I didn't like it at first.
There was just so much red, which felt angry, bloody.
But looking at the details, the hands, the face, the butterfly..... It does give you something to think about. And it definitely is different.
I don't know if I love it, but I don't hate it anymore.

I love the likeness and creativity, but the red overshadows the subject. The background should not be the most significant part of a portrait. It also looks like Charles is burning in hell.

I wasn't sure at first. The red felt like an affront. But, the more I see it the more I like it.

I think his head needs to be less obvious, if that makes sense.. I feel like his head is popping out of the frame.. if it was more blended in, I would like it better.. I now can't get past the floating head.

I think all the red is awful. It gives the impression of being bloody- literally, not in the UK slang way Based on the face and hands, he is obviously a talented artist. I'll admit I don't have an artist's eye and I do prefer a more traditional look, but it does strike me as a lazy way to do a portrait.

I absolutely love it and think it's the coolest portrait ever.

The likeness is spot on, and I appreciate the talent required to create it, but the red hits me in the eyes and distracts from the subject. For me, it's the visual equivalent of Wagner played at top volume until the speakers distort. Overwhelming. Great metaphor! I sometimes look at art and compare it to music, too, by color or structure. I think it goes both ways - painters create work inspired by songs/genres (Whistler was inspired by Chopin's Nocturnes) and musicians have been inspired by visual art (Coldplay, Viva La Vida by Frida Kahlo). I'm warming up to the painting just based on some of the impressions here on this thread. The arts make us feel something, even if it's not what the artist intended.
