Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know that I’m leaving on a trip tomorrow to Germany for 5 weeks, and will be limiting my social media during that time, so I probably won’t be posting while on my trip.
DH and I will be traveling through Bavaria (it’s his first trip to Germany and I can’t wait to introduce him to the country of my birth) and then he has to return home for work after 2 1/2 weeks. Then I’ll have the last 2 1/2 weeks for solo travel (I really love solo travel) and will spend 6 nights in Berchtesgaden, then travel north to the Rhine river area. We are using the train system for the entire journey switching cities every 2-3 days. I’m so excited and it still hasn’t hit me yet that I’m actually going.
Take care everyone and I’ll talk to you all when I return.

Safe travels. I hope our weather improves before you arrive - after a few lovely days, we are about to get hit with a massive thunderstorm in Munich.
You probably already know, but Thursday is a public holiday here, so nothing open. It shouldn’t affect your travel, except for having many travel companions on the trains, but will make shopping difficult.

Yes, I do know about the public holiday on Thursday, but just found out about it 2 weeks ago. I’ve been planning this trip for a year, and somehow checking holidays just slipped my mind. We are flying into Frankfurt and immediately taking the train to Mainz where we will be staying for the first 2 days. Both of us were very keen to see the Gutenberg museum, but almost certainly it will be closed on Thursday, our first full day in Germany and our last full day in Mainz. Thanks to the new airline trends of switching your plane tickets around even after you have booked them, instead of arriving in Germany in the morning it’ll be closer to 4 pm by the time we get to our hotel. Ah well, you’ve got to expect a few curve balls during travel and learn to pivot and adjust plans, right? Thanks for all the well wishes for this trip. I’m beyond excited to get back to Germany, eat the food I love and have my mother tongue come back to me a bit more each day so by the time I leave I can speak German again. Regarding the rain-I am all prepared with a rain jacket, gore-Tex pants and waterproof Dansko sneakers. As the Germans say there is no bad weather, just improper clothing .

By the way Sueg, I only have one day in Munich planned, but if you have the time would you like to possibly meet for coffee or a beer? I’ll be in Munich on May 30th. PM me and we can go from there.

Both of us were very keen to see the Gutenberg museum, but almost certainly it will be closed on Thursday, Yes, unfortunately, it's one of the museums that shuts on public holidays (not all do). There are further public holidays on Monday, May 20 (all Germany) and Thursday May 30 (Bayern, Baden-Wurttemberg, Hessen and the Rhinelands). All these holidays cause long weekends, which means traffic chaos. Hopefully, not too many of the things you want to see or do will be affected. Just saw your next post - I will be around on May 30, so message me if you have time to meet up. Biergarten would be lovely if the wether cooperates!

Yes, I have the next two holidays you mentioned written down in my traveling notes.
Regarding the Gutenberg museum: There is a chance we could see it on Friday morning (we are meant to leave that morning to journey by train to Rothenburg OdT), if we can get the hotel to hold our bags for a couple of hours, and then get on the train a couple of hours late. Will have to play all of this by ear.
DH and I both love books so seeing that museum was something we were both looking forward to. But it also means getting to Rothenburg later in the day and we only have 2 days there ( well, a day and a half) and it is such a special place. DH is also a photographer-he’s going to love it there. I know I did 7 years ago.

I was born in Germany but on a US Air Force base. We're doing a Rhine River cruise in late August/early September and I'm so excited to see the country where I was born!

I live in Germany, and in the area where OP is travelling. Yes, we have had threats made, but life is going on as usual here. I don’t feel in any danger in my everyday routine. Overall, Germany is a very safe country, probably much safer than the US.

What an incredible trip!! Have the BEST time!! I was born in Germany but on a US Air Force base. We're doing a Rhine River cruise in late August/early September and I'm so excited to see the country where I was born! How exciting! Will this be the first time you've been back? Where were you born? I was born in Wurzburg and my sister was born in Frankfurt. My Mom is German and my father is American, but was taught German by the Army Language Institute so we only spoke German at home until we moved to the USA when I was 6 years old. I've been back off and on to visit my Oma but she passed away 20 years ago. 7 years ago was the first time I went back strictly on a sightseeing tour (not to see relatives) and it was the best trip of my life-2 weeks solo journey around Bavaria. I'm not doing a traditional Rhine River cruise of several days this time, but I will be spending many days in that area hopping from town to town via the trains. I am taking a day cruise on the Rhine river.

Yes I heard about it but honesty I'm not too concerned. I consider our country (the USA) at least a level 2-3 threat itself. Germany is a very safe country. I do pay attention to all of the warnings about pickpockets, and don't take any chances. I'm very detail oriented which helps a lot-I'm not a scatter brained person who loses track of things. I carry a Travelon safety purse (to avoid pickpockets) and will be cautious.

I was born in Bremerhaven and we were also briefly at Ramstein although I'm not sure if that was before I was born or after. My parents were both American but my dad was stationed there in the early 60s. I hope you have a fabulous time!
