My wispy twigs of Chicago Hardy figs grew to massive bushes, so don't give up!
I have bugs galore attacking my garden so I've been mixing up insecticidal soap, shaking diatomaceous earth everywhere and squishing what I can stand to squish. Especially the spotted lantern fly nymphs that have descended upon us. DH had good intentions but bad execution by buying me 10 rose bushes for Mother's Day. This after years of him telling me we don't have room for more. And he chose the colors I never would've chosen, so now I have this odd collection I'm still trying to find spots for as well as buying one (maybe need another) expensive rose arch because he got 4 climbers and giant pots for a couple that can thrive in pots. Those massive pots are $$$. Plus in all our married years of me loving heirloom roses, when have I ever said I wanted a blue rose or one that's red & white striped?!? Oof. One thing that is going right is I did several mixed planters and baskets for our grandson's first birthday party which we hosted and the plants all grew into the planters beautifully and I love the layered, lush look they give the yard. Thank you for mentioning that! It does give me hope!

I’ve always sprinkled coffee grounds in my beds because my mom and grandfather did.
I’m trying crushed egg shells, beer traps and diatomaceous earth to deter the slugs. Unfortunately it just keeps raining which cancels 2 of those out.
My tomatoes are doing well.
Threw in some moonflower seeds hopefully those take. I love the idea of a night bloomer.
My erosion preventing plants are starting to fill in but it’s such a big area I have to add more. I lined the top with butterfly bushes. So far the deer have left them alone.

Everything is really small! I started some seeds indoors, but not many of them took, so I replanted outside. We are leaving town for a week very soon, so we'll see how they fare. For squirrel repellent, we use cayenne pepper. They dont really eat plants, but they dig in the planters. Cayenne works on them as well as bunnies who do eat plants! My annuals all seem to be on the small side too. Maybe I'm misremembering, but last year I thought they were bigger already.
I tried cayenne, and the squirrels laughed at me. LOL.
You have to reapply it frequently

We just planted this weekend. This is our foray into vegetable gardening. We bought a raised bed. In it we put cherry tomatoes, san marzano tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, zucchini. I did plant basil around the tomatoes too. And I put some lemongrass in the bed and some marigolds.
Then I did another raised bed of herbs. Oregano, cilantro, thyme, parsley, dill. I did a planter of rosemary.
And I still have two snap bean plants to plant and I insisted on a blueberry bush in Esther's memory as blueberries were her favorite muffin.
We shall see how it goes. I have two indoor plants that Jeremy is keeping alive that were gifts from her funeral. One hangs in her room too.

That's sweet about the blueberry (and indoor plants) for Esther's memory, jeremysgirl. Good luck with your garden! We just planted this weekend - Northern VA here, so we always wait until after May 15. Then it was either too rainy or just too dang hot when it wasn't raining. We got good conditions this weekend so we went for it. I only do container gardening and we did 2 large containers of perennials, 1 large container of mixed herbs (dill, basil, rosemary, cilantro, oregano) and 1 large container with 3 cherry tomato plants and 2 sweet red mini peppers. We also did 4 smaller pots of perennials on the front steps. At some point this summer we are having our driveway and walkways torn up and replaced, and some shrubbery taken out, so containers were the only way to preserve some sort of garden this year. The yard will be pretty torn up for a while once we start all those projects.
