Do you get motion sickness? Have you always had it? Did it change?
The mention of the road to Hana in the travel thread, made me think about this. When I was a kid, I read all the time in the car and never felt sick. Went on all the scary roller coasters with no problems. Never felt car sick. Now, I can't even read on my phone in a moving car without feeling sick. I can quickly look up an address or look at the map, but I can't do more than that. Can't read a physical book in a moving car either. If we are traveling on a curvy road, I need to sit up front (preferably with the window open) or do the driving. I dread if we take a trip and we need to get on a tour bus for a length of time. And I won't go on those simulator rides at the amusement parks. Plane rides generally aren't too bad, except I always get a little queasy when we make the final descent into Las Vegas. Maybe because it is a smaller plane. Also had no problems reading on the commuter train.

Never experienced car/motion sickness until I was about 27 and was in the rolling hills of Missouri.
I now wear the motion sickness pressure bands when I anticipate trouble. They work very well for me.
I get sick in airplanes or cars. Riding in the front seat helps as well as being the driver.

Only when playing VR driving games. Not in real life.

Yes, I've always had problems with motion sickness. In a car, I'm okay in the front and sometimes in the back depending on the driver. I always get sick on a boat. From a ferry to a cruise ship, it makes no difference. I don't cruise but I still take ferries if I have to. When I do, I have to stand on deck with the wind blowing on me to not get sick.

I’ve always had terrible motion sickness from cars, but only riding in the back. I also get really motion sick on boats. I just don’t ride distances in the backseat of a car, and I take dramamine if I am getting on a boat. Carnival rides kill me too. Things like roller coasters and planes are fine.

The only time I ever felt anything that I think was considered motion sickness is when I was about 7 months pregnant. We were fishing on my parent’s boat. I went down into the cabin area for the first time on that trip and barely made it back up the stairs to throw up over the edge of the boat. Of course those on the boat got a good laugh out of it. I was well past the stage of morning sickness, so I really don’t think it was that. The pregnancy probably did have something to do with it though because it had never happened before and didn’t happen again after my son was born.

I'm not able to read in a moving vehicle without getting motion sickness. I've been like that since I was a kid. I tried doing it a couple years ago and still have issues.
I general I don't have issues with boats, moving vehicles or rollercoasters. I don't ride carnival rides as an adult, but didn't have issues with them as a kid.

I've only experienced it once - when we were on a whale watching trip and the weather turned and it got REALLY rough before we could make it back to the marine.
I grew up sailing on the Columbia, including sleeping on our boat a lot, and I have long wondered if my early and consistent exposure to that helped me avoid motion sickness.

I’ve only had it once…sailing out on the open ocean on a sailboat. Cars, rides, other types of sailing are fine.

Mine is very similar to yours - no problem as a kid, but now I have to ride in the front and cannot check my phone whilst in motion.

Honestly, no.
Been on some rough seas too. I make a point to be outside on a deck during it (fresh air really helps) and keep my eyes on the horizon.
Never been car or airplane sick either.

I get car sick if I am a passenger and the driver reverses for a little too long. My husband and I went on a road trip to Big Sur years ago and he asked me to check something on the map and I told him only if he wanted me to hurl in the car. When I was a kid and we’d stay at my aunt and uncles cabin in Big Bear my family always joked I had a spot during the drive down the mountain where I’d always puke.
I did a blind medical study on a boat for a motion sickness medication and it was horrendous. Worth the money I made but only because I must have gotten the drug, so I didn’t puke but I felt awful the entire time. They took us out to deep waters and just let us float and the bobbing up and down nearly took me out.

I never did as a kid, and I also read for hours on planes, trains, and (mostly) automobiles. Now I do occasionally on planes, but I notice it's mostly in turbulent weather (not a surprise) or when there's not much air circulation.
DD used to get motion sick in the car all the time on anything longer than a trip within the city. Fresh air or at least moving air would also help her some. Now she usually doesn't (she's 18) but still has an occasional problem that still seems tied to air circulation. She sometimes has a problem in the back seat on car trips and she has a hard time if she's working on a hot, rough riding ambulance, especially if she has to ride backwards.
But air temperature and circulation seem to be problems for both of us, and we aren't even biologically related so I think there's something to that!

yes, unfortunately... cars, boats, busses, trains, and planes. Ever since I was a kid. We went on our first cruise in 2017 and I was scared that I was going to spend the whole time feeling yucky! A nurse friend suggested meclizine (generic from WalMart). I took it in the evening at dinner every night. By the time the sleepy effects were taking hold, I was going to bed anyhow. It was a wonder drug! Lasts 24 hours. I don't take it when we go on car rides though, because I don't want to be sleepy if I have to drive.

Ugh I feel sorry for those of you who suffer motion sickness. I've never really had it and I'm thankful.
ExH and I took the Victoria Clipper from Seattle to Victoria BC once and it was super choppy. People were throwing up everywhere and ExH just had to stay still and not move because he was so sick. I tried to encourage him to go out to the back deck and get some air but after i went out there and saw all of the vomit, I told him just to stay put.

I learned that boats will make me sick. We took a deep sea fishing day trip. Boat leaves Galveston, goes out for 4 hours, stops for fishing for 4 hours and then 4 hours back to shore. I had never had motion sickness at that time, so it never entered my mind. While we were waiting to board the ship/boat 2 girls were taking pills and I wondered, "Will I get sick?" Sure enough, I was hanging on the rail and throwing up like crazy. I was so sick another man, also sick, gave me some pills. I had to go lie on beds they had for the people who were sick. When the boat stopped for the fishing, I was just fine. (caught some red snappers). When boat began to return to shore, I was sick again.
Wrist bands: Don't leave home without them!!

Yes, I have it everywhere that moves, plus any sort of virtual reality ride or movie.
I was able to take 2 cruises by taking 24 hour Dramamine. I took one at breakfast, a second 12 hours later, to ensure a steady dose over the 24 hour period. I only had trouble in the theater in one ship, as it had a balcony I could see moving a little bit above me. I noped out of that quickly!

Fortunately I’ve rarely had issues with motion sickness. The one exception was two years ago when my sister and I took the Cat from Maine to Nova Scotia during rough seas. I was okay as long as I stayed still. Neither of us ate for about 24 hours afterwards.
My daughter has to drive or be in the front seat, can not read anything at all while riding in the car, and discovered last year, during flights to accompany her daughter to visits to her father in Florida, that she gets very sick on airplanes now. She didn’t several years ago. I can only imagine she’d be very sick on boats.

I used to love roller coasters when I was younger, but I got queasy the last time I rode them about 7 years ago and haven't ridden them since. I had that happen once in college, but figured it was something I ate.
I never could tolerate the Star Tours type rides at amusement parks (the ones where they have you stand on dots to line up to get on the rides), and when I was in undergrad, a new ride in the Ireland section opened up in Busch Gardens Williamsburg (I think it was Corkscrew Hill). My friends and I waited for ages to ride it, and since it was brand new, we had no idea what it was like. As soon as I saw the dots, I tried to leave, but my friends talked me into riding it anyways. They are lucky that I didn't barf!
I also couldn't stand the pendulum rides like the Battering Ram (https://buschgardens.com/williamsburg/rides/battering-ram/) even when I was a kid.
I didn't have any problems on my Rhine river cruise in 2022, but I generally haven't had problems on boats.
I sometimes get a little queasy on mountain roads here if some of my family members are driving, but they don't drive very often (thankfully!).
As I've gotten older, I've definitely become more like my mom when it comes to motion sickness than like my dad. I just hope I don't get sick at the sight of the dry cleaner racks moving, like my mom did once!

I had it badly my entire life…until I got cataract surgery and they put in new lenses in my eye. Voila! No more car sickness.
I chalk this up to not having astigmatisms anymore.

Really bad! I had it as a child and still do now. Where I grew up is at the base of the mountains, and on weekends my parents would drive there for walks/picnics etc, but it's a lot of twisty roads and I'd often be sitting on the floor in the back with a vomit bag...my parents used to think I was exaggerating, but 50+ years later I'm still the same. The only mode of transport I don't get sick on is a plane. Cars & buses are the worst, I can't look down at all, and it depends on the driver too - if they hit the brakes too hard...that's it for me. There's some people I'll never get in a car with again. If it's on a track (train or tram) I'm usually OK if I just look straight ahead, can't look down and sometimes can't even look out of the window.
I get it in the cinema as well unless I sit at the back and can see the edges of the screen. I got really motion sick watching Titanic and had to rush to the bathroom! And some movies where the camera work is jerky, or if it spins around, I'm out. Even on small screen like a TV or a computer, I can't watch or play video games where characters move around the screen, I can't watch videos of rollercoasters. I know better than to even try 'virtual reality' anything.
It's a nightmare, but nothing I can do about it, except to avoid doing the things that trigger it. It's not just the sick/vomity/burpy feeling while I'm in motion...it can last for a couple of hours afterwards too.,

I’ve only had problems with it twice. Normally I have no problem reading in the car, riding in the back seat, going on rides at amusement parks (high drops, spinning rides, going backwards, corkscrews, VR, no issues at all), and for the most part no issues with boats or planes. The two times I actually got sick was once on a deep sea fishing trip when it was very windy and the water was horribly choppy and another time on a cruise ship when it was very choppy water. Ever since that second time now I just plan to take 24 hour Dramamine every day of the cruise and haven’t had any more problems. I can say from experience though that if you have to barf up something, mint Oreos or Andes Thin Mints aren’t the worst choice.

pjayeHave you tried the wrist bands? They do work--at least they work for me. In US the cost about $15 at the drugstore store, so not a big investment to try them.
