My father-in-law, the loveliest man on the planet, was named Domenico (but went by Domenic). My husband's brother had the first son and nicknamed him Nick so we would've been stuck with Dom or Nicky or some such other nickname (I was willing to go with Nico.) My second son is Dominic and I decided when he was born he would be Nic or Nico. Guess how that went? As soon as he could talk, it was always Dom - he's now 35 and uncle to 2 sweet little girls. Miss 5 calls him Uncle Don and Miss almost 2 can just manage Dom so far - he is the only person apart from Mummy and Daddy whose name she uses consistently.

Grandfather, father and brother all had the middle name Leonard. Sister-in-law insisted that the name end and my nephew Joshua thanks her! Leonard/Len are both really common names for boys in Germany right now. I know at least 3 people, including our upstairs neighbors, who have boys with this name under age 5.

My ex-husband is III of his namesake. He did not want our son to have his name and become IV because he never liked it and said it was so confusing when he lived at home with his Dad. DS has it as a middle name though.

There was a story several generations ago in my family about a mother wanting her daughter to name not just one, but two of the grandchildren after her, LOL! But other than that, no, I'm not aware of anyone putting pressure on anyone else to use certain names. So basically, Susan's mom was Elizabeth. Susan named her first daughter "Beth" in honor of Elizabeth. But then when Susan had daughter number three, Elizabeth was insisting Susan name that child "Libby", also after herself. Nervy, eh? Now there have been a lot of people named after others in my family, simply because that was tradition at the time. But "Elizabeth" was the only story I know of where the naming parents really didn't want any part of going with the name tradition or another relative was suggesting. I’m always surprised when people demand kids be named for them. My mil tried it with dh because his brother used it as his DD’s middle name. He insisted our kids not be named after anyone.
