Does your front door (the main door, not a storm door or screen door) open inward or outward?
I always assumed front doors in the US opened inward. And then I was reading something that said in some parts of the US, the front door opens outward. I did not know that. I know in some countries, like Japan, the front door opens outward. So, is your front door an innie or an outie?

The storm door opens outward, but the main front door itself opens inward.

I wonder what the hinges are like that the door opening outward is safe, I would have assumed they all opened in as well.

The storm door opens outward, but the main front door itself opens inward. This is our situation also.

I have a place in Florida, and we investigated putting in hurricane rated doors. To do that, the door has to open outward, so it can’t be shoved in by the wind. So something like that might be a reason for some of them to open outward.

Mine opens inward. I'm on the Canadian prairies, and there are times during the winter when there's been a big storm with lots of blowing snow that if the door didn't open in, I wouldn't be able to open it because of a snowbank across it! We've literally had to shovel our way out on occasion

Germany here. Both the main door into our building and the door to our individual apartment open inwards.

Florida doors open outwards. It took me about a month to get used to it.

We’ve lived in 18 houses in 11 states and 2 foreign countries over the past 34 years. Every one of them have opened inward. We’ve never lived in Florida, but have lived in Alabama.

After thinking about it I assumed it was because of the hurricanes.

Public doors (commercial buildings) open outward, private doors open inward. I learned this when we built our home and requested that the French doors open outward. They put them in that way but I came to regret it as they leaked and eventually I had them replaced with ones that open in.

Inward. The only front door I remember that opened out was on a manufactured home. I thought it was because the location of the hinges/so you can't be barricaded inside your own house...

I don't recall ever coming across a private home in which a main exterior doors (not screen or storm) opened outward. In fact, it's unusual enough to be immediately noticeable to me if even an interior door opens towards you rather than into the room that you are about to enter.

North Central Florida - both exterior doors open inward. Our previous house the front opened in and the back opened out...I suspect because there wasn't room to open in.

Basement doors open outward (that is, into the main level room, not into the basement stairwell), I assume so that you don't have to lean over the stairs/stairwell to try and grab the door to close it? None of the other doors inside seem to open outward. I should add that screen doors open outward because I'm not sure how you could ever make it work to have them open the same direction as the regular door, unless there were a small airlock/entry way between.

Inwards here. I don't think I've been to a house that has doors that open outwards.

South Florida, Palm Beach Gardens, newer hurricane doors open outward. Have lived in Florida pretty much my entire life and do not think I ever lived in a house where the door opened inward.

My exterior door opens inward. My family in the Tampa, FL area, their door also opens inward.
I always thought commercial doors opened outward for safety in emergencies or outer such to allow masses to exit quickly.

For those who have doors that open outwards are the hinges hidden? As someone else commented I wonder about the safety of that.

Pretty well every house here has doors that open inwards, but for some reason back door opens outwards. It is usually no problem at all, except when the guy delivering the groceries piled them up against the door - I can’t open the door to get the groceries because the groceries were in the way! Now I keep a watch for him so I can open the door while he brings the bags up from his truck.

I believe that in order to pass an inspection, the door has to open to the inside. This way a person can always get out of their house if there is a fire. If the door opens outwards and a person has blocked the door with a box or something, then the person inside may not be able to get out. It's a fire hazard.

If the door opens outwards and a person has blocked the door with a box or something, then the person inside may not be able to get out. It's a fire hazard. I had to look it up and could not find any regulations (at least in California) that said a door has to open inward. This is from a local door company in San Diego: While there are areas of the country that may vary, there is no universal building code that forbids the use of residential exterior doors that open outward. Because of hurricane-force winds, Florida communities are now seeing the concept of outward opening doors as an advantage. While it won’t hurt to check with your local building authorities, it’s likely outward-opening doors are allowed.www.uswindow-door.com/faq/can-front-doors-open-outwards

Our previous house the front opened in and the back opened out Now that I think about it, one uncle had a house where the back door opened outwards too. I guess I was so used to it, I never really paid attention.

We have two entry doors on our front porch: one opens inward to our living room, but the one we use primarily, which goes into the mudroom, opens outward.
The exterior door that goes onto our upper deck also opens outward.

So something like that might be a reason for some of them to open outward. Us too. We just ordered some new doors and it’s going to be like a fortress.
