Look on marketplace for older Ikea furniture. The older stuff is made in Sweden and better built & better materials. A lot of the newer stuff is china.

We are thinking about trying Ikea. It is about an hour away on some of the craziest freeways in the area. I dont think they will deliver either. But, if we can borrow a truck, we might go. Slight hijack: You’re more east side in Detroit Metro, right? I had heard years ago that an IKEA was going to go in near 94 and Hall Rd. Did that never happen? I remember specifically because word was that the former sites of The Palace and Summit Place Mall were in consideration but the Mt. Clemens site was chosen instead. I was sad because the former two are much closer to me. To the topic, I have to agree that some IKEA furniture is pretty good. We had a couch from them that didn’t hold up, but our nephew has a couch from them that’s holding up great. They also have wood (not particle board) dressers. I also love their Poang (?) chairs. You can keep getting new cushions for them and the frames hold up really well. As for a bed, I’d recommend getting as good a mattress that he can afford and getting a platform frame. We got one off Amazon for about $100. No, it never happened. I had read that Ikea wont put stores within a certain distance from another (100 miles, Maybe?). That would have been very close to me and we would have loved that! Instead we have to drive to Canton!

I’m guessing IKEA considers the populations of the general areas they consider. I hate driving to Canton, but Mt. Clemens isn’t a great drive for me either. So for me it would’ve been a toss-up.

There are 4 of them in a circle around Los Angeles, about 30 miles apart each (Costa Mesa, Carson, Burbank, Covina). And is it sad that I’ve been to all 4 of them at one time or another?! 😂

When my son and his friends got their first apartment, the only thing they had was a couch from one of the mom’s home since she was replacing hers. I took them on a trip to multiple thrift stores in my area and then to Home Depot for paint. They voted on black for all pieces. We set them up in my garage, cleaned them well, and started the sanding and painting. They were thrilled with how the apartment turned out. They aimed for simple lines in sturdy pieces. They were all different wood types, but once they were painted, they looked great together. Then after they had the basics, they went back to the thrift stores to get a few planters and then hit the pots and pans section. They also used Craigslist for a refrigerator and a few other things.
I think they did a great job in choosing furnishings and they were shocked at the prices, especially since they happened upon a half off sale at one thrift store. They also bought some nice frames with boring art in them. I gave them some gesso to cover up the boring canvases and they each made something abstract. For young guys in their first place, it looked very nice and cohesive. And the added bonus was that they were now invested in how their place looked so it was kept very clean and tidy.

Besides sourcing items secondhand, perhaps places like Wayfair or Overstock?

I advised ds to have his realtor let their realtor know that if there was any furniture they didnt want to take, that he would be interested.
They offered, for a total of $600. -Couch and Loveseat (both have slipcovers, so we will check them out today when we go for the inspection- even if not right for the living room, they can go in the basement) -End tables (i think there are 3) -Coffee Table -Table lamps (2, i think) -2 bookshelves -Dining set (also has a cloth on it, but should be fine for now)
Between that and what we will give him, he just needs to buy a bed and headboard and a patio set and 2 chairs for the front porch

Marketplace, etc. for some nice stuff. I would be very cautious and look it over really well before purchasing though. Bed bugs ...eek. If you get ANY used furniture - look it over hard. Walmart has surprisingly decent stuff. Some in store - more online. Not all of it is great, but some are hidden gems. I have found that the Better Homes & Gardens branded stuff is really not bad at all. I bought a press-back chair because I needed something quick and inexpensive. Dang! It has been a great chair! Under $300, shipped free to my house and VERY easy to put together - just slid the top section into the bottom. I bought a higher quality press-back at a furniture store for about $800 and the Walmart one is hands down more comfortable and feels better quality. I recently saw a small kitchen/dining table setup in the store. It was really nice looking. More modern/minimal in style - but looked like decent quality and very pretty. It is $215 online.
