Butter on the outside and a bit of grated Parmesan kind of pressed into it. I use different cheese inside based on what we have and how bad I want to be. I like deluxe American then add others like cheddar and Swiss but we don’t always have Swiss. I like the added crunch and taste of the Parmesan crust and think it’s the thing that makes it really good. I tried Mayo but wasn’t a fan.

I don't often make grilled cheese sandwiches but when I do the outside must be buttered and I like to use monterey jack cheese with a couple slices of ham. Yum!

I rarely have mayo in the fridge. I grew up in a Miracle Whip house and never acquired a taste for mayo. I have had mayo grilled cheese and didn’t particularly like it. If my butter is too hard. I melt it in the pan and do a quick dip on both sides to get it spread evenly then grill on low to get it good and melty. If I want to be really fancy, I sprinkle a little garlic salt on both sides for a nice pop of flavor. I don’t always have American cheese on hand, but if I do, that goes in the middle. If not, then I do sharp cheddar or a combo of cheddar and Swiss. I also found that spreading some peach preserves on the inside with the American or cheddar cheese results in a delightful sandwich (no garlic salt on this one, though!). LOL, that reminds me of a time decades ago when DH was making himself a PB&J sandwich right before we were due to head out the door for something so I asked if he would make me one too. I went about getting ready to leave while he makes the sandwich and he hands it to me as we’re walking out the door. We get in the truck and are driving down the road when I take a big bite, and WHAT THE HOLY HELL IS THIS? There was a thick slab of cheddar cheese right smack in the middle of my sandwich! 🤮 Don’t get me wrong, I love cheddar and I love PB&J, but nowhere in my world do those two things ever cross paths. I said, “What IS this?!?” He said, “You asked for a sandwich and so I made it the way I like it.” Yeah, NO. It was the first time I had ever recalled him eating a sandwich like that and I’m positive to this day that he was just trolling me. Needless to say, I peeled that cheese out of my sandwich and promptly flinged it out the window because he never was one to keep a bag for trash in his vehicle. 😂😂😂

A little bit of butter in the pan, more added when flipping the grilled cheese over.
I've never tried the mayo way, but heard of it.

Many years ago I was listening to our local radio show interview Lenny Kravitz, and for some reason they were talking about grilled cheese. He does his with mayo and also a thin schmear of HONEY on the outside. I tried it and it was delicious!!

I use softened butter spread on the outside of ONE of the slices. I put the other side of the sandwich down into melted butter, then flip to the buttered side to finish cooking.
One of my ds's swears by mayo on the outside of the grilled cheese sandwiches he makes. Says it adds flavour.

Traditionally butter on the outside and cheese in the inside. Growing up it is always just plain white bread with the Kraft individually wrapped cheese slices. And most of the time it is still this way.
We have played around with mayo or cheese on the outside, or different breads.. but to slap together it is plain jane white bread and sliced cheese.
This may gross some out but I always dip mine in ketchup.

I use mayo on both sides of the bread. Then I grill both sides. I use sharp cheddar cheese and fig preserves. It is delicious 🤤

Butter on the outside only. I like Swiss cheese, and tomato slices if in season. I might be adventurous and spread some pesto on the inside.

I do a light coating of mayo on the bread. It definitely works better - and I hate mayo, so that's saying something!

I do the mayo thing. But I put mayo on BOTH sides; once 1 side is grilled on both pieces; flip & add the cheese to the already grilled side and then grill the outsides with the mayo on them. Such a great grilled cheese that way!
