I'm glad you are feeling a little better on the antibiotics. My guess is a sinus infection or an underlying tooth/gum issue that was previously undiagnosed. Oral surgeon's typically have more refined X-ray devices than regular dentists, so if you have a choice to start there maybe consider it. I've got hashimotos and haven't had any of those acute onset symptoms, which are more typical of infections.

I had something similar and my dentist said the tooth was fine. I went to urgent care and got prednisone and antibiotics. The swelling went down and then started to return and I went back to the dentist. It was a tooth. I don’t remember having any elevated blood work or at least not very high. It’s kind of a blur.
I hope you get relief and answers soon.

Thanks for the responses! I have a follow up doctor's appointment on Thursday and will inquire about the mumps etc. One goo thing is the constant pain is not there anymore...only when I touch the lump on my jaw/chin, and the lump seems to shift from day to day. Lower one day and then higher along my jaw the next.

I’m going with dental issue. You may have to see a dental specialist (a endodontist or a periodontist) get to the bottom of it.
I hope you find an answer soon and get to feeling better.

Here’s my recommendation. Get appointment with pcp, urgent appointment with someone in the office, you need an MRI or CT of your head. Also get appt with dentist, urgent. Keep track of the meds you are taking and how you are feeling. I would prepare yourself that it’s some kind of bacterial infection, in your jaw. If it is an infection I would also prepare yourself for the fact that you may need weeks of IV antibiotics. (I am an infusion nurse and you are not the first I’ve seen presenting like this, this month). You would be the third. I am hoping you can get to PCP or dentist before pain meds run out. If you have to go back to the ER, tell them you want scans before you are discharged.

Just came back from my doctors appointment and thought I'd give an update.
Diagnosis is submandibular lymphadenitis, basically a bacterial infection. So right now the oral antibiotics are slowly working but this doctor was surprised that I wasn't on IV antibiotics right from the get go. But because these are working we are going to continue, however he added a second antibiotic because the current one isn't a very strong one. He did warn me that probotics are recommended and not to be surprised if I end up with a yeast infection 🙃 so that's always fun. But he also said not to worry about the lump, that it would go away in a couple of weeks. So, I'm glad I went in again. Thankfully the pain is basically gone and the swelling is getting better every day. Just irritating that the treatment could have started sooner but not much we can do about it now.

Oh I am glad you got someone to see you! Yay for getting stronger antibiotics -and if, when you are done taking them, you aren't seeing significant improvement, then go back. This isn't something you want to risk not clearing up all the way!

SO GLAD it's a good and relatively easy fix! Yes, take those probiotics and eat yogurt. No yeastie beasties wanted up in there!

Thanks for the update! It sounded bacterial. I wonder what triggered it. Hope you will soon be 100%.

If it were me going through this, I would find the best ENT (otolaryngologist) that I could and let them figure it out. If they could not, then they will recommend a doctor that you should see.

Glad you got a diagnosis and that the treatment is working—if slowly.

Happy to hear you have a diagnosis. If you can, try eating some yogurt. If you do get a yeast infection I think Pharmacists can now prescribe medication directly for the infection.

If they put you on strong antibiotics, PLEASE be careful. I would google what they gave you. There is one antibiotic that causes C-diff. My daughter was put on 2 courses of it (they thought it was an ear infection but it turned out to be TMJ!) and she ended up with C-diff. Turns out it was one of 2 antibiotics that cause that. Get a pharmacist recommended probiotic, not just one that you pick out. It has to actually survive the acid in your stomach to actually be beneficial. Not many do that.
