whitewater Center g.co/kgs/g44Lk7n

I just looked up tickets for Biltmore. We always have had season passes so I didn't know the going rate. Looking at what's available now, I would highly recommend the house/exhibit/2-day grounds. Looks like it's $115. If you have never seen the Chihuly exhibit, it is AMAZING! Also, the grounds are massive and stunning. So much to do. I would recommend a house tour time of 4 p.m. or so. Everyone wants to get there first thing in the morning but the late afternoon has always been a winner for us. Summer is definitely more difficult as far as crowds are concerned but so much to see/do. There is even horseback riding, and the trail goes behind the house. It is awesome.
Finding parking in downtown Asheville in the summer will be hard. There are some parking garages and lots of parallel parking. I always hate going downtown with the summer crowds. I am NOT a crowd person LOL!
We personally have never been back to Gatlinburg. We went once, and it was not our thing. It will be a zoo in the summer too and especially 4th of July. I think that will be the same everywhere.
Boone and Blowing Rock are nice but again--will be a zoo.
Hope you enjoy, and have a safe trip!

Personally I would skip PF/Gburg during 4th of July. Even on non-holiday dates, it is a nightmare to try to get anywhere, by car or by foot. I am not exagerating when I say it could take hours to get from the end of Gatlinburg near the Sugarlands Visitor Center (National Park end of town) through town and into Pigeon Forge. The sidewalks are absolutely swamped as well so unless it's just an must-do on your list, I'd skip it. Near Sylva there is great tubing and trout fishing in Bryson City over at the Deep Creek area of the National Park. You can rent tubes right at the entrance and spend the day tubing and the hiking is not too extreme. There are a couple of waterfalls in that area of the park. Tubing InfoAlso near Sylva is Waynesville and Maggie Valley. Waynesville has some good spots to eat - Bogarts (burgers are amazing and the Prolific Sweet Potato is my absolute favorite - sweet potato topped with pulled pork bbq, cheese, bbq sauce. It sounds gross but it is so delish!) There is a Bogarts in Sylva too, but they are not a chain and I ate at this one a few years back and was not impressed. Stick to the one in Waynesville!! Another good bbq joint is Haywood Smokehouse. They have a couple of locations but I've only eaten at the one in Waynesville. Haywood SmokehousePancea Coffee in Waynesville has a nice atmosphere and overlooks a creek. Pancea CoffeeThere are some good breweries both in Waynesville and Maggie Valley. Boojum Brewing and Bear Waters are my favorite. There are a couple of good homestyle breakfast places in Maggie Valley that we always enjoy - Joey's Pancake House and Country Vittles, whose website seems to be down currently. The latter is served family style with big bowls of food brought to the table and they'll replenish as requested. The drive is not for the faint of heart on the unimproved roads, but I love going into the Cataloochee Valley to view the elk and the old homesites. It's not the only place you might see the elk, but it is nice and quiet, usually, and just really a peaceful area to spend a few hours even if the elk aren't out. Cataloochee ElkPersonally, I would not waste time driving from Sylva to Charlotte. It is so so congested and the drive on any of the interstates around Asheville, Hickory and Charlotte will most likely be bumper to bumper (source: lived in Asheville AND upstate SC and traveled I-40 and I-85 to CLT regularly) Instead, if you're wanting more mountain activities, you could go towards Brevard, NC and into the Pisgah National Forest. Excellent swimming spots, fishing spots, waterfalls, windy mountain roads. Sycamore Flats Recreation Area has a lot of great spots to swim, picnic, bbq grills, etc. There's also flat, easy hiking here, too. For food to take to the VRBO, I would probably stop at Ingles or Publix in Waynesville. There's also a Super Walmart heading out of town on 74 like you would go to Sylva. The nearest Target is in Asheville. We always stop at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee before going over the mountain into Gatlinburg. You can sometimes see elk in the fields there too, but more often during rut season (autumn) but it's another nice area for a stroll, fishing, playing in the river, etc. Sorry this is so disjointed. I kept thinking of other things I wanted to add. I lived in Asheville and Maggie Valley and still visit the areas as often as I can. I hope you guys have a great time on your vacation!!

We've been to Ashville once. I will only comment on Biltmore house. It's gorgeous and absolutely worth it if one enjoys such things. Same with the gardens. However we went about ten years ago and were there a day or two before the 4th of July. It was packed and because the house is old and doesn't have central air, it was stifling. DD doesn't do well with crowds, especially indoors and between that and the heat, she and dh had to make a hasty exit as she was turning green. I did finish the tour, but rushed through it as I was worried about her and hot myself. We did enjoy the gardens much more after that. Dh and I want to go back but not at the height of the summer!

I know you said you'd have a scooter for mom but be aware Biltmore has tons of stairs, I'm not sure if they've altered the mansion to add in elevators.. but I know you said she may just enjoy the gardens if you go.
I live an hour south of Knoxville and it would take a huge amount of cash(and someone else driving) to convince me to go to PF/G in summer ESPECIALLY July 4th... just way too many people and too much traffic sitting for me, just be prepared and patient for that. I know they do have a firework show in PF though..
I think Dollywood is great and worth it. There area lots of shows and great shops for those not into doing rides. And other things such as blacksmith worke/ blown glass etc that can be watched. I personally love the 50s area there's usually great people that sing and such.. but it too is crowded and lines are lines, hilly terrain being East TN and it's tiring. But loved by us here and I think worthy of going if you've not gone. You used to get free cups of water at the food spots, it'll be hot after all, but I'm not 100%sure they still do that..
Knoxville has a great zoo, also hilly terrain but seriously a nice zoo.. If you venture to Sweetwater like someone else mentioned the Sweetwater Valley farm cheese is fantastic. I recommend the buttermilk cheese, it's so lovely. Being that I live on farm that was a dairy I support local farms as I can.. BUT if you're gonna venture that far out I have to suggest The Lost Sea I Sweetwater it's a cavern with a underground lake and you get to go on a boat, it's always cool in there so it's nice on a hot day. It's great and often overlooked, doing that then grabbing food in Sweetwater at the Lazy Beagle(it is like a pub though but has food-they have a Facebook) then followed by ice cream at Sweetwater Valley farm as you go back would be a pretty fun packed day.. Sweetwater btw has a nice July 4th parade, good small town kind with vendors set up and flags and genuinely nice people.. I think it's usually around noon or 1pm or so, you'd want to find out if you plan to do this.
You might could catch a baseball game at Smokies stadium if that's your thing. It's a minor league team. I think it's fun but not b everyone cares for baseball but haven't been able to go in years..
Cades Cove is nice to by the Gatlinburg area. Very old area with old cabins you can look in and a waterfall you can walk to..lots of deer and often bears to see too. Lots of great photo ops and gorgeous scenery.. highly recommend driving the loop takes an hour or so depending on if you stop and explore..
There's supposed to be new adventure park opening in Seviervill or Sevier County I think called Wildside? I'm not sure I'm sure you can Google for it.. 4x4 rentals and such, not my think but thought I'd mention it.

It's great and often overlooked There is an elevator at Biltmore - it takes you from the first floor to the second floor. After you get done with seeing Mrs. Vanderbilt's bedroom on the 2nd floor, instead of going upstairs to the guest rooms and the big living room, you go back to the area with the large portrait of Olmsted and there is a small room off to the side with chairs and a looped video showing different rooms in the house. After your group gets done with the third floor, and goes back down the main staircase, you can meet up with the person to take the elevator back to the first floor. The person won't be able to take the elevator down to the basement to see the Halloween room, bowling alley, dressing rooms, gym, pool, kitchen, or servant's quarters. I don't know how they rejoin the group to see the gentlemen's rooms at the end of the tour on the first floor. It's definitely a workout - if my mom goes on the house tour (we have annual passes), we pretty much don't do anything else at Biltmore except drive around and look at the flowers inside the Conservatory. If you take your mom, park in the handicapped lot (you don't have to have a handicapped parking pass to park there), and take the shuttle to the house - it will drop you off near the front of the house. I'd drive to the conservatory, and if you go to Antler Hill Village/the Winery, drop her off and then find a place to park - even the handicapped parking there is far away. I was going to mention the Lost Sea! It's a couple hours west, but I always enjoyed it!

Wow! I love all the specific recommendations. Very helpful! I can look up stuff for hours and hours...and do, but sometimes just talking to people who have been there/know the area, helps so much more. I have always received great info from the Peas!
Thank you and hopefully others have even more to share.
I think we just plan on G/PF area for a day to say we have been there. We will try to keep it as far from the 4th as possible. I really think we will likely spend most of our time in the mountain towns and/or doing activities like rafting/hiking/ATC-slingshot. but I want to keep my eyes open to everything. We love the mountains...my kids love them. WE have not been to the Smokies/Blue Ridge (other than my mom), so this will be new for us. Very excited!

We were just in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area last week for spring break. The Great Smoky Mountains and Dollywood were bucket list destinations for me and I LOVED both! Dollywood was such a treat and we would definitely return if given the opportunity. The whole park is very well themed, clean and friendly. We spent the whole day there.
The main road through Pigeon Forge itself is totally skippable though. Think of the most tacky family activities, multiply by 100 and you get Pigeon Forge.
Gatlinburg was not much better. Streets were so congested with cars and pedestrians and the town is just a bunch of crazy family activities, t-shirt shops and themed restaurants.
However, the GSMNP was spectacular and not to be missed. We did a couple of very easy hikes and drove to Cades Cove. So beautiful!!

Then we headed back to Sylva and had drinks and appetizers at Lulu's on Main and watched the fireworks from the grassy area next to City Hall.

Ohhh, Asheville is one of my favorite places to visit. I like the fun stores downtown, so much for everyone. I always stop at Malaprop's Bookstore and Mast General store.
The adventurous can try Sliding Rock. I chickened out but it looks like fun. Sliding (Rock is a waterfall in Western North Carolina, located near Brevard, so named because visitors can slide all the way down the waterfall into the plunge pool below. The plunge pool is around 8 feet deep in the middle, with a strong churning river current, so users must be able to swim or wear a life vest)

We moved to Knoxville a year ago so we spend most of our weekends exploring the areas you are going to be visiting. Should we all go to the Biltmore? I do think some of us will go for sure and my teens actually like touring homes, but it is self-directed with audio and still $100 a person. Is it REALLY worth it? My mom may just do the gardens since she has been there before. We enjoyed Biltmore but not with kids. My kids would have hated it. If I were to go again I would only do the gardens. The house was a one and done for us. I do want to go see the Chuley Exhibit! --If we aren't into amusement parks, is Dollywood still worth it? What about just going to the waterpark if we feel we need a break (we like waterparks better for some reason). We have season passes to Dollywood. They have great roller coasters, the food is great and it's so clean. My MIL loves going and just watching people. She is a scooter person like your mom. --Things we have enjoyed before: ATVing/side by sides, horseback riding, whitewater rafting. Any recommendations for those in the general area? Any other activities we should do that are more unique to the area? I loathe Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge in General. We do to Dollywood and that's it. It's so crowded and commercialized. We like the the other side of the mountain - Townsend and Cades Cove. Cades Cove does get crowded but if you go first thing in the morning it's really enjoyable. There are some hikes you can do in Cades Cove as well. Bring your lunch as there is no food services. We like going to the Foxfire Mountain Adventure Park. Its located 12 miles outside the city limits of Gatlinburg , Sevierville or Pigeon Forge. They claim to have the longest swinging bridge and a really neat covered bridge that is covered in wishes (on paper). --Where would you pick up food to take to VRBO? Best/interesting groceries in Asheville/Sylva area. We normally cook when we stay in VBRO - my husband loves cooking on vacation. He is weird. We also do a lot of grocery store premade food. Ingels has a decent selection of premade food so we shop there. Ashville has a Trader Joes and Whole Foods as well --Which state parks would you recommend the most? Easy to moderate hikes in parks/SMNP or other? Super easy hike is to the Fairy House hikinginthesmokymountains.com/blog/hiking-house-fairies-great-smoky-mountains/ --Any hidden gems in the area/along the Blue Ridge parkway/other? We stayed in Bryson NC last summer and really enjoyed exploring around there. I actually love Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area. But I hit the things that I like and for most of it we drive on the back roads to avoid most of the traffic. Teaster road is a great road to use in PF. On July 3rd right at midnight Gatlinburg does the biggest 4th oh July parade and it is wonderful. We park up traffic light 3 and sit on the wall going down into town avoiding the huge crowd. Well worth it. My favorite restaurant in Gatlinburg is Howard's. It's at the very end of the town. Again we drive back roads to avoid the traffic. In PF we love Carrinos Italian restaurant and Applebarn restaurant but we go there at 4pm to avoid the huge dinner rush. There apple fritters and apple butter are worth it. Love the apple spice cake with sauce for dessert. Cades Cove is absolutely gorgeous but make sure you have drinks with you and use the bathroom before you go if you do the long loop.

I would definitely do Biltmore for a day. It's the main attraction in that part of NC.
I can't imagine why you would go to Charlotte. You are going to be doing enough driving covering this much territory and there's really nothing in Charlotte unless you are attending a performance of some kind.
Research Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge to see specifically what you want to do there. Traffic 4th of July week is very heavy, there are so many attractions. Some will appeal to you and some won't but you don't want to waste time trying decide what to see once you are there. You can walk around Gatlinburg but you have to drive to what you want to see in Pigeon Forge. I do recommend Parrott Mountain in Pigeon Forge. It's out of town a bit and you will need to inquire about limited mobility (they had golf carts they drove some guests around in) but we really enjoyed the birds last year. It's local and different. It's just something very different for what is such a touristy, often chain themed activities/restaurants town.
I have stopped going to Gatlinburg after going almost every year of my life through my 40's. When they tore down the Arrowcraft shop for a parking lot, they lost me. What charm the town had is gone. However, they do have a 4th of July parade that begins at 12:01 am on the 4th. And the one argument for going there is access to Great Smoky Mtns nation park. The drive through the park to get to Gatlinburg from Cherokee is beautiful. There are plenty of hikes and the drive through Cades Cove is popular. However, I will caution you that you are going at one of the highest traffic times for this area. You may want to research some of the less used trails.

Thought of a couple more things to add. One of the closest attractions to you (about an hour to start) will be the various waterfalls which the area is famous for particularly in the Highlands/Cashiers area. Some are right by the road, others require a hike. ncwaterfalls.com is a place to start. The town of Highlands is nice.
One thing I do NOT recommend is the Smoky Mountain Railway or whatever it is called. Basically the train trip. That's the most boring thing ever and the scenery isn't that great. It is supposed to be better in the fall but we went in summer and it was a waste of time and money.
Tubing is always available in the area. We were staying in Cherokee one time and there were places that rented tubes and creeks you could go on. DH's grandchildren loved it.

We live in Knoxville, and really love driving and hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a National .treasure. The drive from Ashville to Blowing .rock is spectacular, and there are several trails to hike. If you’ve never been on the Parkway, I highly recommend it. We usually stay at Chetola Resort when in Blowing Rock. It is lovely.

Thanks so much for all your responses to my questions. I do think my kids want to go. I am not going to force anyone to go though. I am pretty sure my SIL, my mom (at least grounds),and myself are going for sure. My brother, his teen daughter? Not sure. My teen boys? One of them is 100% and the other probably 85% sure (DH the same). They like history and have been on a couple of house tours and enjoyed them.
