I do mom and pop places for breakfast because we have a lot of options in our town. It's definitely not cheaper than fast food for breakfast as I think that's one of the meals that FF does cheaper. Nah. Breakfast tacos from the local hole in the wall place, or bagels from the mom and pop place, both cheaper and better than chain fast food IMO. But not available everywhere. For sure but I was thinking of the sitdown places I go where the meals are $14-$16 each. I could do McDonalds for half of that or probably a bagel place. We don't have any hole in the wall breakfast taco places or bagel places near me unfortunately!

You're completely right that this person's argument makes no sense.
No facts will change their mind.
You can just stop responding to the idiocy or say something like "I eat food that I enjoy for a price I think is reasonable for the food and the service I receive."

Except for Chik Fil A, we almost always go to Mom + Pop places. Mainly because our best friends own several restaurants here and we want to support them. But yeah, it's cheaper as well. Same! CFA is convenient to my office, so I get that for lunch sometimes, or I might go to another local place that's also close. On the weekends if I'm going to eat lunch out, I go to my friends' place. The food is better and if I'm going to give my money to someone I'd rather give it to them.

I eat what I want to eat and I'm not too worried about who owns it. Most fast food places are locally owned franchises who employ, obviously, local people.
I prefer the food quality from a family owned place but that's not ALWAYS a guarantee of good food and service.
All food is expensive now.
I started cooking again since I'm now only working two days a week, and it saves a ton of money. I mainly shop at Aldi. It's been a nice change to have homemade food again! I have cooked more in the last two weeks than in the last two years, and that's literally not an exaggeration.

Wow, I'm coming to live with you! A steak meal at a restaurant here would be 3 - 4 times more expensive than fast food. Well, my kids have to get a meal plus...so at Chick fil A, they get a sandwich meal and an order of chicken nuggets... It's still going to be cheaper than the $35 (at the cheapest place) to $45+ that I'd be paying for a steak. Mind you, I just realised that I'm talking Aussie dollars, so it's $24-$30+ in USD. If I go out for brunch I'm paying about $25 for my meal, and that doesn't include a drink or coffee.

We love mom and pop places. We don’t like fast food that much. If no one ate at mom and pops they would go out of business. I love seeing my favorite places with lots of customers. Some are cheaper and some aren’t but we like them and want to patronize them when we choose to eat out.

I love to argue with internet strangers when I have the time, but usually only over political posts. If I had seen their comment to you, I'd probably give them a laughing emoji. I love to read all the posts when internet strangers get into it but I rarely have the energy or desire to engage myself. She was just being so weird I couldn't help myself yesterday. You're completely right that this person's argument makes no sense. No facts will change their mind. You can just stop responding to the idiocy or say something like "I eat food that I enjoy for a price I think is reasonable for the food and the service I receive." My final comment to her was "I'm not sure how paying the prices a business chooses to charge and supporting them with my patronage is a bad thing?" and she stopped responding. As always you peas have had some great and insightful comments. I think my preoccupation with supporting small business comes from the years I spent working at them. There's a preconceived notion a lot of people have that a small business will automatically be more expensive and won't have the best quality and that really isn't the case. Especially not when it comes to dining out these days. I even plan our office parties around what restaurants lie within the boundary of our town and whether or not they might have had a bad year and our business would make a difference. We're going to an old Saloon this year that was once a brothel. Should be fun and the owner was thrilled at having a big party booked for lunch! In the past when we have gone to a chain restaurant the only response I'd get from the staff would be exasperation about having to push tables together and make sure they scheduled enough staff for us that day. Like sorry to inconvenience you, I guess?

I love your response! And I love supporting local small businesses. Our favorite restaurant is a family owned Lebanese restaurant and during COVID we were worried that they might not survive. We got take-out there almost every week and now they greet us by name when we go in! We live in a large city and never were "regulars" at a restaurant before so that's fun for us.

I really don’t understand why someone would prefer to support a corporation rather than a local business. Sounds like one of the lonely keyboard warriors who incites arguments just to have something to do with their time.

I typically go to local places, but I am not adverse to frequenting chains or fast food either. We have a lot of good local places and I love trying out the new as well as returning to old favorites.
Prices…well I will say that chains and fast foods have gone up but you still (typicallly) pay less than at locals. A lot of our local places are farm to table type places, places that use fresh ingredients, etc…I guarantee for the most part you will be paying more for a local place than a fast food chain AND probably getting much better food. But sometimes chains and fast food is the way to go.

I would prefer to visit locally owned places. The downside to that is you don’t know what their food is like. At least at a place like Texas Roadhouse I know what I will be getting. However, I have a few tried and true local places in my area that we like to go to.
